Story
Ruby Rose, a spirited super-senior of a shih tzu, strutted into Muttville with a confident attitude and a clear preference for the finer things in life (maybe that’s how she got her name? You can tell she’d be a stunner with some ruby jewels). This little lady has a lovely sable coat and very expressive fuzzy ears that elevate even her most mundane expressions into a work of art. As you’d expect from such a classy broad, Ruby is a little selective as to what dogs she’ll allow in her company, and she likes to be approached by humans with gentle manners. Ruby Rose would like to be the queen of her own castle, and she’d love it if that castle could be with you! If you’re looking for a demure little princess to live with you, come meet Ruby Rose today! Here's some notes from her foster: Ruby Rose is a good girl. Sometimes, she barks with excitement to go outside the house to the dog run. Rudy Rose does well on leash and rides on the elevator with no problem. As well as stairs. She doesn’t not have any limitations. She “ gallups” with excitement as her initial walk and continue to look back to make sure the human is following behind and then gallup again. She doesn’t pull or tug at the leash. Ruby needs moderate exercise outdoors; especially with a backyard to run around and jump. Ruby Rose knows the command Sit. Rudy Rose is house-trained. She can be left alone for up to 8 hours in the house BUT you have to make sure Ruby Rose has used the potty before you leave for work and immediately use the potty upon your return. While you are away, Ruby Rose will be sleeping in the dog bed. We have a quiet, mellow home with just my husband and me, my 45 lb dog, and our two senior cats. Our neighborhood is peaceful with minimal foot traffic or noise. Not many visitors came during her stay, which helped her settle in. She got along well with my dog. They coexisted peacefully. Walked side by side, sniffed together, and even napped near each other. There was no resource guarding — they ate meals near each other without issue. She also did great with my brothers dog— was respectful and calm. She's fine with other dogs and people when we walk past them on the sidewalk, generally ignoring them. I took her to a fenced-in dog park today to see how she would do. She liked to sniff everything, not interacting much with the other dogs or people. She doesn't like when dogs get too close to her and she will let them know. She also has boundaries when people she doesn't know approach her to pet her. She’s a very special dog who blossoms with patience and a calm, respectful environment.

I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereLouie is the perfect pooch for a quiet and calm household looking for a quirky and cute senior! Louie is great (independent) with both cats and dogs, so would be fine in a home as the only pet or with other low energy friends. Since he can’t see perfectly, he may get startled with a more high energy roomie! For this reason he would do best in a home without kids.  Louie’s perfect day would involve lots of time with his people getting back scratches, cruising around outside, treats, and lots of snoring naps on a comfy dog bed! He had a rough start to life and will need medication 4x per day for his epilepsy, though he takes meds in pill pockets like a champ! He is on his way to being fully potty trained. He will need regular grooming but got glowing reviews from his prior groomers!  Do you have the perfect couch he has been looking for? Story
**Rehoming Penelope: A Loving Companion in Need of Care** Meet Penelope, a 12-year-old dog with a heart full of love and a spirit that refuses to slow down. She’s a wonderful companion who thrives in the great outdoors, whether it’s playing at the beach or frolicking in the snow. Despite her age, Penelope is still active and spunky, bringing joy to everyone she meets. However, life has taken a challenging turn for me. This situation has made it increasingly difficult for me to provide Penelope with the care she truly deserves. Penelope is currently suffering from severe dental disease, which is causing her significant pain. She is on antibiotics and pain medication prescribed by the vet, but I am unable to afford the necessary dental procedure to alleviate her suffering. It breaks my heart to see her in pain, and I want nothing more than for her to receive the love and medical care she deserves.

Story
Fern – The Gentle Snugglebug Meet Fern, the soft-hearted sweetheart of the bunch. We believe she’s a Shih Tzu–Brussels Griffon mix, which explains her low-shedding coat and ridiculously cute Muppet face. At 9 weeks old and about 5.5 pounds, Fern is thriving in her Bay Area foster home and expected to grow into a perfect medium-sized mutt—about 14–20 lbs full grown. Fern is the calmest of her litter and would spend all day cuddled in your arms if you’d let her. She’s a sensitive girl who craves affection and security. Like all her siblings, Fern has no training yet and is looking for an adopter who is home most of the day (no more than 4 hours gone) and ready to commit to the socialization and structure every puppy needs. She’s fantastic with kids, dogs, and even cats. Fern’s ideal home includes a backyard, another calm and confident dog, and someone who will help her blossom through gentle guidance and daily engagement. Story
Meet Jagger! This 4-year-old, 17-pound heartthrob is as handsome as he is sweet — and best of all, he’s a non-shedding pup who’ll need regular grooming to keep his adorable looks in check. Our best guess is he’s a Shih Tzu mix, possibly with a touch of Schnauzer or Yorkie. Jagger came to us as a stray from the Central Valley, and while we believe he was loved at some point, sadly no one came to claim him. But he’s not looking back — he’s now thriving in foster care here in the Bay Area and is ready for his forever family. He’s that perfect medium size, with a laid-back and friendly personality that makes him a total joy to be around. He’s great with dogs, cats, and kids, and would make an amazing companion for almost any home. Jagger loves car rides, sunbathing, curling up on a lap, and chewing on bones. He’s doing great with crate and house training, and he’d love to be your new walking buddy. Jagger is an all-around good boy who’s ready to bring love and warmth into your life — help us find him the home he truly deserves. Personality traits Affectionate, Quiet, Loyal, Smart, Gentle, Curious, Dignified, Independent, Easy Going

Story
Meet Necktie, the most dapper gentleman in town! This sweet boy is always chilling, taking life one belly rub at a time. He’s got a heart full of love and a nose that always knows where the treats are! Necktie is the perfect mix of friendly and easygoing, he gets along just fine with other dogs and absolutely adores his human friends. Whether he’s lounging by your side or following you around for snacks, he’s just happy to be part of the fun! Looking for a lovable, treat-motivated best friend? Necktie is ready to tie himself to your heart forever! Here's some notes from his foster: Necktie is such a sweet, happy, good boy. I can't say enough good things about him. The first thing you need to know about Necktie is that this guy loves to eat! Necktie is basically a 2 in 1 Hoover/floor cleaning system. Not a single crumb will escape Necktie in his quest to give you sparkling clean floors (and maybe coffee tables too, watch out!) Necktie can hold his potty overnight. He loves short walks. Sniffing is his favorite and he likes to stick close right beside you. He doesn’t have issues being left alone so I think he would be fine napping at home if you had a typical 9-5 schedule. He is a very quiet dog and we have hardy heard a peep out of him. He is most happy to curl up with you on the couch and snuggle. Necktie does have both visual and hearing impairment. He can only see and hear a little bit, but I can tell that this does not stop him at all. Necktie is very smart and had our whole apartment mapped out in no time. He remembers where we put all the dog stairs to get onto the couch and bed. He even tries (and fails) to chase our cat. Necktie navigates the world with his other senses, and he is plenty confident to run and jump around once he knows his surroundings. He will also do stairs as long and you guide him the first few times. There are so many lovable qualities that Necktie does. When he is lying down he folds he paws up underneath himself like a cat-loaf. Since he is blind/deaf he tends to run around with his nose high up in the air when he is expecting a snack (for better smell reception). He also loves to role around on rugs and carpet to get full body scratchies. Necktie also loves brushing and will immediately flop over as soon as the brushing starts to give you better belly access. He will even play what I call “bitey hands” by chasing your hands or a toy around on the floor. His legs and paws are so chubby and fluffy. You can’t help love him! Necktie is a very sweet cuddly boy who deserves to live the good life after his time as a stray. So many families out there would be lucky to have him!

Story
Macie is a sweet, silly girl who is about 8 years old and 18 pounds.  She loves her foster mom’s dogs and is sweet to her cat. She was closed down and ill when we pulled her from the shelter. Every day her personality is blooming a bit more. She is a real homebody and will walk around the block, but would rather stay home and hang out.  She is vaccinated, chipped and spayed and has had a recent dental. Macie is a special needs dog. She needs to take medication morning and evening for her heart murmur and arthritis. She also has ointment for dry eye. Macie was a stray so we don't know how she got to this state, whether an accident or genetics, but she readily takes her meds in pill pockets and she is a wonderful companion. Her medications and  supplements cost about $100 per month and she is a dog that will need regular grooming. Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial veterinary and other expenses in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, we request a tax-deductible donation for each adoption. The suggested donation for Macie is $300. If you are interested in adopting Macie, please complete our online adoption application at https://www.gratefuldogsrescue.org/adoption-process/ . One of our volunteers will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the SF Bay Area. June 7, 2025, 3:27 pm
