After many months of patience, trust-building, and gentle care, she has discovered that humans aren't so bad after all! Today, Cocoa enjoys being petted and has blossomed into a shy but affectionate girl. While she may not be the first cat to greet you at the door, she has made incredible progress and continues to gain confidence every day. Cocoa is litter box trained and does well indoors, but she will need a patient adopter who understands that she may take time to adjust to a new environment. Meet Calypso 🐾 My name is Calypso, named after the Sea Nymph from Greek mythology. FROM RESCUER- Calypso was first discovered several years ago near the Port Tobacco Restaurant along the Port Tobacco River. Although she's been a familiar face in the area for quite some time, she has always lived outdoors and never appeared to belong to anyone. About a year ago, she had a litter of kittens outside my workplace. I tried to trap her and the kittens so she could be spayed and the babies could find loving homes—but on the very day I was ready to help, they disappeared. Then, in early February, Calypso returned—and she was pregnant again. After such a cold winter, I couldn't bear the thought of her giving birth outside in the freezing temperatures. Her belly was huge, she was constantly searching for food, and it was clear that time was running short. Thankfully, we were able to safely catch her before she delivered. Since then, Calypso has raised her kittens in a warm, safe environment and has successfully nursed and weaned them. She has also received full veterinary care, including vaccinations, spaying, and a microchip. The best surprise of all? Calypso is an incredibly sweet girl. She loves affection, enjoys being petted, and even welcomes belly rubs—which any cat lover knows is pretty rare! While she needed a little patience with litter box training at first, she is now 100% litter box trained. The original plan was to return Calypso to her outdoor home near the restaurant. However, after getting to know her, I truly believe she would thrive as an indoor companion in a loving home. Unfortunately, I can't keep her myself because she does not get along with my dogs. She will charge and attack them, though I suspect much of this behavior stemmed from her strong instinct to protect her kittens. It's possible that once she no longer feels the need to defend them, she may do better around dogs. Because she has been so focused on caring for her babies, I honestly can't say how she would do with other adult cats. What I do know is that Calypso deserves so much more than life on the streets. After years of surviving on her own and raising multiple litters outdoors, she's finally had a chance to experience safety, comfort, and love.
