She’s smart, eager, and full of puppy energy — the shelter is no place for a baby like her. Volunteers say she’s quick to learn and loves to sit patiently for treats. She just needs structure, love, and a home that can show her what life outside a kennel feels like.

Story
Here's what my friends at the shelter had to say about me! “When I first met Sasha, she was shaking uncontrollably and trying to make herself as small as possible. She broke my heart and I cried right there. Who made her feel this scared? After a little time she warmed up enough to let me put a bandana on her and take some cute pics. She has the sweetest face and the most soulful eyes. Even though she was stressed, she seemed comforted by having another dog nearby. When I checked on her later, she had gathered every toy in her kennel and curled up with them in her bed. She just wants to feel safe. She deserves a warm bed, a patient human, and all the toys her heart wants.”

A few words to describe Harper -- young and drop dead gorgeous! Harper is here and ready for a fabulous new year! Harper is a young female Shepherd mix girl who arrived at the shelter after being found on the side of a road with a bag of food and fractured leg. Now fully healed, Harper is on the smaller size for a shepherd. She is a people lover who will do best in a home with those familiar with shepherd personality and who can provide her with regular but not too intense activity. She will also benefit in a home environment where she can be busy as she likes to learn new things. She seems to do well with other dogs at the shelter but, as always, a meet and greet with any existing dogs in the home is necessary. This sweet dog is just waiting to be your best friend. Beauty and brains are hard to beat. Harper is a courtesy post for the Brooke County Animal Shelter in Beechbottom, WV, about 45 minutes from Pittsburgh. Please contact the shelter at 304-394-0800 for more information on Harper or to arrange a meet and greet.January 19, 2026, 12:35 pm

We just need him to go to someone who has experience with his dog breed type. We live in a tiny apartment, my husband and I. He needs space to run around and proper training. And we are struggling financially. Just want him in a proper home environment where he can thrive properly. It's just not the right time for us to have a pet.

Story
Meet Gauge, a 3 year old, 72lb Dutch Shepherd mix! Gauge is that dream companion who glues himself to your side in the sweetest way. He’s tall, handsome, and goofy in all the right ways — a true Velcro dog who wants nothing more than to be part of whatever you’re doing. Laundry? He’s supervising. Movie night? He’s on the couch before you are. Someone else is in your lap? No problem, Gauge will squeeze himself right in. 💕 He’s an affectionate, easygoing guy who reads the room well. Want a playmate? He’ll happily wrestle and romp with other dogs. Want a relaxed afternoon? He’ll chill out and chew a bone. His absolute favorite thing is sitting on the porch beside you, watching deer and squirrels like it’s his full-time job. 🦌🌿 Here’s what makes Gauge a total catch: ✔️ Fully crate trained ✔️ Potty trained ✔️ Gentle taking treats ✔️ Comes when called ✔️ Dog-friendly ✔️ Medium/low energy ✔️ Great house manners (as long as snacks aren’t on the counter 👀) Gauge has such a big heart and truly wants his person. He’s polite in public, thoughtful with new dog friends, and always ready for belly rubs. He’d prefer a cat-free home, but otherwise he’s the easiest, most lovable buddy you could ask for.

Story
Meet Tiny Tim! Tiny Tim came to us after being found as a stray by a good samaritan. Tiny Tim is a special boy at only 1 year old, and he has a ton of energy but can also be sensitive to some handling, and would need an experienced dog handler who can handle the energy of a Malinois mix. Tiny Tim requires a home who have previous shepherd or shepherd dog type experience. He would do best in a home with only adults who understand his boundaries and will respect his needs. He would also prefer a home with no kitty friends. Are you interested in being his new best friend? Fill out an application -> thinkingoutsidethecage.org All of our animals are altered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines before being made available for adoption.
