Story
Meet Shaggy...One of the Scooby Doo puppies! Shaggy's story began on Kelly Mountain in Logan County, West Virginia, where he, his mom, and two brothers were found abandoned by a group of hunters far from any nearby homes. When the hunters stopped, the little family immediately approached them, friendly and social, leading us to believe they once belonged to someone and were intentionally left behind. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and took the family into her home until rescue help could be secured. Because of her compassion, Shaggy got the second chance he deserved. His mom and brothers have all been adopted, so now it’s Shaggy’s turn. For the past few months, Shaggy has been in his local foster home, living as part of a busy family. He's being fostered with a mom and dad, two children, two adult dogs, and has frequent toddler visitors from the 3-year-old grandson. He loves kids and is very gentle and affectionate with them. He would happily spend his day being held or included in whatever his people are doing. Shaggy has great house manners - he is crate trained, potty trained, sleeps through the night, and is not destructive. He has moved beyond the baby puppy stage now. He's a naturally happy boy who enjoys the company of other dogs and loves spending time with his family. Like many young dogs, Shaggy is still working on his leash manners and social skills. He can be barky when meeting some new people or dogs while on leash, though it's intermittent and situation-dependent. We had a trainer evaluate him, and he feels Shaggy simply needs more exposure to new environments outside the home to continue building his confidence. His foster family has been working with him consistently, and he's already making progress.  We believe Shaggy's ideal home would include another confident, social dog to be both a playmate and a role model. He would likely do best in a suburban setting rather than a busy urban environment. This sweet boy is ready for a forever family that will continue helping him grow while giving him all the love of family. ❤️ Apply today ! BREED ESTIMATE: Feist or Terrier Mix (his brothers were part Beagle) GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: ~ 29 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~  6 months old COAT TYPE:  short ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/microchipped LOCATION: Vienna, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Story
Meet Forever Love aka Lovie, a happy-go-lucky 6-month-old puppy who's embracing everything puppyhood has to offer! She's full of enthusiasm, curiosity, and joy, always ready for her next adventure. One of her favorite things in the world is being outdoors. Whether it's a long walk or a trip to the park for a game of fetch,  she's happiest when she's exploring and playing. She's become quite the fetch enthusiast and loves chasing after a ball. She's still working on bringing it back every time, but she's making great progress and learns quickly with encouragement and consistency. After a day of fun, she's all about cuddles and relaxation. She loves being close to her people and has a talent for falling asleep in the funniest, most adorable positions once she's comfortable. Like any young puppy, she's still learning the ropes. She's currently working on her potty training and basic manners and will thrive with a family committed to continuing her training and helping her grow into the amazing dog she's destined to be. She absolutely loves people and gets along well with other dogs, though she prefers to take a moment to assess new canine friends before jumping into play. Because she's still young and excited about life, she can be a little exuberant when meeting people. Her ideal home would be with an active family or individual who enjoys spending time outdoors and can provide plenty of exercise, playtime, and enrichment. A fenced backyard would be a dream for endless games of fetch, but she'd also make an excellent walking, running, or hiking companion for those on the go.  With patience, consistency, and lots of love, this sweet girl will blossom into an incredible lifelong companion. If you're looking for a happy, affectionate, adventure-loving puppy to grow with your family, she may be the perfect match. Adoption Day: July 11th at PetSmart Tysons Corner from 10:00–11:00 AM, an approved adopter must be present to adopt. Some pups may be part of the public event—check our Facebook page closer to the date to see if this pup will be attending the extra fun! ##2639047##

Story
-ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 15 lbs -ESTIMATED AGE: 1.5 years -KNOWN WITH DOGS: Molly also did well meeting some of our neighbors, including few dogs. No wagging tails or proactive sniffing, but polite and cautious greetings. -KNOWN WITH CATS: unknown -KNOWN WITH KIDS: Same with neighborhood kids - very cautious and jumpy with sudden moves and noises, but no aggression. Molly has started to open up more towards our kids, and even jumped into our 7 yr old's lap the other day. She still doesn't play with the kids and ignores them most of the time (she prefers me and my husband), but will sit for her treats and won't say no to a few scratches and pets. -KNOWN CUES: Molly knows now the command "sit", and knows to sit and wait for her meal. We are working on "stay" now. -KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING: housebroken. Good in crate during day. Working on not whining at night but she's improving. May have some excited pee that she's working on! -KNOWN LIKES: following her person around -KNOWN DISLIKES: loud noises, new things! Will need help continuing to socialize. ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Molly is coming to HT from a rural VA shelter. Her elderly owner could no longer care for her. Notes from the foster: Molly is a pretty calm, dog. She occasionally house outbursts of energy but nothing crazy! She enjoys going on walks and being with her people. She would be a good fit for someone home more often than not since she does bark and have a touch of separation anxiety (barking). Meet Maisy – Your Built-In Hype Girl with Cow-Print Spots 🤍🖤 With her adorable black-and-white “cow” spots and bright personality, Maisy is the kind of dog you don’t forget. She’s equal parts silly, smart, and deeply loving—and once you’re in her circle, you’ll feel like the most important person in the world. Lola is truly a dog in a million! Though why she ended up in a rural Virginia shelter remains a mystery, one thing is certain: everyone who meets her agrees she is absolutely perfect. Training & Manners: Lola comes fully prepared for her forever home. She loves car rides. Both crate-trained and house-trained, she walks beautifully on a leash without pulling, and is remarkably quiet and obedient. Her foster family reports zero separation anxiety or destructive behaviors, making her adaptable to any living situation. And did we mention she is photogenic and will happily pose for your pictures? Social Butterfly: A gentle soul, Lola is incredibly loving and affectionate with everyone she meets, especially women and children. She thrives in a pack environment, getting along famously with her current dog roommates. There is no resource guarding or toy stealing with this girl; she shares happily. The shelter team thought she was good with cats, noting her complete lack of prey drive—she even ignores squirrels! The Perfect Fit: Whether you live in a cozy apartment or a sprawling house, Lola will flourish as long as she is by your side. She is the ultimate companion who simply wants a chance to love and be loved. Could that person be you? HART Homepage: https://hart90.org/ Questions About this Animal? Story
Meet Madison!  This beautiful little Chihuahua mix came from a heartbreaking hoarding situation. At one point, Madison's owner had 51 dogs living in a small trailer. Thankfully, concerned family members stepped in to help address a situation that had gotten out of control, and the number of dogs has since been significantly reduced.   Worthy Dog became involved through one of our veterinary partners. We sponsor the spay/neuter clinic that has been altering the remaining dogs at no cost to stop the cycle and prevent the population from growing. So far, we've welcomed four dogs from the property into our rescue, with plans to help even more.   When Madison first arrived in her South Carolina foster home, she spent her first few days safely tucked away in her crate, quietly taking in her new surroundings. She had spent her entire life in a small, isolated environment where the outside world simply didn't exist. Every day household sounds, open spaces, and new experiences were all unfamiliar and overwhelming.   Over the course of a month in her quiet, rural foster home, Madison gained confidence. She learned to trust her foster mom, Renee, followed her from room to room, enjoyed cuddles, and gained confidence from the other dogs in the home. She even started playing with her foster siblings, which was great to see her joy.   Madison arrived in Northern Virginia on June 21 and is now settling into her local foster home. The move to a larger home in a busier area has been another big adjustment, and she's taking things at her own pace. Change is hard for Madison, and each new environment requires time, patience, and consistency before she feels safe.   She is still learning that people, noises, and everyday life aren't something to fear. While she's making steady progress, she remains very cautious around strangers and unfamiliar situations. She's house-trained and crate-trained, but she's still building confidence with leash walking and isn't quite ready for neighborhood strolls.   Madison is looking for a calm home where she can continue to thrive. She needs a quiet, low-traffic neighborhood - city living, apartments, and busy communities would be too overwhelming. A securely fenced yard is strongly preferred so she can safely explore at her own pace while she gains confidence. A calm, confident resident dog would be a tremendous help, giving Madison someone to follow and learn from. More than anything, she needs an adopter who understands that trust isn't instant.    Madison may not be the dog who immediately greets every visitor at the door, but she will evolve and learn to trust. She needs an owner who understands that confidence-building is a process, and watching her confidence grow will be incredibly rewarding. She's already shown us that, given patience, consistency, and love, she can blossom into a happy little companion ❤️   Apply today! Story
**NEEDS FOSTER** Meet Wilson! This adorable young pup came into rescue after living with an elderly owner who was no longer able to properly care for him. Wilson is now safe in foster care and looking for an active forever family that can keep up with his zest for life. Wilson is everything people love about puppies - playful, curious, affectionate, and full of personality. He approaches every day with enthusiasm and excitement and is always ready for his next adventure. His foster mom describes him as incredibly smart, very entertaining, and definitely a bit of a handful in the way that only adolescent puppies can be. Wilson is a high-energy pup. He loves to play, explore, and stay busy. Because of this, we strongly feel he would thrive in a home with another young, playful dog who can help burn off some of that energy. He loves canine companionship and would enjoy having a buddy to wrestle, chase, and play with. As far as his house manners, he is making good progress with housetraining. Early on, he showed some excited or submissive urination, but this has improved significantly in foster care. He is crate-trained and keeps his crate clean when his foster parents are out of the home. While he may protest for a few minutes when first crated, he settles down and relaxes once he realizes it's time to rest. On walks, Wilson is generally well-behaved and enjoys exploring the world around him. He can be a little unsure when meeting new dogs and may need a moment to warm up, but he gains confidence quickly and looks to his people for reassurance. Like many adolescent dogs, Wilson is still learning what belongs to him and what doesn't. If left unattended, he'll happily investigate coffee tables, towels, clothing, and anything else that looks interesting. In Wilson's mind, everything is a toy. The good news is that he's very smart and responds well to correction and guidance. This type of behavior is very normal for a 7- to 8-month-old puppy and will continue to improve with training, structure, and maturity. Once he's had plenty of exercise and playtime, Wilson reveals his softer side. He loves to snuggle, enjoys burrowing under blankets, and is more than happy to curl up next to his favorite people. Despite his busy nature, he's a small dog who enjoys affection and wants to be part of the family. Wilson is looking for adopters who understand puppy behavior and are ready to provide structure, training, exercise, and plenty of opportunities for play. In return, he'll bring energy, laughter, companionship, and endless entertainment to your home. If you're looking for a fun-loving young dog with a big personality and an even bigger heart, Wilson may be the perfect addition to your family.  We need a foster or an adopter to bring Wilson to town. Foster-to-adopt is an option, too! Apply today!   BREED ESTIMATE: Terrier/Chi Mix GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 17 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: ~6 months old COAT TYPE:  Short ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: UTD on shots/neutered/microchipped LOCATION: Charlotte, NC - Needs a foster to come to the DC metro FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Otis   This sweet little Chihuahua was rescued alongside his buddy Clara Belle after spending much of his life as an outdoor dog in rural South Carolina. Thankfully, his owners surrendered him to a local shelter, giving him the opportunity for the safe, loving life he deserves. When Otis came into our care, he tested positive for heartworm and was overdue for a dental. Since then, he's completed heartworm treatment, had a dental, and is now up to date on all veterinary care. For the past few months, he's been living as an inside dog in foster care with multiple dogs and cats. He's gentle and easygoing with other dogs and adores the cats. He’s a live-and-let-live kind of pup. Otis is a naturally social Chihuahua who genuinely enjoys people. Whether he's greeting visitors at home or charming the staff at the vet's office, he's all tail wags and happy energy. He's housetrained, though his foster mom uses pee pads as a backup when she's gone for longer periods. While Otis walks nicely on leash, he's still a bit timid in new environments and needs time to build trust and settle in. Once he feels safe, however, his true personality shines. His foster mom notes that he's not a fan of going up stairs, though he handles going down them just fine, so he may simply need patience and encouragement as he continues to gain confidence. Because Otis can be nervous in unfamiliar situations, his adopters should be mindful that he may be a flight risk during the adjustment period. Once he's comfortable, though, he becomes deeply attached to his people and wants nothing more than to be close to them. Otis loves all the comforts of home - soft beds, cozy blankets, and warm laps. He's a devoted little companion who considers himself a professional lap dog and is happiest curled up next to his favorite person. If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate companion who will reward your patience with unwavering loyalty and love, Otis may be the perfect match.
