Story
Hi there! Rex is my name and adventure is my game! At 8 years old, I know how to be in a house, relax on the couch, ask for treats, and sit like a good boy. I get along well with my canine foster siblings who are just my size. I especially like to roam and romp in the yard with my Chihuahua foster sister. My absolute favorite pastimes are to follow my foster mom around like her little shadow and to sit in the kitchen and ask for treats. I have been known to play with stuffed animals twice my size, to carry around my chew stick like it's going out of style, and to join in all the barking when there are sounds at the front door. All this activity sometimes tuckers me out, and I will have to curl up on the couch next to my favorite person. Like any shelter pup, it does take me a little while to adjust to a new home and new people. I am a communicative little guy, though I am not always sure how to ask for what I want. Sometimes the best way I know how is to give you my puppy dog eyes, put my paws up on you, let out a little grumble, or maybe a bark or two. One thing is for sure, though-- once I trust you and decide that you are my person, I want to be with you all the time! It makes me sad to see you leave the house and I would do best with somebody who is home more often than not. And speaking of home-- I would be happiest with people and one or more other small dogs. I might possibly be your one and only pup if you are home all of the time. However, I must be in a feline-free zone. Cats are not my style! One more thing. As I get to know my new family, I will need some help knowing where the back door is. Keeping me on a schedule and coming outside to spend time with me will be a great way for us to bond! Plus you will get to see me wag my cute little tail at the happiness of being outdoors! I'm just the right blend of spunk and chill and I can't wait to meet you! Just care for me and be patient with me, and I will reward you with my friendship. Please contact Border Tails Rescue rescue if you can give me a loving forever home! Love, Rex

Story
Meet Wiley: A Little Coyote with a Whole Lot of Love to Give When Wiley first arrived at his foster home, he was known as Spotty. But his foster family quickly noticed something: he didn’t seem to recognize or respond to his name. With his expressive features and resemblance to Wile E. Coyote (minus the fur color, of course), they decided to try calling him Wiley. And wouldn’t you know it? He caught on almost immediately. Sometimes a fresh start begins with something as simple as a new name. Wiley is an affectionate, attentive, and incredibly loving dog with so much to offer the right family. He’s a genuine cuddle bug who loves being close to his people. During his time in foster care, he formed a sweet bond with his toddler foster brother and enjoyed following him around the house. He’s also attentive on walks and responds well to redirection. But like many dogs, Wiley has some challenges that deserve understanding, patience, and the right environment. During his time with his foster family, they noticed that Wiley displayed resource guarding behaviors around food, treats, and chew toys. Because Wiley arrived underweight, his foster family initially wondered whether food insecurity might be contributing to these behaviors. They also discovered that Wiley responds well to positive reinforcement and redirection using high-value treats, especially freeze-dried salmon bites. He enjoys having a quiet, designated space to chew in his kennel, where he can relax without worrying about someone approaching his belongings. As Wiley settled into his foster home, his family noticed that his resource guarding extended to certain children’s toys, particularly Little People figures, small cars, and pretend food. Although Wiley was affectionate toward his toddler foster brother, his foster family recognized that managing these behaviors around a young child would be challenging. Out of love and concern for both Wiley and their son, they made the difficult decision to return him to the shelter. And that’s an important part of Wiley’s story: he isn’t a bad dog. He’s a loving dog who needs a home better suited to his needs. Wiley’s ideal family will be patient, understanding, and committed to helping him build confidence and feel secure. He would do best in a home without young children, with adults who understand canine body language, respect his boundaries, and are willing to work consistently with a qualified, reward-based trainer to address his resource guarding. What makes Wiley special is how much he wants to connect with his people. He’s attentive, affectionate, responsive to guidance, and eager to please. We understand that hearing the words resource guarding might make some potential adopters hesitant. And that’s okay. It’s important to understand what you’re signing up for when welcoming any dog into your family. Resource guarding is a behavior that needs to be taken seriously, but it doesn’t define everything about Wiley or erase the wonderful qualities he has shown. With the right environment, thoughtful management, consistent training, and a family willing to meet him where he is, Wiley has the potential to become a deeply loved companion. Wiley doesn’t need a perfect family. He needs the right one. Someone who sees his affectionate heart, understands his challenges, and is willing to give him the patience, structure, and security he deserves. And in return? You’ll have one very special little coyote who loves being close to his people. Note: Wiley Spotty has an additional week of bandage care before suture removal from a bite wound sustained and should be fully suture-free at the beginning of November.
