Meet Cici, Eumy’s tiny little sister and the smallest of all 12 siblings. At 2 months old, she weighs just 2.5 lbs — but this teeny girl has an enormous amount of love to give. Cici and her 11 siblings were found tucked into the rocks of a beach in Puerto Rico, trapped inside a little beach cave with the tide coming in. Rescuers climbed down into the rocks and pulled the babies out one by one before the water could reach them. Cici was the littlest of them all. And this girl is an absolute human lover. Cici loves, loves, LOVES people and would happily spend her entire day being carried around in someone’s arms. She is incredibly sweet, cuddly, affectionate, and just wants to be as close to her humans as physically possible. If there is an available lap, Cici plans on being in it. Based on her size now, our vet’s best guess is that Cici will stay under 25 lbs fully grown, but with rescue puppies, adult size is always a bit of a mystery! Cici is currently in Puerto Rico and is already on the docket to head stateside to a foster home — unless her forever family finds her first! Cici was almost washed away before her life had even begun. Now all this tiny girl wants is exactly what she loves most: a human to hold her close and never let her go.

Cash is a senior, curmudgeonly Chihuahua mix seeking new roommates with whom he can spend his golden years. He is estimated to be at least 10 years old and came to us a whopping 21 pounds on legs and a frame built to carry a weight of 11-14 pounds comfortably. His large, expressive eyes tell the story of a little pup who may not have had the easiest time of it the past couple of years. Cash was rescued from an open-intake, overburdened animal control facility in Kentucky, and he was a pitiful, heartbreaking mess. Almost every single toenail was overgrown and curling back into his feet and paw pads, creating large painful sores. The sores, coupled with his obese frame and severely arthritic knees, made walking very difficult and painful for him. Any small amount of physical exertion made breathing difficult, and he was also suffering from hair loss on his back end and severe dental disease. In short, he was an uncomfortable, miserable little fella. Cash has been in the care of Pal's Place for several weeks now. He's already lost 6 pounds, had his hair loss treated (flea allergy), was neutered, and had his infected teeth thoroughly cleaned and scaled with several extractions. The newfound pep in his step and the little spark now seen in his eyes is evidence he's much more comfortable and feeling better physically. Emotionally, he's also showing promising signs and becoming more trusting of his foster human and less reactive. Cash was not the easiest dude to get along with when he first arrived. He was scared, distrustful, and defensive with his foster mom, and understandably so. He's a resiliant, brave, and determined little old man, though, with the grit of a German Shepherd and the heart of a Great Dane, and every day, he gets a little more comfortable and trusting. We are so proud of the strides he's already made. Just a few short weeks after his rescue, he's managed to sneak in some kisses, affection, and engagement between his hunkering down and retreating to his safe space (his kennel) for long periods. He's also graced his foster mom with some smiles, play bows, tail wags, butt wiggles, and brief moments of silliness. He's still quite suspicious of his foster mom most of the day and is still learning to trust and feel safe. These minor signs are hugely encouraging, however, and we look forward to seeing more of Cash's true personality shine as he begins to feel more calm, comfortable, loved, and secure. We really can't blame the little dude for being wary of strangers and sometimes defensive and temperamental with humans he's not very familiar with. Our hearts break for the neglect he's been suffering, but we are committed to finding Cash the most wonderful, patient, and loving home. We seek understanding, patient, loving, dog savvy guardians for him. Guardians who are prepared to give Cash all the time he needs to acclimate to a new environment, respect his boundaries and need for space sometimes, and understand that Cash's trust and affection must be earned, not assumed. Most importantly, we seek humans who are eager and committed to providing Cash the safe, comfortable, happy life he's always deserved but most likely never lived and to have him experience the feeling of unconditional love of guardians who have no expectations of him other than him now living his best life. The emotional and mental healing Cash will have to do after his ordeal will be a much longer, challenging period than his physical healing. Still, he's undoubtedly worth it, and nothing will compare to the feeling of fulfillment, gratitude, and love once Cash's respect, trust, and love are earned and returned tenfold. While slow to trust people, Cash is fantastic with other dogs of all sizes and ages and is much more comfortable and relaxed in the company of his own species at this time. Because of this, we feel Cash should go to a home with at least one other dog to provide comfort, moral support, confidence, and behavior modeling as Cash enters this next phase of his life. We don't think Cash ever experienced stairs or had to navigate them in his previous life and needed to be carried up and down when he first came to us. He will now walk up stairs slowly and cautiously but is not yet comfortable going down on his own and needs to be carried. He's been recently neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He's also had a senior blood panel completed, as well as dental cleaning and extractions. His knees are quite arthritic, but he's been started on joint supplements and continuation of his diet/weight loss plan, and light exercise will help him lead a more comfortable life in his senior years. Hugs and Kisses are a beautiful mom-and-daughter duo whose bond is as strong as their names suggest. These two soulful, gentle girls have been let down in the past, but together they’ve found comfort in one another and are now hoping to find a family who will welcome them both into their hearts. They are quiet, affectionate, and happiest when cuddled up close, whether with each other or snuggled into a loving lap. Gadget is being fostered in NY, and is currently on medical hold.Gadget is a very sweet little fellow who has been with his foster family since June. Not long after arriving, he developed some concerning symptoms such as vocalizing (sometimes seemingly random), a severe head tilt and circling to the left, nystagmus (rapid eye movement side to side), and hypermetria (high stepping). Shortly after that, he started knuckling in both legs on the right side.His vet immediately referred him to a neurologist, and luckily, we were able to get in quickly. Infectious encephalitis has been ruled out via bloodwork, but without an MRI and spinal tap, we won't have a definitive diagnosis. Likely possibilities are autoimmune encephalitis, neoplasia, and hydrocephalus. Two areas of his brain are affected (left forebrain, right caudal fossa).Gadget was put on a high dose of prednisone, along with gabapentin and amantadine. He's made wonderful progress and many of his symptoms have quieted down. His head tilt has completely disappeared. Given this reaction to treatment, it's more likely that he has an autoimmune encephalitis, but again, we can't say for certain.The good news is that he's doing so well his neurologist feels comfortable tapering down his prednisone, and we've just begun to do so. Hopefully, he maintains all of the progress he's made, but at the lower steroid dose. If all goes well, we will try lowering his prednisone dose even further next month.Gadget requires regular bloodwork and urine tests every two or three months, at a minimum, to be sure he's able to handle the prednisone (long term use can result in unwanted side effects such as diabetes, liver, or kidney disease, among others), and that nothing else is going on. We also check in with his neurologist regularly via phone appointments.Gadget also has dental disease and seborrhea. These issues are not related to his neurological issues, but the prednisone has caused thin skin and an increase in his flaking. Regular medicated baths should help with his seborrhea, but unfortunately, dental surgery is not an option.Even with his neurological issues, Gadget is a very sweet boy who tries so hard to be good! He doesn't like to be startled or rushed, and it helps to work in "slow motion" with him. For example, we say "touch" before touching him and "pick up" before picking him up. Routines are very important to him.Gadget is fine with the other dogs in his foster home, and over time, has felt comfortable venturing throughout the home by himself. After three months, he's also now able to be in his small fenced in yard without a harness and leash so that he can wander as he pleases, but he is never unsupervised in the yard.Gadget will remain on medical hold for at least the next few months as his medications are adjusted and his responses to these adjustments are evaluated. Our biggest hope, of course, is that he's able to be comfortable and happy and fairly symptom free on the lowest dose possible for him.When Gadget is ready for adoption, he will need a very patient owner who accepts him for the sweet little pup he is. He will never be without his neurological issues, but the love in his heart shines through very clearly! You will be his world and he will love you with all of his little heart.As with any dog, we do not know what the future holds for Gadget and whether his symptoms will return or worsen.
