Meet Hugo Hugo is an absolute miracle with a heart just as big as his story. This 6-year-old, 14.5-pound Maltese Terrier mix was found abandoned outside a liquor store in the pouring rain and rescued by the amazing team at Hope for Paws. When Hugo first came into care, he was completely blind due to severe cataracts. We immediately took over his care and rushed him to a veterinary ophthalmologist, knowing there was a chance surgery could restore his vision. Sadly, one eye could not be saved due to a fully detached retina—but hope remained for the other. Hugo bravely underwent surgery, and although complications initially made the outcome uncertain, this sweet boy persevered. After three weeks of intensive eye drops and injections, Hugo was able to see again. This was an absolute miracle. Today, Hugo is a loving, happy boy who truly enjoys life. He loves car rides, going on walks, playing with toys, and spending time with his doggie friends. He does best with slow introductions to new dogs, but once he’s comfortable, he’s friendly and playful. Hugo absolutely adores people and wants to be wherever his humans are—he’s a loyal little shadow who thrives on companionship. Hugo will need daily eye drops for the rest of his life and periodic ophthalmology rechecks to monitor his eyes. The good news? He’s a very good boy about getting his drops and handles his care like a champ. Hugo is looking for a calm, loving home that will continue his care and cherish the incredible soul he is. Weighing just 15 pounds, she’s the perfect size for cozy couch cuddles, or quietly following you as your loyal little shadow. With her gorgeous long blonde coat and soulful golden eyes, Bella is truly a showstopper. Her coat is hypoallergenic, and we believe she may be a Maltese or Lhasa Apso mix. Calm, sweet, and affectionate, Bella is a sensitive girl who bonds deeply with her people. Bella can be shy and a bit skittish with new people, especially at first. She will need a patient, understanding adopter who is willing to give her the time and space she needs to decompress, build trust, and gain confidence at her own pace. Because of this, Bella would do best in a quiet household with minimal comings and goings of strangers. She is fully house-trained and well-mannered in the home. Bella enjoys leisurely backyard exploration followed by snuggling up for peaceful cuddle time. She does well with other dogs, cats, and older children, making her a lovely companion in a calm, respectful environment. Bella does have separation anxiety and struggles when left alone, including in a crate. She is comfortable resting in her crate when her people are home, but she will need an adopter who is home most of the time and willing to patiently help her work through her anxiety with consistency and reassurance. Health-wise, Bella is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations. She was rescued from the Palmdale shelter along with her baby, Fiona, and proved to be an incredible mama. Now that her puppy is grown, it’s Bella’s turn to be cherished. Meet Big Mac... another fantastic dog dumped in a shelter. Big Mac is a mischievous pup. He has great self esteem and loves to play and snuggle. He walks well on a leash, is crate trained and potty trained. He will require an active household to meet his needs both physically and mentally. He can be a little rascal if not. He is around 1 year old and weighs 15 pounds. All dogs in our program are up to date on all their shots, spayed or neutered, and micro chipped. Our dogs are in foster homes which enables us to learn more about them in a home environment. We do not place dogs on a first come first serve basis, but rather to the home best suited for them. Maye is a sweet 2-3 year old Maltese mix who came to West LA Shelter as a stray — and let’s just say she arrived as a bit of a hot mess express. Thanks to the shelter, she got a much-needed glow up, and her true personality is starting to shine. At the shelter, Maye was very scared but still sought out cuddles and kisses from volunteers, showing just how loving she is at heart. Now in a cozy foster home, she’s decompressing, learning what the good life is all about, and absolutely loving it. Her favorite things so far? Snuggling on the couch and learning how to play fetch like a proper little pup. Maye is still settling in, but she’s already proving to be a gentle, affectionate girl who just needed a soft place to land.
