Story
Waffles is a 7-month-old Husky/Terrier mix weighing about 27 lbs — and he’s just as sweet as his name suggests! This handsome boy is full of energy and joy, and he’s looking for an active family who can keep up with his playful spirit. Waffles loves to play with other dogs and would thrive with a canine buddy. He hasn’t been tested with cats. He’s also great with kids, though he’s still working on keeping all four paws on the ground when he gets excited (we redirect him with an “off” and help guide his legs down). He’s crate-trained — he sleeps through the night in his crate (from about 10:30 pm to 6 am) and settles nicely when left alone. Potty training is still a work in progress, but with consistency and patience, he’ll catch on quickly. Walks are one of Waffles’ favorite things! He’s a strong puller, so a harness helps, and he’d do best in a home with a fenced yard where he can safely burn off his energy. Above all, Waffles loves attention and companionship. He’ll bring a lot of fun, love, and laughter to a family who can give him the activity and training he needs as he grows. Could Waffles be the missing piece in your family?   If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will send to the foster family to set up a meet! The adoption fee of $450 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm and any other necessary medical treatment to assure a healthy new pup for your family. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Although we do our best to describe breed, since our pups all come from shelters we can not and will not make any guarantee on breed or size. We can tell you that they are 100% RESCUED! And that is the BEST breed! *please note that we are a foster home based rescue and we do home visits as part of the adoption process - we are unable to adopt to families who live outside of the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Story
This 9-month-old, 30 lb Lab/Terrier mix is equal parts spunky and sweet, and she's on the lookout for her forever family! Mary is a playful pup who absolutely loves romping around with the resident dog in her foster home. She plays hard, wrestles joyfully, and is always up for a game of tug or a shared snuggle. She gets along great with other dogs and would thrive with a playful canine sibling who can match her energy and help her learn the ropes. She's also house-trained and crate-trained, though she does have some crate-related quirks. Mary tends to get protective of her space and isn’t a fan of people approaching her crate unless it’s time to let her out. Outside of the crate, she’s been social, loving, and well-mannered around both adults and kids (ages 10 and up). Mary is still a young pup, so she’s working on her manners—like keeping all four paws on the floor when greeting people and learning not to “surf” the table for snacks. She knows “sit,” comes when called (most of the time!), and is starting to follow her foster brother’s lead in ringing the bells to go outside… though sometimes it’s just a clever way to distract him and sneak a toy. She may bark for a few seconds when new people arrive—but she’s a smart girl, and her foster family is working on building her confidence through training and consistency. If you’re looking for a fun, affectionate, and clever young dog to grow and learn with, Mary could be the perfect match! She’ll do best in a home that’s ready to continue her training, offers some structure, and ideally has a friendly dog to play with. If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will send to the foster family to set up a meet! Meet JJ – Your High-Energy Playmate in Training! &#226&#154&#161 JJ is a 1-year-old Lab mix bursting with energy, personality, and potential! He’s crate trained, housebroken, and always ready for action — especially if there’s a tennis ball involved. This guy lives to play ball, chew on his bones, and romp around with his toys. JJ  is still learning how to settle down and relax, so he’s not quite the snuggly type yet — but with time, patience, and the right structure, he has every chance of becoming a loyal and loving companion. He’s looking for an experienced family who can help guide him, provide consistent training, and give him the mental and physical stimulation he needs to thrive. A secure, fenced-in yard is a must — JJ has lots of energy to burn and needs room to run and play safely. He gets along with other dogs and would likely love a playful dog sibling to match his energy! That said, JJ’s enthusiastic style of play isn't for every pup, so any resident dog should be able to handle a bouncy buddy. If you're an active household looking for a fun, smart, energetic companion with tons of potential, JJ might just be your perfect match. With the right guidance, this high-octane goofball is going to make someone a very happy (and very well-exercised) best friend If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Story
Riley is a 28 pound, 6 month old female puppy (born May 2025) with big puppy playfulness that matches her big puppy paws. Based on her current size and weight, she’s looking like she’ll be a large dog. She has gotten along great with other dogs of various ages, and is curious about the cat she’s been around, though she plays a bit too hard for the cat’s tastes. She really wants to be a lap dog at times, especially on car rides. Riley is a bit skittish in new environments and around new people and sounds, so she’ll need continued patient and gentle exposure. She enjoys leashed walks, but occasionally needs some coaxing when she’s skittish and some calming when a squirrel runs by. She relaxes in her crate for naps, night time, and as needed. We’ve been working on “sit”, “come”, and “gimme paw”, and she’s doing well with those commands. She’s doing okay with house training, though still has accidents inside; she’s not consistent with letting us know she needs to go out, so she’s taken outside every few hours and rewarded for successful toileting when she’s out. If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  . Story
My name is Cole. I am a black Lab mix and I am about 1 year old.  I weigh 68 pounds. I am going to tell you about myself through the eyes of three women who have been the beginnings of the journey to find my forever home.  In May, two women were driving through rural western KY and they saw my sister and I on the side of a busy highway.  We were only six months old at the time.  The women are volunteers with Starfish Animal Rescue and they pulled over to help us.  My sister was lying on the white line of the roadside and they were afraid that she had passed away.  I couldn’t tell them what had happened to us, but I was standing right next to my sister to shelter her from any harm.  The women were so kind to us and also incredibly relieved to see that my sister was alive; we jumped into their van without hesitation and they quickly brought us to safety. The women had to return to Chicago and they desperately wanted to take us with them, but our stray hold was not up yet.  We were placed in a temporary foster home in KY and the women promised us that we would find our forever family.  Days turned into months and we kept waiting patiently; we love and trust those two women and we knew that our time would come. That day finally came and on November 21, we got our freedom ride to Chicago!  I’ve been acclimating to life in a big city and I know now how to use stairs, the elevator and I tell my Foster Mom when I need to go outside.  I love to play, take long walks, chew on Bully sticks and snuggle with my Foster Mom.  I am crate trained, but she lets me sleep on her couch; it’s so much warmer and cozier than the outdoor kennel where I was living before. I sit next to her in the evenings and I reach out my paw to her to show her affection.  I’ve never had any formal training but I learn quickly and I am eager to please.   I let my sister climb all over me, take my toys and I don’t even mind.  I do not snap, show reactivity or resource guard. Dogs need a purpose to be mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy.  I am so lucky because I already know what my purpose is.  One night, my Foster Mom was sitting on the floor and I could tell that she was sad.  Her rescue pup died unexpectedly this summer and that’s why she started fostering dogs like me.  She was crying and I knew what to do.  I got up, stood next to her, just like I’d stood next to my sister on that roadside.  I let her hug me tightly, my fur caught her tears and I stayed next to her until my presence calmed her pain.  On walks, we let other humans pass by and I always stand between my Foster Mom and others to make sure she is safe.  I am a gentle giant who has a tender heart.  I’ve been through a lot in my short life and my purpose is protecting those that I love.  It is my dream to find a family who will love and protect me too.  Could that be you?   The adoption fee of $400 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm and any other necessary medical treatment to assure a healthy new pup for your family. Story
Milo is a 1.5-year-old Lab/Hound mix who brings just the right blend of energy, affection, and goofiness to your home. Weighing in at 47 lbs, he’s the perfect size for adventure walks and couch cuddles—and yes, he excels at both! This sweet guy has the spirit of a teenager: sometimes he's zooming through life, and other times he's your classic couch potato. One of his favorite things in the world (besides walkies!) is cuddling. He’ll rest his head on your shoulder or gently place a paw on your leg—he’s just that kind of lovebug. Milo is also a respectful housemate. He gets along wonderfully with his 10-year-old terrier foster sister and plays gently. He’s curious and friendly with cats, too—he might get a little excited when they dart around, but he knows how to read the room and back off when needed. Crate-trained and house-trained, Milo is happy to nap peacefully when you need a break. Just make sure he has chew toys handy—this smart, active boy can get a bit mischievous when he’s bored. A family that can give him daily exercise and some mental stimulation will bring out the best in him. Milo is equal parts fun, affectionate, and well-mannered—a wonderful companion who’s ready to find his forever family. Could that be you? Apply to meet Milo today—he can’t wait to cuddle up with you!   If you are interested in adopting/meeting this pup , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application  .
Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will send to the foster family to set up a meet! The adoption fee of $400 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm and any other necessary medical treatment to assure a healthy new pup for your family.
