Story
My name is Holly and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m around 3 years old and came to my foster home here in Dorchester, IA, after I was found living under a shed in MO trying to survive and care for my puppy. I’m a smart and savvy girl. I’m shy at first, but very curious. Once I get to know you, I’ll become a goofy love-bug, especially if you scritch and pet me under my chin and neck. You’ll like petting me - my fur is super soft! I’m a good girl in my foster home. I’m potty trained and stay quiet when my foster family has to leave the house. I’m also a pretty typical Shiba – I’m a ninja-level escape-artist, especially if I get spooked by an unexpected noise or sudden movement. I mean, you would be too if you’d been surviving on the mean streets like I had! But I love being outside. My forever family will need to be careful to guard against escapes. I can jump or climb a fence if needed, so she recommends leash walks (rather than a fenced yard, unless the fence is very secure, tall and climb-proof). I get along well with other dogs and love to play, but if a dog isn’t interested, I’ll greet them and move on. I’ve met some little human kids and I’m pretty unsure and will bark if they squeal or scream, so my forever home probably shouldn’t have really little ones. I tend to match kids’ energy - if they are hyper, I’ll get excited too, but if they’re calm, then I’ll be calm. I’m curious about cats and other small pets – I might want to play with them, if they’ll let me. I tested positive for heartworm disease after being out on my own, and have been getting treatment. It’s kind-of a drag – it takes a long time and I have to stay calm and quiet and can’t rough house with the other dogs. But foster mom says that it’s much better to get rid of any heartworms now so I can live a long and healthy live. Otherwise, I’m a healthy girl – spayed and vaccinated – weighing around 20 lbs. If you live in the Midwest and are interested in a pretty, fluffy, smart and sweet girlie like me, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home environment so they can tell if we’ll be a good match. Once approved, SIRA will introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet.

Story
I'm looking to find a great second and hopefully final home for two very sweet labradoodle litter mate sisters, whose names are Biscuit (tan/white) and Penny (black). Ideally, the adoption will include both dogs, which I know is a big commitment, but I can't stand the idea of separating them now after they've grown up their whole lives together. I originally acquired Biscuit and Penny in April of 2019, under very different life circumstances. They have been cared for at the Rock Island Animal Hospital since that time, and they are both spayed and current on all vaccines, preventives, etc. They have excellent temperaments around people and other dogs. As it stands today, I'm in a different chapter of my life, and I have to be away from home and travel quite a bit for work, so Biscuit and Penny are home alone or need to be boarded. These two dogs have a lot of love and life yet to give to a new owner or family. I'm not in any hurry to re-home, but it is something I would like to do.

Story
“You Think I Don't Know Ball?” Meet Emma! At 6 years old, Emma the Pit Bull mix has mastered the art of ball. Fetch? She invented it. Catch? She’s a pro. Tug? Only if you can keep up! With her adorable ears perked and eyes locked in, Emma takes her playtime very seriously - and she wouldn’t have it any other way. But don’t let her athletic skills fool you - Emma’s also a total sweetheart who loves spending time with her favorite people. She’s loyal, affectionate, and will happily snuggle up after she’s proven, once again, that yes… she does know ball. Emma is looking for an experienced adopter who understands her zest for life and can continue her training journey. She’ll need to be the only pet in her home so she can soak up all the love and attention she deserves. She’s also part of our Paws Forward Program, which means her adopter will receive 3 free training sessions with Janette from Kind K9s to help Emma keep shining both on and off the field. If you’re ready for a loyal teammate, a goofy best friend, and a champion ball player, Emma is ready to play ball… forever. Can't adopt? Please share!

Story
Meet Della, a beautiful 4 year old husky pit bull mix who is patiently waiting for her fresh start this spring. 💛 While she can be a bit shy at first, Della truly shines with a gentle, understanding approach. Once she feels comfortable, she reveals her affectionate, cuddly nature and love for outdoor adventures and belly rubs. Della would thrive with a dog-savvy adopter who can provide the guidance, patience, and active lifestyle she needs to continue building confidence. She is best suited for an adult-only home where she can be the only pet, allowing her to fully relax and form a strong bond with her person. Della’s story is especially meaningful to our shelter. She was deeply loved by longtime volunteer Brian T. Parkinson, who dedicated years to caring for our dogs. As shared in his obituary, “In keeping with his compassionate spirit, Brian’s final wish was to see Della, his favorite shelter dog, find a loving home.” Since his passing in May 2025, Della continues to wait for that special someone. This spring, we hope to honor Brian’s memory by helping Della find the loving home he wished for her. We invite you to visit, learn more about Della, and consider opening your heart and home to this deserving girl. 🐾
