Hi there! I’m Charizard — formerly known as Chester — and if you’re looking for a dog who’s full of life, love, and gratitude, I think we should talk.
My story starts on the streets of Mexico, where I learned early how tough life could be. I was always hungry, covered in wounds, and even though I was submissive, I still got attacked by other dogs. I was rescued once during a TNR campaign, treated for my injuries, and then released — but the streets weren’t any safer the second time around. I was later “adopted” by a family who kept me chained, alone, and neglected. I wasn’t fed, had no shelter, and ended up with mange, fleas, and ticks. Eventually, I escaped and found my way back to the rescue that had helped me before — and this time, they didn’t let me go.
Even after everything I’ve been through, I’ve never let the hard times change my heart. I’m known as one of those "WOW" dogs because I’m still sweet, affectionate, and just plain happy. No aggression, no sadness — just wiggles, tail wags, and an eagerness to soak up every bit of kindness that comes my way.
To help me get to FOHA, an incredible community raised funds in just 24 hours to send me and nine other pups on the adventure of a lifetime. We spent a night with another rescue in Mexico City, then flew all the way to Virginia with the help of a flight angel. Once we landed, FOHA staff and volunteers met us with open arms — and I knew, for the first time, that I was safe for good.
Now I’m living life to the fullest! I love to zoom around the yard, play tug-of-war (with lots of silly growls), and explore the office or backyard before checking in for cuddles. I’m playful, curious, and incredibly affectionate. I walk calmly on leash, share my toys and chews without fuss, and happily sit on my bed when people come to say hi. I especially love fishy treats and squeaky toys — but honestly, I’m just happy to be included.
