Story
Alfie is being fostered in Cincinnati OH
Meet Alfie! Alfie is a blue merle male, standard Australian Shepherd, who is just over a year old and currently weighs approximately 35lbs. We imagine Alfie will stay on the smaller side even at his full weight, possibly gettin to 45 lbs at max.
Alfie is a typical aussie that LOVES to go for walks, play with sqeaky toys, and play with his foster sibling that is the same age and size. Once a good play session is over, he will curl up next to his foster momma. He definitely has a nice off switch.
hope you are enjoying your vacation. I wanted to follow up on our conversation about Alfie. I feel like I am being picky and emphasizing his herding characteristics to his detriment. I guess I do so because he is such a smart and loving boy, who really likes to cuddle and with continued training (he’s only about 18 months) he’ll be spectacular. I felt after talking to you that you truly understand the herder and I don’t often get that feeling from one conversation.
He continues to surprise us with his enthusiasm and continued learning. He is getting very good at settling when the kids are playing loudly and rambunctiously in the neighbors yards. He comes away and quiets when called. His foster is working on useless but fun entertainment like “sit pretty” and “roll over", "watch me", "leave it" and "by me", along with sit, stay, wait, down and off. He is also learning “find your toy”.
Alfie would do best with some that is experienced with the herding breed, and has some prior dog handling experience. He was was WAY to much dog for his prior owner and because of this, he came to us with some undesired behavioral traits which his foster mom has been working on. She has solicited help of a trainer and he has responded remarkably well. When arriving in rescue, he had no manners or self control. He has learned SO MUCH and with his foster mom's help, he is doing amazing at leash walking, not barking at things that frighten him and getting used to lots of different stimuli. Given this information, Alfie will do best with a home that would continue the training he has been doing, even working with his foster mom on what this looks like. This is a MUST for his forever home.
We recommend a home with children over 12 years of age. Off leash, Alfie enjoys meeting and greeting people and other dogs. On leash, Alfie can become unsure of himself so this is an area he will continue to work on. Alfie enjoys playing with other dogs, so a playful dog and a physically fenced yard would be ideal for Alfie. If you are looking for a devoted companion, who will curl up with you, go on long walks, runs, or maybe agility, this is your boy!!!
Alfie is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, negative for tick borne diseases, microchipped and taking monthly prevention for fleas, ticks and heartworm. Proof of heartworm prevention for any current or previous pets is required to adopt from our organization. For more information on our adoption process, please visit our website at www.MidwestAustralianShepherdRescue.org.
NOTE: All of our dogs live in foster homes with volunteers so we need an approved application on file to set up a meet with a dog you might have an interest in. Please visit our website for more information on our adoption process, our adoption fees and a link to our adoption application. We pride ourselves on matches that work for both the dog and your family. MASR is here for your support, advice and safety net for our dogs for the remainder of their lives. www.MidwestAustralianShepherdRescue.org
