Story
Sweet Wilbur was in a high kill shelter in North Carolina. He was literally minutes away from being euthanized. We were already taking a female Walker Hound from this shelter when we got the call about Wilbur. The shelter director called us and asked if we could possibly take Wilbur as well, since he was about to be put to sleep. Well of course we said yes and the two were immediately transported to us. Wilbur was found as a stray and his owner was actually located but chose not to come and get since he wasn't the "perfect" hunter, sad. Well, we are happy that we saved him because he is just the sweetest, most gentle boy you will ever meet. He has been neutered and is fully vaccinated. He is crate trained, microchipped and heart worm negative. A large fenced yard is preferred for these hounds as they like to wander if not properly contained and we do not allow our dogs to be tied up outside. He is good with cats and young children as well, just the perfect hound dog! PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE LOCATED IN TENNESSEE AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MEET OUR PETS PRIOR TO ADOPTION! ADOPTION FEE $500

Story
We saw sweet Ginny on Facebook. She was a stray that ended up in a high kill shelter in Virginia. Shortly after she arrived she gave birth to 4 puppies. The shelter had no idea that she was pregnant because she was nothing but skin and bones. We knew we somehow had to get her here to Tennessee so we put our thinking caps on and a lot of wonderful volunteers drove her to our pick up spot in southern VA where our regular transporter picked her and the babies up on his way back to Nashville. We met them in Nashville at 1 AM and drove the family 100 miles back to the rescue. We knew Ginny was young, possibly still a pup herself and our vet confirmed that she was only 11 months at the time of the puppy's birth. Her pups have all been adopted and now it's Ginny's turn! Walker Hounds are very high energy dogs and can be a little stubborn so make sure you research the breed before you make the choice to adopt. We insist on a fenced yard for her so she can have room to free run and enjoy the rest of her life. These dogs are the number one dumped off breed as their owners will desert them if they don't hunt the way they want them too! We have several of them here at the rescue for that very reason. They are fun loving couch potatoes and will bring you many years of joy and happiness! PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE LOCATED IN TENNESSEE AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MEET OUR PETS PRIOR TO ADOPTION! ADOPTION FEE $650

Story
Hi my name is Maverick.  I am a Beagle Tree Walker Coonhound mix who weighs about 50 lbs.  I am a little over a year old.  I am a super sweet and very loving boy.  I love people and am great with other dogs.  I had a little bump in the road when I lived in the country as I do not like chickens.  What else would you expect a hound do do.  I am now in a wonderful foster home in the suburbs.  I was actually glad to get out of the country and into a home where I am loved and taken good care of.  I have learned to walk well on a leash and am totally housebroken.  You can leave me loose in the house and I do not bother anything.  I am looking for an active home with another big young dog so that I have someone to play with.  I have the best time playing with my foster brother.  We don't have a fenced in yard so that is not a must but it would be nice though to have room to run and play.   I have lived with a toddler so you don't have to worry about me around small children.  I am also a boy that can go to the dog park or to doggie day care.  I am great at both places as I do not meet a stranger whether you have 2 or 4 legs.  If you are looking for a big, goofy boy who will love you to pieces and give you plenty of kisses, then you have found him.  I would love you to talk to my foster mom.  She will cannot say enough good things about me and will definitely sing my praises.  I am current on all my shots, neutered and microchipped.  I am ready to travel to my forever home.  To be considered for Maverick's forever family and to request an application please contact Vivienne directly at viviennejames@comcast.net.  APPROVED APPLICATION AND ADOPTION FEE REQUIRED.  (Maverick is currently in Tennessee but can be transported north upon adoption.)February 29, 2024, 8:59 am

Story
My name is Winnie and I am a loving 7 year old, 50 pound girl that is a beautiful Hound breed called a Tree Walker.   I was found as a stray in the middle of a rural highway and I am such a soft and gentle girl that loves to lay around and sleep and just be an easy couch potato friend. I am housebroken, love a good tummy rub, pretty nice to all other dogs that I meet and I would be a great companion to a senior, retired person or couple who are looking for an easy dog to love.  I am healthy and spayed and microchipped and I am told that I am pretty, too.  Would you like to have a sweet companion for the next 7-8 years.  I will be happy to make your life so much more special if you invite me home.  Critter Cavalry Rescue is ready to help you adopt me if you write to them at ccrnewengland@gmail.com PLEASE NOTE:   Our dogs and cats are fostered in Tennessee and can transport weekly up to the Northeast region.  Request an application and learn more about Critter Cavalry at https://www.crittercavalry.com/adoption.February 29, 2024, 8:59 am

Story
Howdy! I'm Ozzy! I'm a handsome boy who is getting to know the world. A lot can be scary for a dog like me who hasn't had a lot of experiences in the real world. I'm shy at first but will warm up quickly if you give me some yummy chicken. Cars and new sounds can be a little scary for me too, so I'll need someone to help introduce me to new things and show me all the great things in life! My favorite thing to do is play soccer - kick the ball for me and watch me (and my ears) bounce with excitement! I also love sniffing and exploring the trails here at FOHA. Because I'm still learning how to be confident in a world of uncertainty, I will do best in a home without children. If you'd like to get to know me a little better, submit an application and we can set up a time to meet. Hope to see you soon!! This wonderful boy is Walker. He is a big, loveable boy that enjoys playing. He gets excited when he sees a cat or a squirrel like any good hound would. He really likes to hang out with people and other dogs. He has the softest ears and just loves it when you give him ear scratches. He is housetrained and wags his entire body when he sees his humans. He has never met a stranger and is just a big, loving lug. Cooper is a handsome Treeing Walker Coonhound who came to AFH from a rural shelter in southwest Virginia. He was originally found as a stray. He is so sweet. He gets along great with other dogs. He is also very good with people of all ages and sizes. Like any good hound, he is not good with kitties, but really is an awesome boy otherwise.Accuracy is not guaranteed; however, information provided is accurate to the best of our knowledge.  For more information on the pet, please send an email to info@aforeverhome.org March 2, 2024, 10:52 am

He loves to play chase and tug of war. He has a surprising soft and cuddly coat and loves to snuggle. When you pick him up he tucks his head right under your chin. He gets along great with kids in the neighborhood who like him "because he doesn't bite [nip] like other pups". He gets along great with his foster dog brother. He loves to play but is respectful when "told" no. Tater is doing really well with house training and has started indicating when he needs to go out. He sleeps through the night from about 10pm until 7:30 am. He is getting used to the crate and goes in on his own. He is an adorable tail wagging cutie pie. The adoption fee for this dog is $495-595. This fee INCLUDES spay/neuter and microchip. Ask me about our many adoption benefits that include free exams, pet insurance, training and other discounts! We are proud to partner with the following veterinarians who offer a free first exam for your animal, exclusively for HT adopters: Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Palisades Veterinary Clinic, Sunshine Animal Hospital and Clarendon Animal Care and all VCA Animal Hospitals. LOCATION: Homeward Trails Adoption Center ADOPTION COORDINATOR: Contact our awesome staff at adoptioncenter@homewardtrails.org ADOPTION FEE: The adoption fee for this dog is WAIVED as part of the Helping Happy Hounds Program!! ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 43 lbs KNOWN WITH DOGS: Kaiti has done well with some other dogs in play groups at the Adoption Center. However, due to some reported issues sharing a home with another canine, Kaiti will need to be the only dog in the home. KNOWN WITH CATS: We do not currently know how they are with cats. If that is needed, let us know and we'll work on getting that information! KNOWN WITH KIDS: We do not recommend Kaiti with children under 16 years old. Preferably, we would look for a home that does not have a lot of foot traffic. KNOWN COMMANDS: Kaiti is super smart and knows how to sit, shake, touch, place and working on leave it! KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING &/OR CRATING: Kaiti likes her crate and will retreat there if there are too many things happening around her. KNOWN LIKES: Kaiti loves to play fetch with tennis balls. She loves to get affection through pets and nuzzles. If you are looking for a loving, loyal, and active companion then Kaiti is your girl! KNOWN DISLIKES: Kaiti has some issues with men and needs a slow introduction where she can learn to love the guy. We would want her to learn this through positive reinforcement through treats and training! ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Kaiti is a sweet, spunky girl who loves being around people and quickly forms attachments. She sleeps all night in her crate and some during the day. She loves belly rubs, head pats, and ear scratches and loves chasing balls, toys, and running around. She would do well with a family who likes to go on walks, hikes, or runs with her and would enjoy a fenced backyard to play in. TAILS OUT ADVENTURES AND WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS SAY: Kaiti has gone out on multiple Tails Out adventures! She does very well with her stays in people's homes and has been described as low maintenance. She did not enjoy coming into contact with other dogs while on her walks. She may enjoy a fenced yard rather than urban living! HT ADOPTION INCLUSIONS: Spay/Neuter First 3 distemper series vaccines & de-wormings Microchip - lifetime with no registration fees Current on heartworm preventative Current on flea/tick preventative EXCLUSIVE ADOPTER BENEFITS: Free first exam with: Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Palisades Veterinary Clinic, Jermantown Animal Hospital and Clarendon Animal Care and all VCA Animal Hospitals (VCA offers $250 coverage - details provided) Free online workshop with a professional dog trainer at Fur-Get Me Not within the first 30 days of adopting (in DC/Arlington/Alexandria only) A portion of EVERY ADOPTION fee supports spay/neuter for animals in under-resourced communities BE A FOSTER: Save a life: http://www.homewardtrails.org/foster-a-pet/dog-and-cat-foster-program.
