**We adopt our dogs to families within 50 miles of Grants Pass, Oregon. All applications are screened for compatibility with the dog of interest. We will ask for pictures of your home and yard. If you are interested in being considered as a potential adopter, please fill out our online application at: www.samsimonfoundation.org. Follow the tabs to 'dogs for adoption'. Kiko is a 16 pound, neutered male Shih Tzu, approximately 5 years old. He has a few 'special needs' so we are looking for an adopter that has experience with his breed and temperament. He can be feisty and he needs someone who can interpret his behavior for what it is and not be afraid of him. He truly can be sweet and cuddly and fun to be with. He just needs the right home where he feels safe and understood. He will need someone that can afford the extra expense of his dog food and grooming. He doesn't like being groomed or handled in that way and he will snap at anyone that tries to do those things. He will need a muzzle and possibly be sedated at the vet and the groomer. Kiko is very sweet and loyal and loves all people. He's confident in public places and loves going for car rides. He will bark excitedly at other dogs but we have worked on this and he is improving. He will need continued training to maintain these improvements. He doesn't like being left home alone so an adopter that is home most of the time would be best. He is selfish about his resources around other dogs, especially when it comes to squeaky toys and other items that he cherishes. For that reason, we are not going to place him in a home with other dogs nor children under age 10. He does share his toys well with adult humans. Kiko is healthy except for occasional crystals in his urine which, if left untreated, will lead to bladder/kidney stones and urinary tract infections. We keep his urinary tract healthy with a simple prescription diet designed for dogs with this tendency. He is currently eating a high-quality prescription diet for dogs with urinary issues from a company called Just Food For Dogs. This food is human quality food specially designed for dogs. It is an expensive food but the benefit of it is that he likes it and it is keeping him healthy. As a housebroken and well-mannered indoor companion, Kiko is ready to bring joy and companionship to his forever home. While he'd love a house with a yard, he's not suited for apartment or condo living. If you're looking for a loyal friend to share your life with, Kiko might be the perfect fit. With his loving personality and adaptable nature, he's sure to steal your heart. No one will ever love you more than Kiko!

THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND CONSIDERATION INTRODUCING DOLBY….and another tragic story to report 🙁 At 12 lbs, 4 yrs old and tri colored, this very special Shih Tzu boy was given to a good Samaritan who took him because she wanted to keep him out of the shelter when his humans were moving. She was told he had a hernia…but in fact it was a testicular tumor. He had never been neutered and the tumor grew to be the size of a baseball before she handed him over to us — never disclosing this information. We got him to our vet and were very worried initially — how such a sweet, easygoing, loving dog could end up this way. GOOD NEWS while the tumor was malignant, it was the type that the oncologist says doesn’t metastasize, so the cancer was gone! We have done a needle biopsy to clear the lymph nodes and everything was negative — which for us was very positive! Dolby’s foster reports that he is one of the easiest going pups he has ever experienced and is a joy to be around. He was playing voraciously with his foster buddy despite the fact that he had an abdomen full of stitches from his surgery! They are still working on his potty training but report he is getting it! He is not hyper but loves to play…not super interested in toys at this point. Loves belly rubs as all dogs do…and is a super kissy lover! He is not yappy or barky but will say hello to the other dogs walking on the street! Not an aggressive bone in his body. Because of his fantastic nature, he could probably go into almost any home – but preferably one with another dog and a family who will cherish him. He is very people and dog oriented and whomever adopts him will be bringing in a wonderful family member. Does that sound like you? He will not be available until the beginning of November. This precious 10.5 lb, 7-8 yr old, tri colored (mostly white), Shih Tzu is the true definition of a lap dog. She can be independent at times (mostly when she is sleeping) but her favorite place is sitting on the couch with you while you watch Netflix! She likes to snuggle with you in bed at night, so if you don’t want this….she’s not for you! We haven’t seen Mimosa actually play with toys, but she does run after them, well maybe trot, but doesn’t do anything with them. Mostly, she likes to be with her human and we don’t think her feet ever touch the ground all too often, as she’s not sure where the bathroom is…she has had a few accidents but mostly she goes outside. Mimosa is a good eater but we don’t think she was pampered in her former home. She came to us with a back full of scabs from biting and chewing at herself. She has been on antibiotics to clear it up, she’s been groomed and she is only eating the best food and treats! More and more of her personality reveals itself the longer we’ve had her but we know she is absolutely precious and even though she might be part diva, she will make someone a very happy parent! ***ADOPTION PENDING*** PLEASE READ THIS PROFILE AND THE REQUESTED CRITERIA BEFORE CALLING OR SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION. THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND CONSIDERATION MEET PANDA…a precious 11 lb., black/white, 5-6 yr old Shih Tzu X — maybe with Maltese — who hails from Mexico! This little one-eyed wonder was rescued off the streets of Tijuana with a torn ACL and not the best hips (no surgery needed at this time)…but lucky for him rescuers who specialize in saving these babies from there came to his rescue! They contacted us and we were happy to take him. He looks so much like a Panda…that had to be his name! Panda is a sweetheart, but as you can imagine, after coming off the streets of a foreign country and then traveling to San Diego and then Los Angeles to us, he is still a bit shut down and confused. He is quiet as a mouse, eats like he loves his new food and is very low key. Panda relished in having a warm bed, good food, a roof over his head and lots of cuddling and loving. He has been neutered, got a dental and is now having orthopedic surgery to help him to get healthy and some normalcy in his life. We are not sure how he tore his ACL, and he has learned to cope with it — but he will be happier when it’s healed. He hasn’t been able to enjoy playing or running around, but now will will be able to do everything! Panda won’t be available to adopt until after the New Year (4-6 weeks recovery), but we will make appointments to see and pre-adopt him if the right home presents itself. What we know about him is he is a happy boy, likes to go on walks now that he knows how to walk on a leash (and will love his walks once he no longer limps 🙁) and is a really sweet, wonderful boy. Everyone who has met Oliver comment on how joyful he is — from the vet to the groomer — and we have to agree We had to include a picture of Oliver with all the toys he collected to illustrate how much he loves toys! He will chase after them and grab one from wherever he is…but gently and not aggressively! We have yet to hear him bark, but he doesn’t like being left alone so another pup must be in his future. We would also like his family to be around to give him a lot of love and attention, which he will return multiple times over! He is a great eater, and if there are other dogs around he might check out what they have in their bowls to make sure he has the best one! But when you direct him back to his bowl, he is compliant! Oliver also loves to get belly rubs and if you are looking to calm him down, that’s the way to do it….he actually goes into nirvana until the belly rub is over — and if he isn’t sleeping, he is busy kissing your face all over…one of his favorite things to do!
