He’s friendly with people, dogs, AND cats, making him the ultimate social butterfly (minus the wings… although, with his charm, he might as well fly).     Looking for a buddy who’s sweet as can be, adores life, and is ready to love you unconditionally? Then Merle is your guy. Don’t wait — apply today and scoop up this cutie before someone else does. Your new pet will require a refresher in house-training. K-9 Lifesavers strongly recommends all new adopters enroll their new pet into obedience training. This provides for an easier transition into a new home, ensures the dog remains well socialized, and helps form a bond between the dog and the new family.    Adoption fees cover basic vetting, rabies (if puppy is old enough), distemper/parvo vaccinations, deworming, monthly heartworm prevention while in our care (if old enough), monthly flea/tick prevention while in our care, and transport costs. K-9 Lifesavers will also cover the cost of spay/neuter at our partner vet at 6 months of age or reimburse adopter for up to the amount of our partner vet cost should you choose to spay/neuter at your own vet.Foster Program:    Foster homes provide for the temporary care of a rescue until the dog is placed into a loving, forever home.  For more information on becoming a foster parent, and our Foster Program, visit http://www.k-9lifesavers.org/foster/ or email our Foster Coordinator at foster@k-9lifesavers.orgSPONSOR ME! Help Save Lives!    Make a tax-deductible donation today and help save a life. Story
8 years old, 20 pounds Personality: energetic, snuggler, independent, loyal, smart, mischievous, outgoing, affectionate, and goofy/funny. Gimlet is a truly special terrier — bright, funny, and deeply connected to his people. He loves meeting new humans and warms up quickly, often leaning in for snuggles and happily bringing over toys to invite play. He’s also a wonderful companion who rarely barks. At home, he’s content and easy to live with: He’s house trained and trusted uncrated, opting to relax on his dog bed when left alone. He also enjoys listening to music and looking out the window, and he especially enjoys walks in wooded areas. When he’s feeling a bit mischievous, he has the adorable habit of stealing a shoe to snuggle with like it’s a teddy bear. What really sets Gimlet apart is his intelligence. He’s highly food motivated and knows a long and growing list of words, including sit, stay, wait, touch, paw, and lie down. He thrives on enrichment like treat puzzles and interactive games, and he even served as a game tester for CleverPet — he’s that quick to learn. He had a blast in agility class, but he’s not a dog-park guy and prefers quieter outings. In the right adults-only home, where he can be the only dog and have a calm, consistent routine, Gimlet will be an incredibly loyal, affectionate, and entertaining best friend. Does smart Gimlet sound like the right fit for your home? Apply today to meet Gimlet! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is a foster-based rescue in Washington, DC. Story
Meet Velma. This young momma dog and her three puppies were found abandoned on Kelly Mountain in Logan County, WV, discovered by a group of hunters far from any homes. When the hunters stopped, the dogs immediately approached them, friendly and social, leading us to believe Velma likely once had a home and that she and her puppies were intentionally left behind. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and took the little family into her home until rescue help could be found. Because of her compassion and quick action, Velma and her pups are now safe and have settled into their local foster homes. Velma has proven to be a sweet, affectionate pup who is great with other dogs and good with kids, and has been fostered with both. She's still young-dog jumpy, so kids out of the toddler stage are probably best, but this is correctable behavior. She’s currently living as an only dog with her foster mom, Norie, soaking up all the attention. Velma recently visited the vet to get up to date on vaccinations and diagnostics and was given a clean bill of health as a young, healthy adolescent pup. Norie shared this update: “The vet visit went well. Velma rides well in the car and was great with the staff, a very good patient. She’s friendly with everyone we’ve met and really enjoys other dogs. She’s housetrained and hasn’t had a single accident in my house. She sleeps peacefully in a crate next to my bed at night. She’s OK on leash but needs more practice. She can get excited and a bit jumpy when she wants to meet another dog. Once she meets them, she does well, though not all dogs want to engage. Velma has some spunk and loves to play and chase balls, but she also knows how to settle down inside.I taught her sit in one day, so she’s very smart. She loves cuddling on the couch. Very affectionate. Can’t get enough of going outside and loves to go for walks." This sweet, more submissive girl will make a wonderful family dog or new pack member. She’s still a young pup who needs to learn her basic commands and fine-tune her leash skills, but her social skills and house manners are already excellent. Apply today! Story
Meet Tilly &#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143 This sweet girl was purchased from a breeder to hunt squirrels, but despite her Mountain Feist lineage, she WASN’T a natural hunter with a strong prey drive. When she wouldn’t bark at treed squirrels, she was deemed unfit for hunting.  She spent her early life as a hunter’s dog, living in an outdoor kennel with concrete floors and a wooden box for shelter, never knowing the comfort of a home or what it meant to be part of a family. Thankfully, one of our volunteers knew the hunter and stepped in to secure Tilly’s safety. In just one month, Tilly’s world has completely transformed. She’s now thriving in a warm foster home with Hannah and her two dogs, where she’s embraced life as part of a pack. She integrated easily, follows her foster siblings everywhere, and learns by watching them. In the beginning, she was a bit protective of her crate space, likely a remnant from her past life. As she’s settled in and learned she’s safe, she’s let go of behaviors tied to her past life outside. Tilly was shy at first, but she’s truly blossomed. She now seeks out affection, follows her foster mom around, and has been wonderful with guests—sweet, friendly, and comfortable meeting new people. Though indoor life was brand new (mirrors, TVs, and dishwashers were scary at first), she’s made huge strides in confidence. She now happily snuggles on the couch, sleeps under the covers, gives the sweetest kisses, and lives for head scratches. Tilly has a medium energy level. She enjoys running around the yard but is laid-back and calm in the house. She is crate-trained, and her crate is her safe space. She’s making good progress with potty training; she knows she’s supposed to go outside, but is still learning how to signal her foster mom. Cold weather has made things a bit more challenging for many dogs… She’s also doing well on leash; she may pull initially, but she corrects quickly. Tilly has a pretty low prey drive; she will watch squirrels closely, but doesn’t try to chase. She’s just aware.  Tilly is discovering what it means to feel safe, included, and loved—and she’s blossoming more every day. We want to bring Tilly to the DC metro on our next transport (2/21). We need a foster or adopter to welcome her. Open to foster-to-adopt for the right family fit.  BREED ESTIMATE: Mountain Feist GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  23 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 2 years old COAT TYPE: Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425.00 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed, microchipped LOCATION: Charlotte, NC - Coming to DC metro 2/21   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Luna! This baby hippo is a sweetheart and bsolutely adorable. Luna has returned to Miri's Haven after more than a year in her adoptive home. Her owner had a medical issue and her family was unable to care for Luna. Luna returned to us completely bewildered, unsure what just happened, and with a few extra pounds that we're helping her shed with time and care. She loves sunbathing, food, and taking long naps - ideally in her favorite cave bed. She is not very leash-trained so would love a fenced in yard to explore (and sunbathe in). She is housetrained, pee pad trained, and gets along beautifully with the other dogs in her foster home. Luna is a great passenger in the car, sleeps through the night, and doesn't mind staying home alone while her humans are out. She needs eye drops twice a day but doesn't mind taking them as long as she is in her bed, which is her safe space. Like many seniors (human and canine!), she has some trouble hearing and seeing, and needs a hand navigating stairs. Since she doesn't love being picked up, a home without stairs would be best. Luna likes having a consistent routine and would love a home that is generally calm and quiet. She's also big on food and snacks (as evidenced by her weight!) - her forever family will need to continue supporting her on her weight loss journey and help her maintain a healthy weight. Luna is a chill, sweet, quiet girl who would love a permanent place to sunbathe. Could you be the one to finally give this girl the forever she deserves? Luna is approximately 10 years old and 10 lbs. Fostered in Severn, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
Meet Ernestine, aka Tina! This elegant queen has fully settled into her routine and is living her best life. Tina was found as a stray down south, lost, frightened, and unsure of what kindness looks like. Now she’s safe at the Haven after taking her very first flight to get to us. She’s spending her time in foster care resting, healing, and learning the fine art of chihuahua diplomacy in a house full of tiny, friendly supervisors who have made her feel right at home. Tina adores exploring the yard at her own pace, following foster mom around for treats, and supervising household activities like a tiny, silent CEO. She still isn’t a fan of being handled, and leash training… well… let’s call it a journey. She does great once the leash is on, but getting it on and off? Absolutely not. A fenced yard would be ideal for her comfort and peace. Tina is a wonderfully independent girl who would love a calm home where she can just chill out, vibe, and socialize when food is involved. She’s not a cuddle bug, and she’ll tell you that herself, but she’s a lovely companion for anyone who appreciates quiet company, a gentle presence, and a little lady who lives life on her own terms. Tina is looking for a home with patient humans who will let her acclimate on her own timeline. While it takes her some time to trust you and she's not much for snuggling yet, she LOVES chicken jerky treats and they are a surefire way to win her heart. She bravely eats them directly from her foster mom's hand, and will even let her foster mom pick her up as long as she does it confidently. She has recently permitted foster mom the honor of delivering chin rubs, which is basically her version of signing a peace treaty. While Tina is generally a quiet, gentle little lady, she has strong opinions about dinner being served promptly at 5pm. She toddles behind her foster mom from room to room, selecting cozy beds the way some of us collect throw pillows. And she is a great dining companion: as soon as her foster mom sits down to eat dinner, Tina is right in front of her asking for a seat at the table. She's not leash-trained so she'll require a fenced-in yard. She loves bouncing around her foster mom's yard like a silly, happy explorer. Tina gets along well with other small dogs - we haven't had a chance to observe her with bigger ones yet. She's learning lots of new skills in her foster home and is making great progress on both stairs and housetraining. For now, she will benefit from having some potty pads around. She does well in the car and is happy to stay home while her humans are at work. Tina is looking for a quiet, gentle, and patient forever family who will win her over one chicken jerky treat at a time. Could it be yours? Ernestine is approximately 9 years old and 10 lbs. Story
Meet Piglet! He’s a sentient loaf with a tender soul wrapped in a rotund exterior —like if a Hot Pocket came to life. Piglet came to Miri's at twice the weight he should be, and he has been killing the fitness game since he got here: he’s gone from 12.4 lbs to 8.5, has started conquering indoor stairs (just the “up” for now. We celebrate progress, not perfection), and his sticky neck skin is healed. He loves leash outings, and if you so much as whisper the word “walk,” he’ll bark and bounce like a snack-sized gazelle. We’re keeping up with Piglet's health regimen and cheering him on every step (or stair) of the way. Piglet is looking for his forever home… but he’s not looking that hard because he refuses to move from his current cozy spot. So you’ll have to come to him. Here's what you need to know about this friendly (and sometimes spicy) burrito: - He gets along well with other dogs and cats and would love a canine brother or sister - He's working hard on housetraining and rocking a belly band in the meanwhile - He can be left home alone without starting a riot or getting into mischief - He LOVES exploring outside and smelling all the smells - his ideal home will have a fenced in yard and a family who'll take him on lots of walks and adventures (even hikes once he's slimmed down a bit!) Piglet needs time to warm up to new people before he trusts them enough for pets (honestly, seems like a good rule for all of us). His forever family will need to be patient, go slowly with him, and learn his body language so they can tell when he's uncomfortable and give him space. But once he knows he can trust you, he is the most loving, loyal, sweet, and squishy man. Piglet thrives in chill, predictable environments. So, no toddlers, no loud parties, and definitely no surprise guests dropping by all the time. Gentle, patient humans who are home a lot? Perfect. He’s also more of a “ladies’ man” than a “dude’s dude,” so he tends to prefer women over men. Most importantly, Piglet needs a family that will help him continue on his weight-loss journey. He’s got dreams of running, jumping, and chasing squirrels like a real, active dog. Help him reach his full potential, and he’ll reward you with love, loyalty, and cuddle sessions. Currently, Piglet's breathing seems labored, which may be weight-related. He has a level three (out of five) heart murmur that does not require medication. This little burrito has a heart as big as his body and will bring his forever family an endless supply of love, joy, and laughter. Submit your application for his review today! Piglet is approximately 8 years old and 8.5 lbs. Fostered in Woodbridge, VA Please apply at MirisHaven.org
