Story
14-year-old Maddox came to us after his beloved owner could no longer care for him due to declining health. His dad loved him dearly, and Maddox was a devoted companion by his side during the many years they shared.
Maddox is currently on an extended Frosted Fling which has given us a chance to see how he does in a home environment. His foster mom has only wonderful things to report about this perfectly mid-sized 38 lb. boy:
"Maddox has continued to open up over the past month, and underneath his sweet, easygoing exterior is a surprisingly playful, active guy who sometimes seems more like a puppy than a senior!
His current obsession is his stuffed mallard duck. He carries it outside before walks, brings it back in afterward, jumps to catch toys and squeaky balls, and has great mobility. And the vacuum? Apparently that means PLAYTIME. The second it comes out, Maddox is ready to “get” it and will enthusiastically battle it the entire time I’m vacuuming. His energy at 14 is honestly amazing.
Maddox LOVES getting out. He enjoys walks, car rides, exploring new places, sniffing and dilly-dallying, and would be a wonderful companion for someone who wants a dog to go places and do things with them. After dinner, though, he is very content to settle in for couch snuggles.
Maddox is also a serious foodie. Wet food beats dry food, human food beats everything, and treats are life. He knows tolerating his post-walk foot wipe earns him treats and takes his daily medication in a little piece of hot dog bun like a champ.
Maddox has excellent house and potty manners, has never had an accident with us, doesn’t mark, and sleeps through the night—even with my late mornings. He likes to supervise food preparation closely and may briefly try to convince you to share your dinner, but he gives up pretty quickly.
One of my favorite things about Maddox is how sweet he is with my 10-year-old daughter. He loves being wherever she—or the rest of the family—is and especially loves getting treats from her. Somehow he takes them extra gently from her…while I occasionally question whether I’ll be keeping all ten fingers.
Maddox is friendly and affectionate with everyone and seems to gravitate especially toward males. You can pet, hug, and love on him anytime. His hearing may be slightly diminished, but he knows his name, basic commands, and responds beautifully to hand signals.
He generally does well with other dogs but has healthy boundaries. He and our other foster dog Raider coexist comfortably, and Maddox gives a clear but appropriate “that’s enough” when Raider pushes his limits around toys, play, or attention. He can show some dog and car reactivity on leash in our neighborhood, although we’ve walked him around a busy outdoor shopping area without any of that behavior. He also does well with big and small dogs once off leash and seems happiest when he can explore at his own pace.
And although Maddox has several lovely dog beds…
he frequently chooses the hard floor or a laundry pile instead. If I could choose Maddox’s home, I’d look for someone who wants more than a sleepy senior dog. Maddox still wants adventures. He wants walks, car rides, new places, toys, good food, family time—and apparently regular opportunities to fight the vacuum.
Then he’s ready for a comfortable couch and someone to snuggle with when the day is done."
