Story
Goem ACCT-A-219087 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Goem must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, OR ADOPTER by WEDNESDAY, MAY 21ST at 10AM. Should Goem's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Meet Goem, a sweet older boy who was surrendered to the shelter on April 30th after his owner passed away. Goem is estimated to be around 7 years old and is understandably down in the shelter, but really peps up when in the presence of people and dog pals! This big, soulful boy is hoping for a second chance to feel safe and loved. Goem has proven to be a calm and easygoing companion. He’s participated in multiple playgroups and mixes gentle and rowdy playstyles, using clear communication when he’s ready for space. Volunteers consistently describe him as sweet, mellow, and friendly—and even when feeling under the weather, he continues to seek affection and offer tail wags. Due to his length of stay, Goem is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:
Per volunteer 5/14: Easy, nice dog.
Per staff 5/13: Good guy.
Per staff 5/12: Good on walk and on leash.
Per volunteer 5/11: He greeted me with a calm, loose body and allowed leashing very easily. He’s amazing on leash without any pulling even though he’s a very big boy. Outside in the yard he is clearly very sick so was just standing by my side taking pets and very low energy. He didn’t take any treats from me, but did sniff them out. Poor guy looking for comfort
Per volunteer 5/8: Nice dog. Sweet and friendly.
Per volunteer 5/7: I approached the kennel and he remained laying down, I called his name and showed him the leash and he came to the front and was easy to loop. He pulled moderately to the outside and once outside he walked on a loose leash. He was tolerant of all body handling, maintaining a middle tail, wagging, ears to the side, gentle pant, and soft eyes. After he went potty, he solicited attention from me, approaching me with ears, back soft eyes and middle wagging tail, and took treats gently.
We passed by a small dog in the parking lot and he was unfazed, looking at the dog, then quickly looking away and continuing to walk. He was easy to return to kennel and remove the leash.
Per staff 5/6: Sweet, good on walk and on leash. Very chill.
Per volunteer 5/4: So sweet + friendly.
Per volunteer 5/3: Fence meets with other dogs, friendly/loose. Big and strong but still pretty mellow/easy.
Per staff 5/3, playgroup: Steerable. Mix of Gentle & Dainty and Rough & Rowdy playstyle. Initiates play with other dogs with playbows. Half-heartedly attempted to mount dogs but would quickly switch to play. Overall calm and easy going. Offered appropriate vocal correction to dogs when he was tired and no longer wanted to play/interact with dogs.
MEDICAL:
On 5/5, Goem was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. He tested negative for pneumovirus. On 5/12, enrofloxacin was added, and the course of doxycycline was extended. By 5/14, his URI symptoms had worsened. He had a respiratory rate of 36 breaths per minute with increased effort, a pulse oximetry reading of 90–91% on room air, and appeared quiet and depressed. As a result, doxycycline was discontinued, and clindamycin was prescribed in addition to enrofloxacin.
On 5/1, Goem received a senior wellness exam. Mild dental calculus and staining were noted. A small patchy area of hair loss was observed on his back, with thickened, crusty, red skin. His hind limbs exhibited tremors when he was nervous, although his gait remained normal. Mild muscle wasting of his hind end and crepitus in both stifles were noted. He was tentatively diagnosed with flea allergy dermatitis and hindlimb osteoarthritis. Osurnia was applied to the affected skin.
During his intake exam on 4/30, Goem was noted to be a friendly, big man, but was scared with his back legs shaking. He weighed 98.9 pounds and appeared in good health overall with mild staining on his teeth.
