Zola is a 6 month old Min Pin mix who currently weighs about 12 lbs— and she’s as sweet, gentle, and affectionate as they come. Her foster family describes her as playful, easygoing, and full of love. Once she gets to know you, she becomes a devoted little shadow who loves being close and sharing quiet affection.   Zola starts her mornings around 8 a.m. with an enthusiastic tail wag when she sees her leash come out—she’s learned that walks are one of the best parts of the day! She’s made wonderful progress on leash manners; she walks nicely without pulling, doesn’t bark at people or other dogs, and enjoys taking in all the sights and smells. She goes on three walks a day, plus a quick nighttime potty trip before bed, and she’s done all her business outside so far.   After breakfast (which she likes to nibble on gradually through the day), Zola enjoys hopping around and playing. She can’t resist zoomies whenever she’s given the chance! She’s energetic but knows how to settle on her dog bed for a nap when things quiet down.   When Zola first arrived, she was a little shy and hesitant to explore, but her confidence has blossomed beautifully. She now greets her people happily, follows them from room to room, and gently nudges for pets when she wants attention. She’s wonderfully responsive and listens so well— if she’s about to get into something she shouldn’t and hears a calm “no,” she stops, looks up, and trots right over.   Zola gets along well with the medium-sized resident dog in her foster home. At first, she was unsure about playing, but as she’s settled in, she’s started to initiate gentle play sessions. She’s also met other dogs on her walks and greets them politely and calmly. She hasn’t been around cats, but she’s shown such a gentle nature that she’d likely adjust with proper introductions. She’s also been kind and quiet around children she’s met out and about.   Zola doesn’t bark or chew, and she isn’t destructive— she just wants to be near her people and feel secure. She’s not a fan of the crate, but she sleeps soundly on her dog bed through the night and is trustworthy.   Her ideal home would be one where she can get daily walks, playtime, and plenty of companionship. She’d love a kind, patient adopter who enjoys including her in family life and helping her continue learning as she grows. She’d do well as a solo pup or with another friendly dog who matches her calm, gentle energy.   What sets Zola apart is her combination of sweetness and smarts. She’s eager to please, affectionate without being demanding, and has such a soft, loving way about her. Her foster’s favorite moments are when she tilts her head at her name or wags her tail the instant she realizes it’s walk time— it’s impossible not to smile back at her.   Zola has come such a long way from the shy little girl she once was, and she’s now ready to find a forever family to love her as much as she’ll love them. Whoever adopts her will be getting a loyal, gentle companion with a heart full of joy and devotion.November 13, 2025, 8:05 pm

Story
Meet Beau, the miniature pinscher! This guy originally arrived with a partner - another miniature pinscher who has been adopted. Beau is energetic and agile - willing to `work` at training, a doggie sport, or active games. He`ll thrive with daily mental and physical stimulation, and he does best if he doesn`t have to spend extended periods by himself. If you are looking for a smaller-sized hiking or jogging buddy or have an interest in trick or obedience training, this guy may be your match. Beau has met other dogs at the Shelter and has been interested in meeting them, but can be a bit selective in who we wants as his dog friends. We recommend that potential adopters arrange for a resident dog to meet here at the shelter prior to adoption to see whether they show potential for friendship and co-existence. Beau and his friend were chasing cats when they were found, so a home with cats would need to proceed with caution. He`s also shown he`s not totally passive when it comes to being handled or picked up abruptly or by kids - pretty typical of his breed - and probably a better fit for a home with older, dog-savvy kiddos, if any. Beau`s adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation thanks to “Leave No One Behind fund” – designed to adopter’s eyes towards animals who have been in the Shelter’s care a little longer than average waiting for the right adopter. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Hennessy is a tender-hearted senior Terrier/Chihuahua mix with a gentle spirit and soulfulbeyes. He’s seeking a second chance after a stretch of heartbreaking challenges. Hennessy has been through a lot—but he’s never stopped being gentle, loving, and full of hope. He and another senior dog, Luna, have spent their lives together as members of a small but loving pet family that also included a kitty named Mia. But when their owner lost her apartment, the little family was forced to live in a car. Now, although their owner has secured a new job and a place to live, sadly, the pets are not allowed to join her. She reached out to us, heartbroken, hoping someone would step forward to give her beloved companions the life they deserve. Hennessy adores people and has a soft spot for cats. Now he is looking for a home full of love, cozy spots, and kind people. Most of all, he just wants to be someone’s beloved boy again. Can you give Hennessy the peaceful retirement he deserves?
