Story
Meet Kenny, a young male Golden Retriever Mix (possibly mixed with shepherd) who came into rescue after his family didn’t have time for him. Kenny is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 years old and is big, playful, sensitive, and very smart. Kenny is basically a big puppy. He is a tall boy with a gorgeous coat and long, fluffy tail. When he chases the ball or runs he is a bit klutzy! He hops and pounces on his toys (and his humans sometimes, but he’s learning). He loves to play tug and fetch.  He is a smart boy and a fast learner. His foster family is working with him on ‘drop it’, and also on some typical puppy behaviors (being mouthy, jumpy, and pawing for attention). He needs daily exercise (30min-1 hr, twice a day walks plus play in between). He’s very energetic but will calm down nicely. Mental stimulation in addition to aerobic exercise is important for him. Kenny can be a bit shy and timid initially.  For instance, the first couple days in your home, he may not eat. Then, you may need to sit nearby while he eats. Or, you may need to hold the bowl while he eats.   Kenny LOVES attention and is persistent about getting your attention if you’re not engaged with him (ie, nose-butting you or grabbing your ankles with his paws). He walks very well on leash, with a few gentle reminders along the way. He will pull toward other dogs and maybe a bark or two but redirects pretty easily. This is not aggression but excitement. He does the same with the neighborhood cats. He is curious and alert when he hears noises around the house. He will alert to it, watch, and cock his head in the most adorable way. New sights and sounds can spook him, so he will need patience and reassurance. If something startles him in the backyard, he will bark, run inside the door…and keep barking toward the outside. He was afraid of the rocking chair, and the black granite fireplace. His foster family is reassuring him by introducing the “thing” again, slowly. They stay near him and let him sniff and explore. This is working well. Kenny was treated very roughly by his former owners, so earning trust can take some time. To help him, Kenny has spent some time with a positive reinforcement trainer where he learned a lot, including “go to place/bed”, Sit, Down, Ready (ie to receive a cue), being gentle with treats, crate training, etc. He was also evaluated for head, neck & ear handling sensitivity which resulted from his former owners rough handling. He does not like being handled around the neck and ears; and will cower and twirl around if you sneak up from behind. Giving him a cue or alert so he knows you’re there helps a lot. Until he learns to trust, Kenny’s humans will need to go slow with him. Kenny thinks every human and dog is a play toy for him. He greets by going fast, right up to a dog’s muzzle and nudging, then going in for the play. He also will “belly-down” and crawl to them. Or, he might just do the play bow, and jump right up to start pawing and gnawing on them (a bit fast for some dogs). Kenny would like a home with active humans and an all-adult home, and also social opportunities to play with other dogs. A yard is important for him as throughout the day he trots around and explores. Someone home more than not – Kenny is smart and will “self-employ” if left alone too long (he gets curious and bored and needs direction). We would like humans who will respect that Kenny needs time to adjust and a continued positive reinforcement approach to be followed to recondition his previous “punishment oriented” training. If you are interested in Kenny, please complete our adoption application. Questions can be directed to nancy@roversretreat.org

Story
Lucie is a bombshell with a smile that requires sunshades to not be blinded.   She is 4 years old and has the most beautiful pearly whites that have been very well taken care of.  Lucie has a permanent cheeky wink!  She lost her left eye to a foxtail that got in it and then ulcerated.  It does not bother her one bit and she has learned to compensate by turning her head to see all the sights and using all her other senses well.   Lucie is a people lover and her tail goes a mile a minute anytime you say her name. She wants all the cuddles and the kisses!   Dogs she can give or take – she ignores them mostly. She is a little jealous of loving given to any dog that is not her and will try to edge her nose in for pets too!   She has lived with a cat and ignores them too. Lucie has been in a home where her foster mom has to work at a desk most the day and Lucie will curl up as soon as the door to the office opens and sleep there without stirring until it’s time for a walk.  However, there is gentle snoring.  Lucie is on the portly side – 101lb, and the snoring likely comes from that.  The good thing is she enjoys walks and walking is what will help her lose the weight and then likely the snoring will go too!  A good mile a couple of times a day is a great start to get her into hiking shape. She pulls to get out the door, but then walks nicely on a leash and is eager to please.   She is also on a metabolic food that will kick start, and continue to help, getting her to a healthy weight – closer to 65lb.   Lucie sleeps all night long and is happy on a dog bed or the floor of your bedroom, but do not forget the kisses and cuddles before you settle down for the night.   She has learned the doggy door in her foster home, but she will find it much easier to get in and out once she loses some girth. Lucie has had no accidents at all in her foster home and will potty on command.  Just show her where to go and she is a fast learner!  Lucie knows sit, down, shake, high five, and likely some more tricks we do not yet know about. She is learning off as she can counter surf if something smells really good. She travels well in a car and will lay down. She is crate trained if needed, though it’s not her favourite thing and again, at her weight it’s likely not the most comfortable. Lucie is a gentle, friendly, happy girl who would be the perfect companion to anyone looking for the typical golden retriever.  We think she would be good in a family with dog savvy children or your one and only. If you’re interested in making Lucie a part of your family, please complete our adoption application. Questions can be addressed to nancy@roversretreat.org

Story
Lady Guinevere is a very sweet 4-year-old Golden Retriever. She was previously a breeder dog, and is now looking for a life of love, comfort and ease. Lady G would like a home where someone is around most of the time. She is fine with other dogs (although not particularly playful with them so far) and she can be a bit shy with people and dogs when she first meets them. She loves her walks, so a moderately active family is a must. Lady G does require daily eye drops and periodic eye check-ups, and would like some help losing a little bit of weight. She's ready to find her forever home where she can get lots of love, cuddles and walks.

Penny is a great dog! She is adorable and sweet and loves people. Here are some pros and cons -Very obedient, smart dog -trained on e collar - trained as implied stay (down means down and stay) -fully crate trained - sleeps all night in her kennel and can sleep in til like 945 without her making a peep -;place trained, we keep her on her cot hours at a time and a good majority of the day. - great in car. We either have her in kennel in the back of the car or at the floor of shotgun -excellent walker. Even great walker off leash -cute as can be - great size, only like 30-35 lbs -plays great with other dogs (never lived with another dog) Penny cons -resource guarding - some (very limited) unpredictable aggression

Story
About Me  Age:  6 years...This darling girl is Amelia. One of our rescue supporters noticed Amelia was sadly running out of time at the shelter, and thankfully they stepped in to help ensure this sweet girl got another chance at life. Although she is clearly not a purebred golden, DNA analysis revealed that her predominant breed is, in fact, golden retriever. What we do know is that she is 100% adorable! When a friend of her fosters saw her for the first time, she exclaimed, “why, she looks like a woodland creature!” That idea stuck with us as it summed up her sweet, quizzical nature, watchful eyes, funny fuzzy feet, ears that don’t match, and super soft (low-shedding) fur you can sink your fingers into. This adorable woodland creature has completed her medical treatment for a horrific ear infection and is now ready to find her forever home.  Amelia is super easy-going. She likes to be near her people, but she is also content sunbathing alone in her backyard throughout the day or lying nearby watching her family. She doesn’t bark much. She has impeccable house manners (fully housebroken, no begging or counter surfing, doesn’t jump, is not destructive, sleeps great all night long) and can be left home alone without any issues. She enjoys her walks and is great in the car. She does not seem to be interested in toys or playing all that much, but perhaps that is because her current dog housemate isn’t really into those things either. Amelia hasn’t met a stranger she doesn’t love and happily rolls over for belly rubs when her foster grandchildren visit. Amelia is estimated to be about six years old and is mellow, but still has plenty of energy to join you on your adventures. She is short and stout and weighs 65 lbs. She is a smart girl who already knows some commands: come, sit, stay, and shake. Her foster family absolutely adore her! Amelia is a real gem who is going to seamlessly fit into her new family and enhance their lives immensely from day one.  My Ideal Home  Amelia would likely adapt to a variety of households. She is friendly with her current fosters’ dog, a super mellow male golden retriever. She has also met other male dogs that visited her home without an issue. However, she doesn’t seem to appreciate all dogs and greets dogs on-leash with a posture that reads “stay away.” She likely has some past trauma regarding other dogs, so she relies on her people to ask other owners to give her space on walks. She is not aggressive on leash, but she is not the type of dog that wants to go to a dog park, etc. She seems to be more receptive to meeting large male dogs. We do not think she would make a good companion for small dogs or active female dogs. She is perfectly happy just lounging around the house with her people, so perhaps she would do best as an only fur child with some people that are also homebodies. She appears to have a high prey drive towards squirrels, so we strongly feel she would not be a good fit for a home with a cat. Amelia is very sweet with the young children that frequently visit her foster home (ages 3, 5, and 7) and would likely do well in a home with respectful children or visiting grandchildren. She would also fit well into a quiet home with lower activity. She really enjoys exploring her backyard, so continuous access to a sunny outdoor space would be at the very top of her wish list. She is a very special dog looking for a special person to call her own.  Want to Adopt me?  If you believe your home is the perfect match for me, please make sure you have first submitted an adoption application and completed your home interview with a SCGRRescue Volunteer. Then, tell my personal representative (aka Rep) more about why we are a great match via email at dontstopretrieving77@gmail.com Please note:  We are only able to cover and adopt out to residents of Southern California. Story
Hi! My name is Tomo, and I am waiting to be matched to my forever home! I was rescued from the dog meat trade in South Korea by the DoVE Project. My fate would have been to live in fear and distress, watching dogs being led to slaughter for human consumption. DoVE Project heard about me, and now I am looking for my forever family! ID/NAME: CARE23-054 / Tomo SEX/WEIGHT/AGE: Male / 60.6 lbs / 8 years BIRTH DATE: April, 2015 BREED: Golden Retriever SPAY/NEUTER/VACCINATIONS: Spayed. Vaccinations complete. Health/physical characteristics: Tomo’s teeth are notably decayed and missing. Scratch marks on his nose. Six claws on each hind leg. BEHAVIOR: Tomo is. quiet and polite 9-year-old Golden Retriever mix. He was once someone's pet but somehow ended up in the hands of a dog meat trader. Her was rescued in 2022 and we're very happy that he is now living a life free from fear, hunger, and thirst. He is still finding his way, after keeping to himself but with each day he becomes more trusting of humans. While he may need some extra care and attention, we do not doubt that the bond he will share with his forever family will be very special. SIBLINGS/FAMILY: Unknown BACKGROUND: When Tomo was rescued, he was unhealthy and severely malnourished, requiring veterinary care. After receiving care, he seemed to revel in being clean, having meals, and in living in better conditions. ABOUT JINDOS Jindos are known for their fierce loyalty, high intelligence, rarely barking, and playful nature. They make great indoor family dogs, as Jindos are clean and easily housetrained, and are faithful to family members. They are also mid-level active and love being socialized at dog parks, going on hikes, and joining the family on trips. ABOUT OUR DOGS DoVE dogs come from a traumatic background such as dog meat farms and slaughterhouses. While many of our dogs acclimate within a few months with consistency, structure, and patience, some of our more sensitive dogs can take longer to rehabilitate. It's important to note that these sensitive dogs are even more attuned to human emotions and behavior, making for a deeper connection human-dog connection. DoVE Project is committed to helping our adopters desensitize and socialize our dog meat trade survivors. ********************************* DoVE Project operates a shelter in South Korea, where our dogs stay until they are matched with an adopter. In the US, our dogs stay in foster homes or in boarding, as we do not have a physical facility. These dogs are identified with "in LA" in their names. Please note that we only adopt our pups in the Southern California area. Please check our website for more information regarding our adoption process, our mission, and adoption application: https://www.dove-project.org/adoption-process If you are interested in adopting, please complete an online application at: https://www.dove-project.org/adoption-application-form.
