Meet Starr Shine ACCT-A-238896! This beautiful ten-year-old girl hasn't had the easiest life, but she's hoping there's a special person out there to give her a chance at happiness. Starr Shine was surrendered to ACCT Philly on December 8th from an unstable living situation. Not much is known about her past, but it appears that life has not always been kind to Starr Shine. Here in the shelter, Starr has been quite shy and fearful, but has done exceedingly well during her veterinary exams and vaccinations! Starr has a bit of dental tartar and arrived at the shelter with live fleas and waxy ears, but otherwise appears to be in good health for a pup her age. She's started to come out of her shell more, and participated in playgroup and did quite well. She was ready at the front of the kennel to go out with me and I feel she is more trusting now. She allows pets and seems to enjoy our walk . She is an easy girl to take out . Per staff 12/13: “Starr Shine was on her bed with neutral eyes. i tossed some food in which she ignored. i opened the kennel door and she retreated to the backside. i closed the divider and met her on the backside as she had wide eyes. i showed her the leash and was able to throw a lasso. once secured she came right out. she walked with a lowered body and head, hyper vigilantly looking around. in the room she walked slowly, looking up at me from time other time. i spent maybe 5 minutes with her before attempting some handling. i touched her with the back of my leash first, which she did not react to. i stopped the top of her head and down her back. she was very tolerant. i walked her around some more and she kept checking in. she leaned her body next to me and looked up at me. i touched the e top of her nose and gave her some head pets again.” Per staff 12/11: “Added "good dog meet in shelter" however, she had no reaction to the dog coming to sniff her. Walked away and did not want to interact with the dog.” Per staff 12/11: “Kennel Presentation: Asleep on the Kuranda bed when I approached. I made some kissy noises and had to tap on the door. She finally looked up, and then retreated to the other side of the kennel. Wide eyes, ears to the side and body crouched lowered. Leash Skills: Avoidant of the leash try to dodge past me. Once leash she was hyper vigilant, nub tucked, mildly pulling. Exit searching outside. Sociability: asocial. Brought into the eval room and her eyes were wide, with ears back. I sat down on the chair and she came over and sat next to me. I was able to pet down her side, she stayed sitting down. I offered her a treat and she ate it then she started to drool. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: met king Claus. Wide eyes, ears to the side and King came up and sniffed her face. She stayed still had no reaction and then walked away. Return to Kennel: Clipped and she went into her kennel without hesitation. Color Level: Exp Blue” Per staff 12/8: “Placed on evaluate because Starr was very fearful in intake lobby. Would approach people low to the ground, eyes wide and soft, but then shy away. Will probably need TTA and further evaluation. Other than being very shy and fearful, did not display any overtly concerning behavior except that she cowered and lifted her lip when her owner raised her arm to hit Starr.” Per owner: Starr Shine lived with children, is mostly housebroken, partially create trained, high energy and great on leash. She is nice and cool with strangers and children, runs off cats and sometimes aggresses dogs.” When staff was speaking with the owner they noted, “Starr bit the owners chihuahua Luna on the eye years ago.” Full intake notes are available on request as Owner’s condition may have affected their ability to provide accurate information. Meet sweet Michaela (ACCT-A-237403)! This senior lady was surrendered to the shelter along with her sister, Bella (ACCT-A-237402), when their owner's health declined and he could no longer care for them. The owner recommended that Michaela and Bella stay together. Michaela is about 70lb and 9 years old. In the shelter, Michaela has been goofy and snuggly! She loves pets and attention and follows her sister around for comfort. She's had a good dog meet and, per her owner surrender notes, is "Great with children, good with strangers, okay with cats and dogs". She loves rope toys and treats and is already crate trained, housebroken, and knows some commands! Sociability: Social with handler, soliciting attention and allowing handling all over. In the volunteer office, she and her sister went from person to person asking for treats and pets. Michaela was not as jumpy as Bella, asking for treats more gently. She remained loose and wiggly, loving pets all over and leaning in. Play: N/A Dog Interaction: Very comfortable with her sister. Loose body and followed each other around. When Bella reacted to another dog from afar, Michaela seemed to follow her lead a bit (barking toward the dog), but her reaction was smaller (no hackles or pulling) and she calmed down more quickly. Return to Kennel: Stopped briefly outside of her kennel, walked right in with a treat scatter. Though she's still adjusting to the shelter environment, she has shown us glimpses of her lovely personality—walking beautifully on leash, taking treats gently, and even climbing up on a bench to quietly ask for pets. She prefers a slow approach, but once she feels safe, she’s calm, affectionate, and quietly brave. Isadora is currently healing from a tough stretch of health challenges, including pneumonia and a positive test for canine pneumovirus. She recently gave birth to stillborn puppies and is still recovering both physically and emotionally. She’s receiving medical care, but her appetite is low and her energy is subdued. We know this isn’t the real Isadora—it’s just the tired, sick version of her waiting for a soft place to land. She was originally found as a stray and described by her finder as docile and quiet with people but reactive to other animals, especially cats. While she has been tolerant in playgroup settings, she tends to be nervous and shut down around other dogs, preferring her own space. What Isadora needs now is time, patience, and a peaceful place to rest and heal—ideally in a calm home where she can decompress and begin to show the full extent of her loving nature. I took it slow and tossed her treats from the other side of the kennel opposite the bed she was laying on. I eventually went around and tossed her some treats upon opening the door she was facing. She did not retreat and allowed me to place my leash over her head. Once leashed, she easily got up and walked out of kennel. She walked SO well on leash, stayed right next to me even when passing a reactive dog. She seemed nervous so I didn't push interaction, but she did solicit some attention when entering the run where the photoshoot staff was located. She did well for her photo and was easily returned to kennel. Playgroup 4/26: Isadora was aloof at the gate for greetings. She was steerable on all accounts and very nervous. she was shut down in the yard and avoidant of all the dogs. we kept her in the yard to see if she'd warm up but she kept to herself for the most part. Per volunteers 4/26/25: I had Isadora out and she was super sweet but a little nervous. She allowed me to pet her but when she wanted some space she would walk away which is okay! She took treats very nicely out of my hands and walked excellent on leash. She did solicit some pets and climb up on the bench with me for some pets. She’s overall a really sweet girl! I had no issues returning her to kennel as she walked right in. Baked Beans, or as we call her, Beans, is a super sweet girl. She is a little wary of new people at first and takes a some time to warm up to them. She prefers if you let her approach you when she is comfortable. She knows basic commands, is housebroken, loves car rides and sleeps through the night and if you let her, she is happy to have a lazy morning. Beans is calm inside the house but once she gets outside, she is ready to play. She plays hard so she'd do best in a home without small children. She just doesn't know her size and strength. She loves to chase the ball and play tug. I think she would do well with another dog of her size that can handle rough play. She is not a fan of baths. We have been working on getting her used to just going into the bathing area. We don't use a crate with her, she stays in our mudroom when we leave the house. But we have one set up for her and she started to go in and chill out for a little bit. She loves to go on walks. Walking on the leash can be tough at times. She loves to try to chase the squirrels, rabbits, birds and even their shadows if they fly overhead. She loves to stop and smell the flowers or whatever she finds interesting. We have been working with a trainer. She needs some work still but she is smart and will improve with time and patience.

Meet beautiful Bella! Bella was surrendered to the shelter with her sister Michaela when their owner experienced health issues and could no longer care for them. These sweet girls have become shelter favorites with their goofy antics and gentle personalities. They are both sweet, tolerant, and great with handlers!
