Story
Pluto will keep you entertained with his antics and his inquisitiveness! He is a 1-year old Greek Harehound/Shepherd mix that weighs 60 pounds and came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 1/21 as a stray. He is definitely unique in his appearance. He’s sort of goofy in a good way. He’s very playful. When he was out in the yard, he saw me going in and came running. He’s alert and investigated everything in the yard and in the meet and greet room. He found toys and entertained himself with them. He didn’t appear to know the sit command or any other commands. He’s friendly, active, and very outgoing. He required some coaxing initially to get him to walk on a leash. Because he occasionally jumps on you and he’s a big boy, he will need some help learning his manners. He would do well with an active family. He’s too big for an apartment and would need a yard to get out and expend some energy in. He does want to be an inside dog so he can enjoy time with his new family.

Story
Ritz is a 2 yr old male Shepherd mix that weighs 66lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 3/18 as a stray. He’s has energy of a young puppy. He happily pranced and galloped back-and-forth in the shelter yard. At one point he chased some balls, but he didn’t retrieve them. As he was done in the yard, he checked out all of his surroundings. He’s very alert and curious. He does jump on you. He gets down when told to do so, but he will need some manners training to learn not to do this. He also sits for treats but will need to learn to take them gently. I know he’s smart and he’s highly motivated by treats so he should be a quick learner. He’s friendly, happy, playful, and very affectionate. He walks OK on a leash. He’d be best suited for an active family. He would not do well in an apartment due to his energy level. He will need a yard and/or frequent exercise to expend some of his energy. But then he would want to come in and curl up next to you on the couch or in his own soft bed.

Story
Shelby is very sweet, loving and deserving of a good home where she’s well cared for. Judging from the fly bites on her ears, the fact that she’s had a litter not too long ago, and that her ribs are showing indicate to me that she has probably been an outside dog. She deserves to be an inside dog where she can get an abundance of TLC! Shelby is a three-year-old 60 pound shepherd mix that arrived at the Mesquite Shelter on 11/14 as a stray. She is already spayed! I was met at her kennel with tail wags. When I got her out into the yard, she spent a lot of time exploring with her nose. Her sense of smell is obviously very important to her. She sits for treats but doesn’t stay in that position for very long. She came to me for extra loving. I get the feeling she may not have had a whole lot of socialization. She’s friendly, loving, well mannered, easy-going, and very alert. She definitely wanted to know what was going on beyond the gate., She didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs, and she walks OK on a leash . Please open your heart and your home to this lovable pup.

Story
Meet Derek, a Belgian Shepherd mix that came into the Mesquite animal shelter on 3/28 as a stray. Derek weighs 53 lbs and is about 2 yrs old.Talk about a fun-loving goofy boy! He is crazy about tennis balls and toys and will keep himself entertained (and you as well) playing with them. He walks quite nicely on a leash. This charming, highly adoptable fellow has plenty of energy and would love a home with a good yard in order for him to stretch his legs and burn off some energy. He wants to live indoors with his people, socializing, cuddling, and enjoying life with them. He does jump so that is a behavior that will need to be worked on. Until then he might not be a good fit for a family with small children. He is friendly, enjoys being loved on and is just an all-around delightful boy! Derek is best suited to a person or family who would provide daily enrichment, playtime, and exercise. He does not seem to know any commands but would undoubtedly be open to learning some. He loves treats so that may be a good inducement to learning some commands.

Story
Meet Rocket! He arrived on 4/4 in the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray. He weighs 45 lbs and is about 1 year old and is neutered. Rocket has the most attractive brindle coat and according to my Dog Scanner app is a 91% Dutch Shepherd. He appears to have been cared for but his people have not come looking for him. He walks very nicely on a leash. He did his business as soon as he arrived in the shelter yard. He appears to have adjusted well to shelter life, and has an outgoing, confident personality. He has a moderate activity level. Rocket is playful and had so much fun chasing tennis balls around the meet and greet room. He does jump on you a bit and easy to see he misses his family. This friendly tail-wagging boy enjoyed being petted on. He longs to be in the home of loving and caring people who will provide a safe, secure and committed life for him. He would like nothing better than to leave shelter life behind and get settled in with a new family who would give him all the love and attention he deserves and a comfy cozy inside life.

Story
This adorable pup is Ladybug. She was surrendered on 4/29 to the Mesquite Animal Shelter. The prior owners adopted her as a puppy from another shelter. They felt Ladybug wasn’t a good fit for their living situation so she is back in a city shelter once again through no fault of her own. This winsome mixed breed youngster weighs 35 lbs, is 6 mo old and is spayed. She is very friendly and sociable and wanted several times to climb into my lap. This very likable and highly adoptable youngster would make someone a devoted pet. She walks well on a leash, is calm, gentle, and well behaved. At 6 mo of age, she has ended up in two different city shelters. This must be extremely disappointing and confusing to this precious pooch and she is a bit timid and uneasy at this time. Undoubtedly she will warm up and feel more comfortable with further interaction. Her people did take good care of her as she has the softest silkiest fur, is well fed and healthy. They stated that for the short time she lived with them, she was an inside dog. Ladybug hopes her next (and hopefully forever) home will be lived inside with her peeps.

Story
Meet Echo! Echo is a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois with a heart full of energy and a brain that loves to work. Weighing in at 76 pounds, this handsome boy is everything you’d expect from his breed: loyal, intense, driven, and always ready for the next challenge. Echo thrives in an active home with someone experienced in working breeds, especially Malinois. He’s incredibly affectionate, loves belly rubs, and lives for a game of fetch or tug-of-war. His toy drive is through the roof, and he’s a fast learner who enjoys training and mentally engaging tasks. He’s already mastered sit, down, and shake, and he’s currently working on heel, recall, leash manners, and place. This confident guy is crate and potty trained, neutered, fully vetted, and eager to bond with his person. Echo would likely excel in dog sports like Fast CAT, fetch competitions, or even agility. He just needs the right outlet for his energy and drive. He does best with large, submissive dogs and has not been tested with small dogs or cats. Due to his prey drive, caution is advised around small animals. He can be a little anxious at times, but his confidence and love for people help him bounce back quickly. If you’re home often, love to train, and are looking for a high-octane best friend who’s as smart as he is sweet, Echo may just be your perfect match. ##2382034##

Story
I adopted Whiskey when she was 8 weeks old and we have a very strong bond. She is super happy and friendly. She is EXTREMELY high energy and requires lots of play time and walks or a place to run. She grew up with other dogs but is currently an only child. She has not been around small children. She has an excellent temperament and is extremely smart, which sometimes makes her mischievous. She is fully crate trained. She has an extremely sensitive stomach so her food and treats have to be closely monitored. She also struggles to keep weight on due to her high metabolism, though the vet said she is at a healthy weight for her breed. She does better with women and takes longer to warm up to men. I am only rehoming her because I have become the primary caretaker for my mom, and Whiskey’s energy level doesn’t do well with my mother’s unsteadiness and need for a walker. She will come with food, toys, harness, leash, collar, brushes, crate, treats, dental sticks, and heartworm preventative.
