Story
Athena is a 5-year-old Rat Terrier looking for her second chance at forever. She spent the first few years of her life in a puppy mill environment before being rescued and adopted through Buffalo Pug Rescue. After a year in a loving home, she was sadly returned to rescue due to the unforeseen decline of her adopter's health. Due to her body type, lovingly loyal & clever demeanor, and tendency to snuggle into blankets - we believe dachshund may be her secondary / mix breed.
Athena is potty trained, crate trained, and sleeps well through the night. She's playful, attentive, and loves being close to her people. She entertains herself with toys and chew bones when your lap isnt available. Athena enjoys exploring the yard with her foster siblings and crawling into their dog beds with them.
Like many puppy mill survivors, Athena bonds most strongly with women . Although she gladly takes chicken from her foster dad, she is generally is nervous around men. She'll need a patient family willing to let her build trust at her own pace. Once she feels safe, she's a loyal little companion who loves attention, affection, and long strolls through the neighborhood.
Athena is looking for a forever family that has a fully fenced backyard and will give her the love & security she deserves. Could that be you?
A love letter from Athena's foster mom:
Oh, Athena, how is it even possible to catalog and convey all of your wonderful qualities? Where do I even start?
You came into our home quiet, curious, and a bit unsure of your new surroundings. We compared you to a wallflower. Your gentle presence elevates the room, but doesn't entirely steal the show. And I worry that quality will have you overlooked by potential adopters. They'll see a shy girl in the corner, but they won't be able to see your obedience, your loyalty, your playfulness, or your incredibly disciplined potty habits.
At the adoption center, they won't get to see the way you've bloomed in your foster home. The happy dance you do for meals and treats. The playfulness you display around dogs you trust. The way you shake toys for your own amusement or happily chew on a bone to pass the time. The way you gently sneak into an already occupied dog bed and cuddle up with the other pups.
They won't see the way you excitedly burrow under my arm on the couch or sleep belly-up in my lap while I'm reading a good book. They'll see "scared," while I experience "sacred."
You are an absolute gem. One of the best-behaved and best-mannered dogs I've had the privilege of fostering.
Yes, we are searching for your true forever home, but there is absolutely no rush. Your presence is a blessing in our home, and we won't settle for anything less than the very best when we choose your family.
