Meet Buster! a  sweet, happy, awesome boy! Buster is the ultimate companion and sidekick, a naturally social, joyful pup who loves being with his people and is always ready to go on new adventures. Buster was rescued from a rural county shelter, where his standout social skills with other dogs caught the attention of one of our amazing foster moms, who knew he deserved a chance to find a great home. He has been flourishing in his local foster home for the past few months with his foster parents, Travis and Laura, and their two young, playful dogs. He fit right into the pack from day one. The best way to describe Buster is happy-go-lucky, affectionate, and very connected to his people. He loves being part of the action and will happily follow his foster parents around the house, keeping close tabs on whatever they're doing. He's an easygoing guy who wants to please, listens well, and doesn't look for conflict. He is also a smart, well-mannered pup who has already mastered the basics of being a great house dog. Buster is housetrained, crate trained, and walks well on leash without pulling. He knows basic commands like sit and shake, and he's happy to show them off, especially when there's a treat involved. He may jump up with excitement when he first meets someone, but he's easily redirected and is learning to keep all four paws on the floor. Buster is a natural with other dogs and would love to have a canine playmate in his forever home. He enjoys having a buddy to romp around with, shares toys and treats nicely, and is a huge fan of tug-of-war. His foster dad, Travis, says Buster is very adaptable and did wonderfully adjusting to life with their bigger dog, Penny. He was a little nervous on his first day, but by day two, the two were cuddling together. Clearly, Buster knows how to make friends. He's also an excellent car rider and has already been on several road trips with his foster family to their home away from home in Paw Paw, WV. He loved exploring the trails and having plenty of room to romp with his pup pack. Even when he's off having fun, though, Buster keeps a close eye on his people and likes to stay nearby. His recall is excellent, which makes adventures with him even more fun. Buster is an active young dog who would thrive with a family that enjoys getting out and doing things. Whether it's a walk around the neighborhood, a road trip, exploring a trail, playing fetch or tug-of-war in the backyard, or simply hanging out with his people, Buster is happiest when he's included. Story
Meet Magnolia, aka Maggie. This sweet bully girl was rescued just before Thanksgiving in PG County, MD. Her rescuer, and now foster mom, Mara saw a post on her Ring app about a dog tied to a light post in a local park. Animal Control had been contacted, but no one had responded, and with the cold weather, Mara worried for the dog’s safety. She went to look for her, walking through the park multiple times until she noticed a small shape on the ground that she initially thought was a bag, but it was Maggie, curled up in a tight ball, trying to stay warm. She was thin, dehydrated, and exhausted, but friendly, allowing Mara to leash her and bring her home. Maggie has been living with Mara, her partner, their dog, and a cat for the past seven weeks. During her first week, she slept a lot and was fed small, frequent meals to help her regain strength. It was clear she had recently had puppies and was also dealing with skin infections that needed treatment. After multiple vet visits, her skin issues have nearly fully resolved, her beautiful chocolate-brown coat is filling in, and she’s gaining weight and muscle.  Today, Maggie is a completely different dog. She’s come out of her shell and now shows the healthy energy of the young dog she is. She’s learned good house manners, is both house- and crate-trained, and has adapted well to being part of a pack. Maggie does well with the resident dog but is not a good fit with cats. We also brought in a trainer to work on her leash skills, and she’s made steady, positive progress.  At first, everything was exciting and new for Maggie, but with continued exposure, she has learned to navigate new social situations. She does well meeting visitors and joins her foster parents on outings, including trips to Home Depot. She recently attended a family holiday gathering where she did great with everyone.  We checked in with her foster mom, Mara, for an update: "Magnolia is such a sweetheart and so loving. She is a naturally friendly, social pup who is always seeking love and affection. Sometimes she even thinks she’s a lap dog. She’s an active girl who’s always ready to go and do, but she’s also learned how to settle indoors and is just as happy lounging on the couch for a movie night. Adjusting from her previous living situation (unknown) to life inside a home took a little time, but she’s absolutely loving it now. Magnolia loves the comforts of home and is a total cuddle bug who wants to be right by your side. We’re currently working on basic commands like “sit” and helping her build impulse control, balanced with playtime with her stuffies and cozy crate naps. She’s shown no signs of reactivity toward people or other dogs, and no resource guarding. She does, however, have a prey drive and is very interested in squirrels and other critters.” ******** We think Maggie would thrive in an active home and would love a canine companion of similar size and energy to play with. She’ll do best with an owner who has large-dog experience and is committed to providing structure and continuing her training so she can keep progressing. Maggie is an incredibly sweet girl who will make a loyal, loving companion. Apply today! Legacy is ready to join your family for any and all fun, adventures, games, snuggles, exploring, wrestling, chasing, fetching that stick or ball, you name it-----he is a ready-to-roll little guy! So happy, curious, playful, loves other dogs and all people, and ready for you to teach and show him your routines and how to best behave to make you as happy as he is! At 5 months he just hit 25 lb, right on track to fitting that 'medium' category of adult size. Sleeps quietly thru' the night in his crate and equally calm and quiet in the crate while you're out-----well, if you leave him some good sturdy puppy chew toys and bones! Still a baby but, ah, good boy, closing in toward 100% in the housebreaking category, will nail it quickly if he has a known routine and the humans remember to take or let him out at set times after getting up from a nap, eating, etc. Loves playing with other dogs----the faster and more contact and energetic the better but he adjusts to what another dog likes or tolerates. FYI- he THINKS he's an Alpha dog, haha, just born that confident! But easy to nip any guarding tendency in the bud, for example since it's not tolerated at this foster home he now eats and plays and shares toys alongside other dogs----but important heads up for a potential adopter, to be ready to correct and redirect if he forgets and tries guarding again in a new situation. Everyone who meets him LOVES him.  So come fall in love with this great pup!!Adoption Day: September 5th at PetSmart Tysons Corner from 10:0011:00 AM, an approved adopter must be present to adopt. Some pups may stick around until 11:00 AM for the public event-check our Facebook page closer to the date to see if this pup will be attending the extra fun!  ##2768074##

We’ve only been fostering this guy for a couple of days and we can already tell how wonderful he is.   He’s smart - starting to understand the command sit on the very first day and eager to please.  He’s chill - oh you’re going to give me a bath now, cool.  He’s playful - is it a ball, a stick, a rope - don’t care - would you like to throw it and let me chase you?  He’s friendly - whether 5 or 55 he’s smitten with all his new friends.  He’s affectionate - ahhhh, downtime - please hold me and rub my belly.   He and his 2 sisters that we are fostering are so sweet and fun - they have a huge fan club in our neighborhood already. Adoption Day: September 19th at PetSmart Tysons Corner from 10:00–10:30 AM, an approved adopter must be present to adopt.   Some pups may stick around until 11:00 AM for the public event—check our Facebook page closer to the date to see if this pup will be attending the extra fun! ##2831056##

We've affectionately renamed this baby s'mores for her unique coloring.  Such a good puppy - she's ready for playtime, cuddle time, explore time.   She's loved having so many neighborhood friends of all ages come over and give her love.   She and her siblings are doing remarkable on their housebreaking - alerting us when they need to go out.  She would be lucky to have a family that wants to play and snuggle and they would be lucky to have her . Adoption Day: September 19th at PetSmart Tysons Corner from 10:0010:30 AM, an approved adopter must be present to adopt. Some pups may stick around until 11:00 AM for the public event-check our Facebook page closer to the date to see if this pup will be attending the extra fun! ##2831054##

Story
ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Meet Marshall – A Sweet Senior Still Waiting for His Second Chance 🤎 Marshall—known lovingly by staff as “Marshy” or “Marshmallow”—has been waiting longer than most, and it’s hard not to feel how deeply he deserves to finally be home again. After spending 8 years in a loving, structured home, Marshall found himself back in the shelter system, and the sudden change was overwhelming for him. Kennel life has been especially hard, and his anxiety grew to the point where he now spends his days in the quieter break room at the farm, where he feels more comfortable and settled. And yet, even after everything, Marshall remains the same gentle, loving soul he’s always been. At his core, Marshall is a sweet, affectionate boy who just wants to be near his people. Once he feels safe, his personality begins to shine in the most endearing ways. He’s goofy, expressive, and full of quiet charm—the kind of dog who makes you smile without even trying. Marshall loves car rides, happily curling up in the back seat before eventually popping his head up to feel the wind on his face through an open window. He enjoys his naps, leans in for every bit of affection he can get, and has a funny, endearing habit of “talking” to his people when he’s feeling happy or engaged. He’ll roll around with his toys, soak up scratches (especially his favorite booty rubs), and even entertain himself by rolling toys down little hills just to chase them again. There’s a playful, silly side to Marshall that still comes out when he feels safe—and it’s one of the most beautiful things about him. What Marshall needs now is simple, but deeply important: a calm, loving home where he can feel secure again. A place where he can finally exhale, rebuild trust, and enjoy the comfort of belonging. He has already given so much of his heart in his lifetime. He’s just waiting for someone willing to give theirs back. Marshall is a senior, and no senior dog should have to spend their golden years in a shelter. To help him find the family he so deeply deserves, his adoption fee has been waived and he is part of our REWARDS program. Somewhere out there is a soft place for Marshall to land. We just need someone to see him. Marshall is spending some time in a foster home. This is what his foster says about him: It takes Marshall very little time to warm up to new humans. He is eager to trust and show his affectionate, goofy side. He is a quiet and easy guest. While other dogs can make him nervous, he is easy to guide past dogs we encounter on walks. If a dog barks at him, he will bark back but also easily walks by. ESTIMATED WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 65 pounds. KNOWN WITH DOGS: Marshall is picky about his dog friends and would do best as the only dog in the home. KNOWN WITH CATS: Marshall is not a fan of cats so we think a home without them would be best. KNOWN WITH KIDS: Kids can make Marshall nervous and he would like to find a home where he can be the only child. KNOWN CUES: Sit, Down, Wait, Come, Crawl, Touch, Spin, Wait, Leave it KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING &/OR CRATING: Marshall is housebroken and does well when left alone. KNOWN LIKES: Love and attention, Toys, Food, Walks, Car rides, People, The Park KNOWN DISLIKES: Thunderstorms ___________________________________ If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out our dog adoption questionnaire and e-mail any questions to: trailshomefarm@homewardtrails.org PLEASE VISIT THIS WEBSITE TO FIND THE ADOPTION QUESTIONNAIRE: http://www.homewardtrails.org/adopt-a-pet/adoption-forms/ LOCATION:Trails Home Farm ADOPTION COORDINATOR: Trails Home Farm HOW TO MEET THIS ANIMAL: All dogs located at Trails Home Farm are in Delaplane, VA and require an appointment for approved applicants to have a meet and greet. ADOPTION FEE: Adoption Fee: WAIVED! We thank DoodyCalls of Northern Virginia for their generous sponsorship of Marshall which means he is FREE! His adoption fee has been sponsored by DoodyCalls of Northern Virginia! You can learn more about them at https://www.doodycalls.com/northern-va/. I'M ALSO PART OF THE REWARDS PROGRAM. WE WILL ALSO PAY MY FOSTER OR ADOPTER $500. HT has a number of dogs that need very special homes. These dogs have been failed by humans along the way, leaving them homeless and with issues from their treatment. We'll be honest. Some of them are real jerks. But not always. And not to everyone. Not everyone can be charming ALL the time, right? Others are just fearful and don't like other animals because they have had a bad interaction at some point. Some of them love other dogs but are just plain scared of everything. But all of them are good on the inside. And we believe that ALL of them deserve a chance at life and love. And we're looking to find the right human out there to make that happen. But competition is tough. And they're up against small, well-behaved doggies...so we are offering incentives for special humans willing to give these pooches a chance. WE WANT YOU! ***We are paying $500 to any approved foster or adopter of our REWARDS dogs.*** The human will also get ongoing training support, all supplies covered and a $25 Amazon gift card each month for 6 months. You will learn and grow. You will be doing a world of good for a dog who has really had it rough in life. ------------- HT ADOPTION INCLUSIONS: -Spay/Neuter -First 3 distemper series vaccines and dewormings -Rabies vaccine* age appropriate at time of adoption -Microchip - lifetime with no registration fees -Current on heartworm preventative -Current on flea/tick preventative ---- EXCLUSIVE HTAR ADOPTER BENEFITS: -$15 off your first chewy order of $49.00 or more -Exclusive pet insurance offers - $250 coverage at any VCA Hospital in the country -COMPLIMENTARY FIRST EXAMS at 10 DC-Area veterinarians - Free year-round dog training - KEEP YOUR PET SAFE: Homeward Trails is proud to offer PetLink GPS trackers that will allow you to know where your pet is in real time.**Exclusive for HT Adopters (does not include subscription plan): $50 Check it out here: https://landing.petlink.net/gps-dog-tracker -A portion of EVERY ADOPTION FEE supports spay/neuter efforts in under resourced communities -Free doggy day care offers -EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNTS for Homeward Trails events and merchandise -Win a $50 Amazon gift card

Story
Meet Boomer! This handsome bully boy showed up on a family’s doorstep one winter evening, alone, with no collar, an injured ear, and in need of help. A kind family took him in, brought him to the vet, and tried to find his owner, but no one ever came forward. They decided to foster him, and Boomer spent months in their care, living with their terrier pup and two young adult kids, showing them what a sweet, loyal, and incredibly fun companion he can be. Boomer came to the DC metro area at the beginning of summer and has been fostered locally, living as an only dog. His foster parents live an active life, and he’s proven to be an adventure buddy extraordinaire. He loves getting out to explore - hiking, riding in the car, going to wineries, hanging at cookouts, or pretty much anywhere his people are headed. He's a dream in the car: quiet, relaxed, and happy to go along for the ride. He's also wonderful with all people and does great at social gatherings. Boomer is friendly, affectionate, and surprisingly chill for a young pup. He enjoys meeting people and soaking up attention without needing to be the center of the party. At home, he's equally happy curling up on a blanket or pillow, getting head and belly rubs, or relaxing near his people after a good walk. And while he may look like a bit of a tank, his foster family has discovered what a gentle and loving boy he really is. Boomer has great house manners, is fully housetrained, and is comfortable in his crate, where he often chooses to rest on his own. He has earned free-roam privileges in his foster home and sleeps quietly through the night. He's also a very quiet dog, though you may occasionally hear his signature snore when he's completely relaxed. Boomer enjoys his daily walks and benefits from regular exercise. A trainer has worked with him on leash skills, and he's made good progress, although he can still pull at times and get excited meeting new dogs on leash.  Because he's a strong boy, he'll do best with a confident handler who will continue providing structure and training. He responds very well to redirection. When it comes to other dogs, Boomer can be selective. He has successfully lived with another dog, and the two became good friends after a gradual introduction. He seems to do particularly well with smaller dogs, but a proper introduction is important to make sure everyone is a good match. He hasn't shown much interest in toys yet, so play is still a work in progress. Boomer has come a long way from the night he showed up looking for help. He's healthy, neutered, microchipped, and ready for his forever home. Whether you're looking for a hiking buddy, road-trip companion, winery and cookout plus-one, or simply a sweet dog to hang out with at home, Boomer may be your guy.  Apply today!
