Story
Darby is fostered in the Kansas City, MO area.
Meet Darby! Darby is a gentle, almost three-year-old, black tri female Australian Shepherd with the most perfectly soft fur and soulful brown eyes. Darby is just under 3 years old and weighs around 55 lbs, but she doesn’t know it because she thinks she is a lap dog! She will happily curl up in your lap, or on the couch, for snuggles and kisses.
Darby is a true velcro dog, and wants to be by your side all the time! She is soft-spirited and loyal, eager to follow you wherever you may go. In her previous home, her person worked from home and she enjoyed acting as a personal assistant! Her foster parents love bringing her into the office, where she happily relaxes on her bed with a nice chew to work on. When left alone, Darby feels safest in her crate. Darby would prefer an adopter who is home more often than not!
Darby is crate-trained (and sleeps in her crate all night without a peep!), house-trained, and will ring a bell to let you know when she needs to go potty. She knows: Sit, Down and Shake and is learning more! She loves to train and training sessions are one of her favorite times of day (second only to naps and cuddles)! She is a medium energy gal and can easily tackle a good 1-2 mile walk or hike before coming home to relax. As with any aussie, she will need lots of mental stimulation.
While she’s a social butterfly with her humans, Darby prefers to slowly warm up to strangers, especially during walks. She might voice her opinions with a bark or two, but don’t worry as she's a quick learner and appreciates a gentle redirection. Having tasty treats on hand really boosts her confidence when out walking! Though she takes a few minutes to warm up to new people, her foster mom has been working with her on this and she has been making new friends and learning to trust!
Darby would do best in a quiet home without a lot of traffic, ideally with a physically fenced in yard. Darby gets along famously with her canine foster brother but she does chase cats, so no cats for her. She would prefer a buddy who matches her energy level. Darby can be a little protective of her food, so feeding, working on chews and enrichment items she prefers in her crate. Darby would be best in a home with no children under 12 years of age.
