She's still a young puppy with plenty of growing, learning, and discovering ahead of her. At six months old, CW is entering an important stage of puppyhood. She's developing her adult personality, learning household expectations, and figuring out how the world works. Her future family will have the wonderful opportunity—and responsibility—of helping shape the dog she becomes. CW is good with other dogs and children, while her compatibility with cats is currently unknown. As a Chiweenie, CW may inherit characteristics from both of her breeds. Chihuahuas are often affectionate, alert, intelligent, lively, and strongly attached to their people. Dachshunds may be curious, playful, clever, affectionate, and full of personality. Together, this can make for a little dog with a big personality, an inquisitive mind, and a strong desire to be involved with her family. Training, Adjustment & What to Expect At six months old, CW is still very much a puppy. Her adopter should be prepared to continue teaching her all the skills she'll need as an adult dog. Rescue dogs may arrive with basic training at best, so her family should be ready to work on: House training Leash manners Basic commands Recall Appropriate chewing Calm greetings Household boundaries Positive socialization Building confidence and independence Training should always be patient, consistent, and based on positive reinforcement. Because CW is a small Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, her family should also be mindful of her physical safety. Avoid unnecessary jumping from high furniture, rough handling, or play that could result in injury. Ramps or steps may be helpful for furniture access, particularly if she develops the longer body shape associated with Dachshunds. Her future family should continue providing routine veterinary wellness exams, recommended vaccine boosters, flea/tick/heartworm and parasite prevention, dental care, quality nutrition, healthy weight management, grooming and nail care, and veterinary treatment whenever needed. Because she is a small dog, dental health and healthy weight management will be particularly important. If she develops a longer Dachshund-like body, maintaining a lean, healthy weight and limiting excessive jumping can also help reduce unnecessary strain on her back and joints.
