Supporters and Recurring Giving Donors will be put on our VIP Application List &#226&#128&#139 Adoption Costs and other important information. If you are interested in adopting from Sterling Animal Shelter, please submit an application through our "Pets for Adoption" page.  We are currently open by appointment only Tuesday through Friday, and have Open Hours on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.  Our appointments are scheduled by matching our applications to our available pets. If your application is chosen, our staff will contact you to set an appointment for a meet and greet to spend some time with the animal one-on-one. We do still have same day adoptions, and if your meet is successful, you can take your pet home at the time of your appointment.  To find the best match for each pet, we prefer to have the entire family present when doing an adoption. If you have a dog at home already, please be prepared to bring your resident dog to meet a potential new dog, to ensure all parties get along. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet. Story
Winter is a stunning senior lady! This 12-year-old is independent and likes to keep to herself most of the time but that's not to say that she's not curious about what's going on around her. She just prefers to watch from a distance. She loves mealtime and treats, and chasing her ribbon wand toy.  Unfortunately, Winter tested positive for both Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). There is no cure for FeLV and we don't know how much longer we have with this sweet lady! If you'd like to learn more about FeLV and FIV in cats, please refer to the links below: https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-leukemia-virus https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv Winter also had some mammary tumors that turned out to be grade II carcinomas. While the tumors were completely excised, there was vascular invasion which means that there is cancer floating around in her bloodstream waiting to land and take root somewhere. Winter is a hospice cat and we're looking for a loving and patient home for her where she can continue to live out the rest of her days in peace. With a slow and proper introduction, Winter would do okay with another FeLV positive cat. She is currently being fostered in Brighton. Story
Meet Precious, a 9-yr old, beautiful, long haired Tortie girl. Precious is a sweet lady looking for a loving home to settle down in. She doesn’t require much from her humans — just a soft spot to take long naps, a safe place to watch over her kingdom from, and lots of gentle pets and brushing sessions. She especially loves forehead rubs and will gift you by allowing you to scratch her chin, which is a bright orange color. She also sometimes flops down at your feet so she can rub her head against your toes! Her vocalizations are very cute too — she sounds like a baby lamb or goat (“baaa!”). Precious is an affectionate girl once she is comfortable and will do best with an owner who can be patient and give her plenty of space at first. Though she will warm up to her humans tremendously, she may swat or nip at you if overstimulated or touched in sensitive spots. She doesn’t mean you any harm (in fact she always asks for more pets immediately afterwards), it’s just her way of saying, “Please don’t touch me there!” Precious is beloved in her foster home and her foster parents will miss her very much when she is adopted! Precious should go to a home without other pets or children, though she will absolutely bring joy to a quiet adult household. Precious is currently on prescription food, though we do not know if the vet will recommend this as a long-term plan. If you are interested in finding out more about Precious, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://forms.gle/ZfhWg4o7sdGHTcf56 Precious is currently being fostered in Cambridge, MA.
