Story
Meet Betty: 4yr old, female, Coonhound mix, 44 pounds. If interested in adopting Betty, please complete our nonbinding application: click here to send a non-binding application  Hedgesville Hounds took in Betty in December 2023.  While clearly very shy, her evaluators perceived a dog who wanted to trust humans and had a sweetness about her that was very promising.  Since coming into care, Betty’s health has improved by leaps and bounds.  Weighing about 27 pounds when she came to us, she now weighs a long, lean, and leggy 44 pounds.  Her once dull and rough coat is softer and shines in the sunlight.  Betty came to Hedgesville Hounds burdened with heartworms.  She did very well during her heartworm treatment and after 3 months of treatment, is now clear of any heartworm disease. Betty is a sweet and gentle dog.  She is very good about handling and is excellent at toenail clipping and ear cleaning.  Because of the heartworm disease, Betty spent months on crate rest.  Since being released from her physical restrictions, Betty has enjoyed her freedom and progressed to daily runs around the yard with other dogs and by herself, leaping off the deck and rolling around in the grass, chasing robins on the ground and buzzards in the air, even adding silly leaps and twists just for the sheer fun of it.  Betty’s foster Mom thinks she is mixed with some kind of site hound, like Whippet or Greyhound.  Betty is streamlined in shape, has long and delicate legs, a sleek head, and doesn’t like to SIT.  Her favorite positions are standing and fully reclining.  Jumping up on items does not come naturally to her, hence her rare use of the couch and her current inability to jump into the back of the car.  She doesn’t mind being lifted into the car and climbs right into the car crate.  She is an excellent and quiet car passenger. Betty is potty trained, and she can be trusted loose in the house as long as she gets outside every 3-4 hours during the day.  She is fine all night long, even uncrated.  Betty is crate-trained as well. She may whine a bit at first, but then she settles down well. Betty’s leash walking skills have steadily improved while in foster care.  When out on walks, Betty still tends to pull on the leash.  Her foster mom has been using a Gentle Leader head halter, which works better for her than a no-pull harness. Betty will need continued positive training and practice to master this skillfully. It seems like Betty is going through a second puppyhood as she has been exploring her world by mouth.   Nothing has been damaged beyond repair, but her new family will want to keep items out of her reach and continue to teach her what is appropriate to chew on.  Betty occasionally chews her Nylabones or soft chew toys.  She also really enjoys her Collagen Retriever Rolls (rawhide replacements). Betty would likely be best suited for someone who is home all or most of the day. We do not have any knowledge of her experience with children, therefore we recommend a home with children over age 10. A securely fenced yard with a 4ft or higher fence is a necessity.  Betty gets along well with other dogs and also with cats.  Betty has come a long way since she joined Hedgesville Hounds.  She has proven that our initial assessment of her sweetness was spot on.  She probably won’t win any obedience titles; however, if you’re looking for a gentle dog to simply love you unconditionally, well, Betty has the rule book memorized! click here to send a non-binding application

Story
https://foha.org/pet/ozzy2021/ Howdy! I'm Ozzy! I'm a handsome boy who is getting to know the world. A lot can be scary for a dog like me who hasn't had a lot of experiences in the real world. I'm shy at first but will warm up quickly if you give me some yummy chicken. Cars and new sounds can be a little scary for me too, so I'll need someone to help introduce me to new things and show me all the great things in life! My favorite thing to do is play soccer - kick the ball for me and watch me (and my ears) bounce with excitement! I also love sniffing and exploring the trails here at FOHA. Because I'm still learning how to be confident in a world of uncertainty, I will do best in a home without children. If you'd like to get to know me a little better, submit an application and we can set up a time to meet. Hope to see you soon!! Spayed or Neutered,
Story
This wonderful boy is Walker. He is a big, loveable boy that enjoys playing. He gets excited when he sees a cat or a squirrel like any good hound would. He really likes to hang out with people and other dogs. He has the softest ears and just loves it when you give him ear scratches. He is housetrained and wags his entire body when he sees his humans. He has never met a stranger and is just a big, loving lug. You could not ask for a better dog!Accuracy is not guaranteed; however, information provided is accurate to the best of our knowledge.  For more information on the pet, please send an email to info@aforeverhome.org April 24, 2024, 6:27 pm

Story
Cooper is a handsome Treeing Walker Coonhound who came to AFH from a rural shelter in southwest Virginia. He was originally found as a stray. He is so sweet. He gets along great with other dogs. He is also very good with people of all ages and sizes. Like any good hound, he is not good with kitties, but really is an awesome boy otherwise.Accuracy is not guaranteed; however, information provided is accurate to the best of our knowledge.  For more information on the pet, please send an email to info@aforeverhome.org April 24, 2024, 6:27 pm

Story
Show Yourself is a sweet and spunky pup with the prettiest blue eye! She loves going on walks, meeting other puppies and people, and cuddling up when she's tired. She gets along incredibly well with our 80lb dog and loves taking a long nap after one of their many play sessions. On top of all that, she's a quick learner and arleady knows sit, down and touch commands. She is 90% of the way there with potty training, and is great at letting us know when she needs to go out. She also sleeps completely through the night. She has become much more used to her crate and will sometimes even just decide to nap in it!  She would do great in a house that has another dog for her to play with. We also recommend a household where someone is home for a good portion of the day as she loves to be with others. She will be an amazing addition to any family!  Visit https://www.wtarescue.com/adoption-process-2 to learn about our adoption process! Mandatory in person transfer date: April 20th at the Petsmart in Tysons Corner between 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. All adopters must attend in order to finalize the adoption. ##1955405##

Story
Sandwiches is the perfect balance of cuddly and playful. You'll see his big endearing ears flopping in the wind as he energetically runs back and forth for his beloved crinkly toys during playtime.  When he tires out, he's always sure to find his way into your lap for naptime. While he loves a warm lap and cuddles, he also is learning to settle into his crate for his naptime.   Sandwiches has also made great progress with his outdoor potty training, running to the door when he needs to go and once he's done with his business let's you know when he's ready to come back inside. He hasn't had any accidents in the last few days!!!  While he's quickly learning puppy manners and commands. Helping him learn the do's and don'ts are his 2 resident dog friends and cat. Sweet spunky Sandwiches is ready for his forever home!  Visit https://www.wtarescue.com/adoption-process-2 to learn about our adoption process!
