Story
FOSTER CARE! Hello, my name is Rudy and I'm a 3-year-old, neutered Border Collie mix that currently weighs about 45lbs. I'm a sweet and friendly guy that's hoping for a family that understands my special needs don’t make me any less loveable! I have a chronic balance issue that causes me to have a bit of a wobble, especially when I'm excited. But don't worry, I'm still a happy go lucky guy and I've adapted just fine! Sometimes other animals don't understand my signature wobble, so I'd like meet any residents dogs to make sure we get along. For more information about me, just ask Customer Service about Rudy! ID# A960272 My foster family says I'm the bestest boy! Here's how I've been in their home: Rudy is such a good boy! He has a bit of a wobble, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying daily walks, going for short trots, and playing with the family. He does great in the car. He can jump in on his own (we act as a spotter just in case) and he sits patiently during the entre drive just taking in the sights and smells. He loves squeaky toys and sometimes carries them with him on walks. This adorable boy is very affectionate and is a constant companion. He will follow you around the house like a fur and LOVES to cuddle. We have been able to leave him home for the work day without any accidents. He will try to chase small animals like birds, cats, and wildlife so he will probably be best as the only child. He is an absolute joy to have and we hope he finds his forever family soon.  Since I’m not at the adoption center, you can make arrangements to meet me by emailing behavior@phs-spca.org You may also submit your fully completed Adoption Profile Form to behavior@phs-spca.org and a staff member will call you to conduct a phone interview before making an appointment to meet me in person. Story
Nyssa is a 3-4 year-old spayed female Border Collie, around 40 lbs, who was rescued from a local CA shelter. Sadly, before finding herself abandoned and alone at the shelter, she likely grew up in the backyard confined to a kennel. Nyssa is now learning to live as a domestic pet. Amazingly and despite this, she remains a lively, energetic, and otherwise healthy dog who is remarkably intelligent, craves human interaction, and is very loyal to her hooman. Nyssa is intelligent, already understanding various commands such as "sit," "leave it" “sit pretty” and "inside” to go into the house.  She is also deeply loyal to her guardian and has a strong capacity for forming deep bonds typical of her breed. She is truly a remarkable dog who has the capacity to grow into an even more amazing companion through continued obedience training and by establishing a trusting relationship with her guardian. Nyssa is incredibly affectionate and loves people. She can be around other dogs without being on leash reactive. However, off leash and once confident, she has a habit of herding dogs, considering the trait of her breed. Nyssa loves to play ball and might be a Treibball enthusiast!  She walks well on a loose leash, crate trained and housebroken and sleeps through the night on her dog bed. Tested well with cats, but like with dogs, once confident, it is possible she may try to herd them, so possible she may need supervision/management.  Ther Ideal Family for Nyssa is: &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143 Someone who understands her breed Border Collies, her adjustment to living in a home, and provides her sufficient mental and physical stimulation. &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143 Someone who values bonding with their dog and is ready to build a deep connection. &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143 Someone who can provide yard space for Nyssa to move and exercise freely. Nyssa still loves people and finds her greatest happiness in being with her Hooman. With so much intelligence and energy Nyssa has limitless potential to become your perfect lifelong companion. Her right family, is one that understands her and is ready to provide her with love, care and proper training – then she is your girl! To be considered for adoption, pls submit an application in advance.   Adoption fee: $650 Meet Bright — a gentle 5–6 month old ACD/Shepherd mix with a soft spirit, a sweet heart, and the makings of a truly devoted companion.   Bright weighs about 18–20 pounds and came to rescue with his sister Merry. Bright has been blossoming at his own pace — and watching that transformation has been one of the most rewarding parts of fostering him.   A Quiet, Sensitive Soul Learning to Shine   When Bright first arrived, he was so frightened that he clung to his foster for comfort, unsure of the world around him. Today, he has made tremendous progress. He now follows his foster gently from room to room, curls up beside her during the workday, and checks in with soft eyes to make sure he’s still close to his person. He’s a classic little velcro dog who enjoys companionship and feels most secure when he can keep his trusted human in sight. Bright isn’t a natural cuddler yet — he prefers to quietly settle next to you or rest at your feet — but he gladly melts in for head rubs and chin scratches once he feels safe. His sweetness is unmistakable.   Daily Routine & Good Manners   Bright starts his day early with a 6 a.m. potty trip in the backyard, then tucks back in for more sleep until around 8 a.m. He enjoys a couple of short walks each day, plus backyard potty breaks every few hours. He’s been improving steadily with housetraining and usually goes in the yard where he feels comfortable. He’s still working up the courage to potty on walks, but he’s trying hard and happily celebrates with a “puppy party” when he succeeds. He eats two small meals per day (½ cup AM and PM). Because he was initially scared around food, he often prefers to finish his meals when no one is watching — but he’s gaining confidence daily and now enjoys treats, training games, and chewing a cow’s ear while relaxing.   Bright is wonderfully polite: he doesn’t bark, doesn’t jump on furniture, waits patiently at doorways, and rides calmly in the car in his crate with his cushy liner. He sleeps quietly at night on his chosen cozy spot (currently a handmade felted purse he flattened into a self-made bed!).   Training & Emerging Playfulness   Bright LOVES training games. He proudly knows Touch, Find It, and Leave It, and responds to his name with enthusiasm. These little wins have been huge for his confidence. While toys are still a bit new and intimidating, he’s slowly exploring them — nibbling on tags, investigating Lambie, and watching with interest. Because he listens closely, wants to please, and is incredibly gentle, he will be a joy to continue training as he grows braver.   Out and About   Bright walks well on his harness, stays close, and doesn’t pull. He’s afraid of loud noises (leaf blowers, squeaky shoes, sudden sounds) and can be nervous when cars pass, but he recovers and keeps trying. He doesn’t react to other dogs — he simply watches calmly and keeps moving. He’s also gone on several weekend adventures, from outdoor breakfasts to strolls through downtown San Carlos and even to a knitting shop in San Jose. He stays close to his foster’s feet, quietly taking in the world without begging or fussing.   Why Bright Is So Special   Bright is the kind of dog who quietly wins your heart. He tries so hard to be good, listens beautifully, and has a sweetness that shines through even when he’s unsure. His pretty ACD-style spotting, his attentive nature, and his soft, expressive face make him unforgettable. As his foster says, “He just wants to do the right thing all the time.”     Bright is ready for a family who can help his confidence continue to grow and who will treasure the sweet, sensitive companion he is. Whoever adopts him is going to be very lucky.  December 14, 2025, 4:46 pm
