Story
Hi, I’m Ruby! I am a 7 year old Chihuahua Dachshund mix, at least that’s what the kind
people at Border Tails tell me. I feel so happy, always up for a walk through the
neighborhood. I LOVE walking! My foster mom says that I am a fantastic walking buddy
because although I do enjoy an occasional sniff, I mostly enjoy moving my body, nose to
the ground, intent on getting my steps in. I actually enjoy 3, 4, 5, walks per day. My legs are
kinda low to the ground so I can’t go long distances, but 20-30 minutes of activity at a time
is my ideal window. Sometimes I walk at a good clip, and sometimes I walk slowly. I also
love meandering through grassy fields more leisurely, nose to the ground, enjoying the
scents of nature. I walk right next to my foster mom, I don’t pull on the leash, I have no
interest in fire hydrants, I sometimes like lampposts, and tree roots are very interesting.
My foster mom says that I am a natural beauty with very silky, super shiny black fur with
well placed spots of gold. I have soulful brown eyes that will melt into yours. When you pet
me, my whole body relaxes.
I’ve been alone for a long time now, having started my homeless journey in California and
then being flown to Chicago where the nice Border Tails folks immediately saw how special
I am. My foster mom says that I am a combination of slow to warm up, happy, loyal, and
cheerful. My tail wags all the time! Going for a walk? Tail wags! Following my person? Tail
wags! Waking up and seeing my person? Tail wags! Meal time? Tail wags! Car ride? Tail
wags! Massages and gentle petting? Tail wags! Bath time? Tail wags! Soft doggie beds,
blankets, and cushions? Tail wags! My human talking to me? Tail wags! Meeting new
humans? Tail wags! Sitting next to my human? Tail wags!
What doesn’t make my tail wag? Cats. I do not like cats. Or squirrels. Hold tightly to my
leash because I will chase squirrels until they run up a tree and hide from my prowess. I
haven’t lived with another dog so when I see them on the street, I either ignore them or bark
at them. I don’t like chaos or loud noises. But surprisingly, rain and thunder and
lightening don’t bother me at all.
It’s true that I am slow to warm up. I like to be given the opportunity to know that humans
are safe and kind and gentle. Once I like you, I really like you! I will follow you from room to
room. I will lay on the floor on a comfy cushion right next to you while you work or watch tv.
My ideal home will have multiple cushions, blankets, and doggie beds strategically placed
for me to lounge in. When you leave me by myself, and I may bark for a few minutes or not,
but as long as you give me some love and let me know that you are coming back, I settle
into my cozy bed and sleep. I like having a pee pad available when I am left alone. I am
perfectly potty trained but will use the pee pad when my human isn’t home to take me
outside.
Going up and down stairs is hard and scary for me so I kindly request that you carry me up
and down steps. I can climb into the car on my own if it’s low to the ground, but I prefer to
be gently placed into my dog seat. I get excited for car rides! While I am in the car, I mostly
lay down and either close my eyes or look at my human. Not too much interest in looking
out the window. Not interested in standing up in the car. Definitely not interested in having
my head out the window. I like my own seat, and the joy of the adventure with my human.
For me, even a trip to the gas station to put gas in the car is fun. I’m so easy to please cuz
the 3 things I want to do every day are: go for walks, be with my human, and sleep.
Before being rescued, I had poor nutrition and packed on some extra LBS’s. But now my
foster mom feeds me high quality dog food. Of course I love treats, but what really has
made the difference for me is having healthy food on a regular schedule. I have a happy
belly all day long fueling my energy levels and nutrition needs. Gone are the days of bad
food and a sedentary lifestyle. My weight is trending in a good direction, and I am looking
for someone who will continue to nurture my healthy lifestyle so that my body can
determine the weight that is just right for me.
I have been waiting for my forever home with my forever people since I lived in California. I
don’t know why I have been overlooked for so long. Maybe people think that 7 years old is
too old, but it’s definitely not too old to me! I have so many years of happy moments yet to
explore, and I am excited about that. I’m such a good girl. My foster mom says that I am
perfect just the way I am and that having me makes every day even brighter and cozier and
more fun. In fact, she says that I am the easiest, happiest dog she has ever known. If you
are looking for a quiet, sweet, loyal companion who makes her human the center of her
world, then I am your girl. Please come meet me!
