Come meet Turks and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Oct. 6th) from 12-3 pm at the Petsmart in Alexandria (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Turks Best Guess for Breed: Collie/shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of July 2024 Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 40lbs as of July 2024 Gets Along With: Other dogs! She is also living with cats and is doing well with them. We haven’t seen Turks with kids, but she can be tested! Currently Living At: South Carolina shelter; needs a forever home in the DC area! Special Adoption Considerations: Turks is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Turks is Looking For: Her forever home! This sweet girl needs a new home through no fault of her own. She's eager to once again have her own humans. Long sniffy walks and world exploration with them is on her wish list, as are a cushy dog bed and quality kibble. But you know what's right at the top of the list? Being safe and loved and under her own roof for all his days. What My Foster Says About Me: Turks is an absolute sweetheart. Her favorite activities are being petted, rubbed, brushed and cuddled. She enjoys walks and is all about the mission of the walk, not the smells of the walk. She does well on the leash and in a variety of environments including trails, quiet streets and busy streets although she shows signs of nervousness with large trucks (but not panic-she leans into her foster mom or foster dog for extra comfort while trucks pass by). She demonstrates minimal interest in wildlife (squirrels, fox, deer, crows, etc) and other dogs except to note where they are. At home, Turks lives with an older large dog and matches his calmness. She will run around a little in the backyard and will show interest in toys however she is still figuring out how to do those dog things and enjoy life. She lives with two cats and has been found sleeping on the sofa with one of them several times. Turks sleeps through the night in her crate and spends time in it during the day with no whining. She waits at the backdoor to go outside and potty and has had no accidents since being in the home. Once Turks get to know people, she has so much love to share but she requires patience to allow her to feel comfortable although a good brushing is a good way into her heart. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
