What we know: Originally adopted from CPR in 2023. Found as stray in June 2026, dropped at Aurora Animal Shelter with injured front leg. Microchip had been registered to multiple owners through different registries. Original owner claimed she was lost and never found two years ago, in 2024. The owner most recently registered in 2024 told the shelter he got her as a gift for his now-ex girlfriend and provided the ex girlfriend’s contact info. The shelter tried for five days to reach the girlfriend who never responded. Dog became the possession of Aurora and Aurora completed amputation of atrophied leg and transferred her back to CPR on June 23, 2026. Jenny is currently recovering from surgery on June 22, 2026.
From the foster: Jenny is a dream girl. After three years of being treated as disposable in what appears to be multiple homes, Jenny has thrived in her foster home while healing from leg amputation due to an unknown injury. She was already accustomed to walking on three legs when she was brought into the shelter as a stray, so the injury was likely not recent.
In her foster home, Jenny adores the two young children (3-5 years old) and rolls on her back for them to give belly rubs. She doesn't herd them and she even enjoys participating while they ride their bikes around the yard. There's an older dog, plus two ducks who also live in her foster home; she opts to lay with the other dog during nap-time, but she doesn't seek him out for comfort in general, so we think she would be fine with or without another dog in her home. She does herd the ducks, but very gently. Her foster mom, though, she looks at her like she hung the moon, and wants to be wherever she is. She is calm, and speaks to Jenny softly, which appears to be the path to Jenny's heart. She is so eager for affection from her foster mom and will jump up to stand against her first thing in the morning in order to get it.
Jenny is potty-trained and doesn't use a crate in her foster home, even when the humans leave. She loves to chase a ball but otherwise doesn't chew things she shouldn't. She's currently doing short walks on leash, which she's great at, and she should continue to work up her endurance for longer walks in order to manage her weight. Dogs with limb-loss are susceptible to early arthritis due to the stress on the remaining legs, so it's vital that she maintains a healthy weight.
Jenny's foster home doesn't have stairs, but she does well on their deck stairs. Jenny doesn't have any restrictions on stairs in her home, but if there are, they must be carpeted or she won't be able to use them safely. The rest of her home is fine to have hard floors, but it's clear she's much more stable with rugs available and she seeks them out.
Jenny is an absolute delight, and we're looking for nothing short of the best home for her. Since she's not rambunctious at all, she would do well with older people and/or young children in her home. A hyper dog would be a lot for her, so ideally none of those. A home where the humans are present a good amount of the time would be her ideal setting.
