Story
Meet Velma. This young momma dog and her three puppies were found abandoned on Kelly Mountain in Logan County, WV, discovered by a group of hunters far from any homes. When the hunters stopped, the dogs immediately approached them, friendly and social, leading us to believe Velma likely once had a home and that she and her puppies were intentionally left behind. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and took the little family into her home until rescue help could be found. Because of her compassion and quick action, Velma and her pups are now safe and have settled into their local foster homes. Velma has proven to be a sweet, affectionate pup who is great with other dogs and good with kids, and has been fostered with both. She's still young-dog jumpy, so kids out of the toddler stage are probably best, but this is correctable behavior. She’s currently living as an only dog with her foster mom, Norie, soaking up all the attention. Velma recently visited the vet to get up to date on vaccinations and diagnostics and was given a clean bill of health as a young, healthy adolescent pup. Norie shared this update: “The vet visit went well. Velma rides well in the car and was great with the staff, a very good patient. She’s friendly with everyone we’ve met and really enjoys other dogs. She’s housetrained and hasn’t had a single accident in my house. She sleeps peacefully in a crate next to my bed at night. She’s OK on leash but needs more practice. She can get excited and a bit jumpy when she wants to meet another dog. Once she meets them, she does well, though not all dogs want to engage. Velma has some spunk and loves to play and chase balls, but she also knows how to settle down inside.I taught her sit in one day, so she’s very smart. She loves cuddling on the couch. Very affectionate. Can’t get enough of going outside and loves to go for walks." This sweet, more submissive girl will make a wonderful family dog or new pack member. She’s still a young pup who needs to learn her basic commands and fine-tune her leash skills, but her social skills and house manners are already excellent. Apply today! Story
Meet Tilly &#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143 This sweet girl was purchased from a breeder to hunt squirrels, but despite her Mountain Feist lineage, she WASN’T a natural hunter with a strong prey drive. When she wouldn’t bark at treed squirrels, she was deemed unfit for hunting.  Tilly spent her early life as a hunter’s dog, living in an outdoor kennel with concrete floors and a wooden box for shelter, never knowing the comforts of home or what it meant to be part of a family. Thankfully, one of our volunteers knew the hunter and stepped in to secure Tilly’s safety. Over the past 6 weeks, Tilly’s world has completely transformed. She’s now living in a warm foster home with Hannah and her two dogs. She integrated easily, follows her foster siblings everywhere, and learns by watching them. In the beginning, she was a bit protective of her crate space, likely a remnant from her past life. As she’s settled in and learned she’s safe, she’s let go of behaviors tied to her past life outside. Tilly was shy at first, but she’s truly blossomed. She now seeks out affection, follows her foster mom around, and has been wonderful with guests. She’s sweet, friendly, and comfortable meeting new people. Though indoor life was new to her (mirrors, TVs, and dishwashers were scary at first), she’s made huge strides in confidence. She now happily snuggles on the couch, sleeps under the covers, gives the sweetest kisses, and lives for head scratches. Tilly has a medium energy level. She enjoys running around the yard but is laid-back and calm in the house. She is crate-trained, and her crate is her safe space. She’s making good progress with potty training; she knows she’s supposed to go outside, but is still learning how to signal her foster mom. She’s also doing well on leash; she may pull initially, but she corrects quickly. She will watch squirrels closely, but doesn’t try to chase. She’s just aware.  Tilly has discovered what it means to feel safe and loved, and she’s blossoming more every day. She has done well as part of a pack but would also be fine as an only dog. She has not shown any food or treat guarding; however, she can be protective of toys and tends to hoard them. She’s new to having belongings of her own and is still learning how to share appropriately. Overall, Tilly is a pretty easy pup. She’s sweet as can be and adapting well to her new life.  Apply today!   BREED ESTIMATE: Mountain Feist GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  23 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 2 years old COAT TYPE: Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425.00 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed, microchipped LOCATION: Vienna, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Foster Homes Needed! Do you have time and room in your life for a foster dog? http://www.muttloverescue.org/foster.html *****************   Chihuahua Mix Male (neutered) - Adult Looking for that smart, funny guy that can go anywhere and considers new adventures the very best thing in life?  Just pick up a leash and Ace starts dancing around ready to roll. And speaking of rolling, rolling around on the couch or in bed is probably his second most favorite thing to do.  So expect to share both with him and expect to laugh. Treats can also be used to persuade him in to learning cute tricks and are expected when he heads to his crate because that's what a good boy does. Want a dance partner, Ace is your guy. He can do the best little hind leg twirling. He also does love to give soft kisses and snuggles and his coat is so soft, who wouldn't want to snuggle with him. He also watches and is incredibly smart, he may think he is a bit human too.  Ace is a 2-3 years old chihuahua/spitz mix who is fully vetted. Crate trained but not his favorite thing and remember the treat. Potty trained, set ground rules about marking when he enters his new environment and he is smart so knows its not allowed. He has a voice and is not a barker but probably not the best for an apartment. Ace is good with canine family members (a little loud when he plays).  Cats are ok too.  **BECAUSE OF OUR REQUIREMENT FOR A HOME VISIT, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO ADOPT TO HOMES IN THE NORTHERN VA / MARYLAND / DC METRO AREA** We have adoption events EVERY SATURDAY from 12-3 p.m. Please note that not all dogs can attend every event, so if you are interested in meeting a particular dog, please complete a no-obligation application on our website at http://www.muttloverescue.org/application.html OR write to adopt@muttloverescue.org. IF YOU ARE VIEWING THIS LISTING ON PETFINDER OR ADOPT-A-PET, please visit: Caninesandkittiesrescue.org to access adoption requirements, more information and pictures. ***Special adopter needed*** Meet Winter – The Chihuahua who doesn’t know she needs you. Are you looking for a dog who will love you instantly, sit in your lap and cuddle sweetly, come when you call, stare lovingly into your eyes and gently kiss your nose? Yeah… that’s not this one. Winter came from a hoarding situation, so she missed the class on How to Dog 101. She’s kind of… let’s say… socially awkward and deeply suspicious. She thinks companionship is unnecessary, affection is a scam, and the floor is lava unless she decides otherwise. She’s not broken—just running on some “alternative software.” She possesses the independence of an aloof cat and the stubbornness of a Bassett hound, wrapped up in the tiny body of a Chihuahua that’s bursting with trust issues. This little 15-pound gremlin is all flight and no fight, and those little legs can take her fast and far, so you better hold onto that leash tight. What she’s into: ~Dodging you ~Clutching her pearls with offense and judgment ~Side-eyeing you like you just stole her credit card ~Redefining “personal space”, think big! ~Doing absolutely nothing you asked her to do, unless it’s her idea ~Slowly, very slowly, realizing some humans have tasty treats, but not all treats are good enough ~Leash walks are her jam, just face forward and don’t look at her What she’s not into: ~Fast friendships ~Being touched, picked up, looked at or approached without her express permission, which she won’t give you ~Normal dog things (fetch? kisses? toys? puppy play dates? Pass.) Is she good with other dogs and cats in the home? Like her feelings about you, she couldn’t care less about other pets, as long as no one is trying to eat her or run her over. With time, patience, and a sense of humor, she’ll learn the world isn’t so scary. If you adopt her, and her trust issues, eventually, you’ll probably earn the rarest prize of all: her very reluctant affection (no guarantees). Apply today if you’re ready to love a dog who isn’t ready to love you, but is super cute, deserves better than the hand she was dealt in life, and might one day think you’re alright. Every dog deserves a home! Winter is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. ***You must be at least 25 years of age to adopt from Canine and Kitties Rescue*** The adoption fee for this dog is $375.00, which helps with the cost of routine vet care. ***Please note that our first step in approving adoption applicants is to complete a vet check. Vetting of current and past pets is very important to us, thus we will be speaking with the vet(s) listed on your application to ensure that your current and previous pet(s) are kept up to date on vaccines (including rabies), spayed or neutered, maintained on appropriate monthly preventatives and examined annually by your vet.*** Our organization cannot guarantee the exact breed of any animal in our care. The breed listed is based on any background we may have been provided, and/or the general appearance of the animal. **Please visit www.caninesandkittiesrescue.org to complete our non-binding application.**
