Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Laika is an energetic and affectionate Aussie/Collie mix with a medium coat and the brightest blue eyes! When she first came into foster care, she was nervous and protective, but with patience, gentle reassurance, and lots of treats, she now follows me around everywhere! O nce she feels comfortable, her sweet and playful personality shines through.    Laika loves curling up at your feet for naps and often checks back in for attention when outside, showing just how loving and loyal she can be. She is still learning the ropes of meeting new people and dogs—she can be reactive/vocal at first, so slow introductions are key. Due to her breed, she is a high-energy pup. Laika thrives on playtime, often chasing squeaky toys and playing fetch, or running around with our resident Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. Laika knows basic commands and is potty trained. She is very food motivated and is therefore eager to keep learning.   With continued training, patience, and love, Laika has the potential to be a loyal and cuddly companion who will bring both laughter and energy to her future furever home!   Laikia is from an Owner Surrender. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. *Rescue puppies are notorious for losing their birth certificates before entering our rescue. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.* If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 16, 2025, 12:08 pm

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Cosmo (we call her Ellie), the delightful Aussie mix who defines "wiggle butt" with her perpetually spinning tail and signature butt curl! This affectionate girl is eager to please, thrives on praise, and adores treats. Ellie’s biggest wish is to be by her people – she gets sad when left alone and loves being a part of all the family fun. She does need to be the only dog in the home. She’s a curious observer of her foster cat brothers and does well with supervised interactions! Ellie is a sensitive soul who is making great strides with her anxiety and reactive behaviors in her foster home. She'll flourish in a calm environment with a firm, loving hand to guide her. She starts her day with an early potty break and breakfast in a slow feeder, often followed by snuggle time with her dad. She enjoys mid-morning play and crate time in the living room while her foster mom does chores, content just to be near. She doesn't like being left alone in another room, preferring to be side-by-side with her humans. Evenings are for snuggles, movies, and her beloved Kong toy, which she carries everywhere! Ellie is friendly but cautious with new people, quickly warming up to offer endless love and hilarious tail wags. If you’re ready to open your heart to a sweet, devoted girl who promises a lifetime of snuggles and entertainment, Ellie is waiting for you! al better, please fill out an adoption application. Story
Meet Allie, a 2019 edition of a party colored Australian Shepherd x Border Collie weighing in at 42 lbs. This beautiful gal came to NWMNAR because her previous owner had to leave abroad to help take care of in-laws and could not take Allie with. Allie loves going to obedience class and showing how smart she is. Allie needs an Aussie savy owner whom can outsmart her. She is best with dogs the same size, she has prey drive towards rabbits and may not do well with cats or other smaller animals possibly including smaller tiny dogs. Allie takes time with strangers and will often back away barking. Allie has been scared of men with hats in the past. She can be a bit barky towards other dogs on walks, but has been learning to play nice. She can be dominant towards other dogs. Allie doesn't like plastic crates, but does just fine in wire crate. Allie must be crated in a vehicle otherwise she will run around in a vehicle pushing window switches until she gets out. Allie is best to go for a walk before a car ride to ensure she doesn't nervous defecate in the vehicle. Allie hides and sleeps under the bed to keep the monsters away. Allie does like to vocalize herself if she sees other dogs outside when she is gazing out the windows. She has just started to play with toys and gets groomed twice a week with a brush. Allie is available for adoption. Free adoption applications can be found on our website at: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/NMA/Dog. Because NWMNAR is not a public shelter, meet and greets do not take place until an application has been approved and a home visit has been completed in person or virtually. Meet and greets will take place in a public setting along with the adoption if compatible. Dogs can be met in Ada, MN or in our alternate office location in Maple Grove, Mn.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thelma might be little, but she’s got big ideas. She’s sweet, gentle, and full of love—but don’t be fooled, she’s also the mastermind behind the great puppy pen escape. Her sister Louise is often left behind wondering what just happened while Thelma trots off, proud and pleased with herself. She and Louise were found dumped in a truck yard, and while we don’t know anything about their life before that, Thelma’s already shown us who she is: smart, playful, and determined. She learns quickly—faster than her sister, actually—and it’s fun to watch her little brain at work. She loves food puzzles (though they don’t last long) and wrestling with her furry friends in the yard. When she gets the zoomies, she’ll happily jump on the bed or couch and boop her favorite human with her nose! Thelma loves being outside with her humans and dog siblings, staying alert to unfamiliar noises and people. She does well on walks with her harness, and while she enjoys being near her people, she also likes her space. She’s shy around new people, needing a little time to warm up, but tasty treats—especially frozen blueberries—go a long way in winning her over. Because she can spook easily, Thelma will need a securely fenced yard or someone willing to keep&#226&#128&#139 her leashed while she outside. For her safety, tie-outs aren’t a good option. She’s best suited for a home with older children who can give her the space she needs as she adjusts, and no shared walls, as she may be vocal when excited or mid-play. Here is a video showing me playing hide and seek with my furry friend.   Thelma is the kind of dog who figures things out fast, loves with her whole heart, and will make her new family feel incredibly lucky to have her. Thelma is from Texas.  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application.
