Story
ACCT has a large dog rescue incentive going for dogs over 40lbs tagged by January 10th, and Starr Shine is eligible! She will have a grant of $750 go to the rescue partner that takes her.
** $25 in pledges for the rescue that pulls! **
** New playgroup videos! 1/3 **
Starr Shine ACCT-A-238896 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Starr Shine must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, JANUARY 8TH at 10AM. Should Starr Shine's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Meet Starr Shine! This beautiful ten-year-old girl hasn't had the easiest life, but she's hoping there's a special person out there to give her a chance at happiness. Starr Shine was surrendered to ACCT Philly on December 8th from an unstable living situation. Not much is known about her past, but it appears that life has not always been kind to Starr Shine. When she first arrived she was very shut down, shy and fearful, but she’s gotten more comfortable, and we’re starting to see a sparkle return to her eye! Starr Shine has also participated in playgroup and has done well with other dogs, showing polite social skills and the ability to coexist calmly.
She would be great for someone wanting a dog who is past the age of being super active, but still loves to go for walks as well as get snuggles. She keeps her kennel very neat, and loves to sleep on a fluffy comforter. Because she was fearful when she arrived, she would do best in a home without small kids, but she will make someone who gives her a chance very lucky because she’s a great dog. Due to her length of stay, Starr Shine is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.

Per volunteer 12/30: Low-medium energy. Good dog meet with Miss Minni! Attempted dog meet with reactive dog. She did well, he tried to bite through muzzles. She tried correcting but never overcorrected. She did very well.
Per volunteer 12/30: Low energy. Easy in/out. Shy but jumped up and sat next to me in the yard.
Per volunteer 12/30: Low energy. Interested [in other dogs]. Shy but an easy walk.
Per volunteer 12/28: Good dog meet with Django.
Per staff 12/28: I went to see Starr Shine while she was in the crate. I got her a comforter and I opened the kennel and she was nervous and fearful, looking for exit. I put the blanket down and just sat quietly and she came up to me and licked my face while I pet her. I then put the blanket inside. Prior to that I saw her in the crate throughout the day after she'd been moved out of ISO and she was curled up in the back of the crate.
Per staff 12/27: Starr Shine has become much more comfortable! She participated in playgroup and did quite well.
Per staff 12/25: Laying on her bed when I approached her kennel. She had soft eyes, ears forward and nub down. She was dodgey of the leash and trying to go past me. Once leashed she pulled mildly towards the door and outside. We went into the pen, she explored the yard and then came over to me. Sat down and took treats nicely. She returned to her kennel without issue.
Per volunteer 12/24: Low energy. Flinchy with fast movements. Liked the pepperoni.
Per volunteer 12/22: Star shine has come out of her shell so much. She was ready at the front of the kennel to go out with me and I feel she is more trusting now. She allows pets and seems to enjoy our walk. She is an easy girl to take out.
Per volunteer 12/21: Low energy. Shy girl, seems very on guard + nervous while walking.
Per volunteer 12/19: Low energy. Had to go slow, she seems so scared - exit searching while in hall. Outside seem scared in dark.
Per staff 12/10: Low energy, scared a little, no problem walking or petting.
Per staff 12/11:
Kennel Presentation: Asleep on the Kuranda bed when I approached. I made some kissy noises and had to tap on the door. She finally looked up, and then retreated to the other side of the kennel. Wide eyes, ears to the side and body crouched lowered.
Leash Skills: Avoidant of the leash try to dodge past me. Once leash she was hyper vigilant, nub tucked, mildly pulling. Exit searching outside.
Sociability: asocial. Brought into the eval room and her eyes were wide, with ears back. I sat down on the chair and she came over and sat next to me. I was able to pet down her side, she stayed sitting down. I offered her a treat and she ate it then she started to drool.
Dog Interaction: Met king Claus. Wide eyes, ears to the side and King came up and sniffed her face. She stayed still had no reaction and then walked away. Added "good dog meet in shelter" however, she had no reaction to the dog coming to sniff her. Walked away and did not want to interact with the dog.
Return to Kennel: Clipped and she went into her kennel without hesitation.
Color Level: Exp Blue.
Per staff 12/10: Low energy, scared a little, no problem walking or petting.
Per staff 12/8: Placed on evaluate because Starr was very fearful in intake lobby. Would approach people low to the ground, eyes wide and soft, but then shy away. Will probably need TTA and further evaluation. Other than being very shy and fearful, did not display any overtly concerning behavior except that she cowered and lifted her lip when her owner raised her arm to hit Starr.
Starr Shine’s owner surrender notes indicated she lived with children, is mostly housebroken, partially crate trained, high energy, and great on leash. She is “nice and cool” with strangers and children, “runs off” cats and “sometimes aggresses” dogs. The owner noted she had bitten another dog before. When staff were speaking with the owner they noted, “After speaking w/ owner it seems that Starr bit her chihuahua Luna on the eye years ago, chihuahua was okay and was rehomed to neighbors to avoid future incidents.” Full intake notes are available on request as the owner’s condition may have affected their ability to provide accurate information.
MEDICAL:
On 12/16, Starr Shine was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. She tested positive for pneumovirus but retested negative on 12/23. She completed her medication on 12/29.
On 12/10, Starr Shine was spayed.
12/9 Vet Exam:
BCS: 4/9
Behavior: QAR, fearful but showed no aggression. Went very slow, Starr tolerated exam well and took treats.
Oral: pink and moist,
