Story
Meet Cocoa — the sweetest senior girl around 💕 At 12 years old, this 60lb lap dog still has a serious pep in her step — and plenty of strength to keep up on short adventures! She’s proof that old ladies absolutely can learn new tricks. Cocoa is currently learning leash manners since she’s a strong girl who sometimes struggles to contain her excitement. She already knows basic commands like sit, down, paw, and stay (for a few seconds). She’s fully housetrained, loves napping in her crate, and is happiest when she has a good chew bone and some sunshine. A fenced yard would be her dream because this girl LOVES being outside. Her favorite hobby? Covering you in kisses and climbing directly into your lap for cuddles. She’s incredibly affectionate and wants nothing more than to be near her people. Cocoa would likely do best as the only dog in the home so she can soak up all the love and attention for herself 💕 If you’re looking for a loyal, goofy, loving best friend with the sweetest soul, Cocoa is your girl. If you would like to meet this dog, please call Teri at 630-897-7454. The adoption fee is $150. Adoption fee includes: - microchip - spay/neuter - age appropriate vaccinations: Bordetella, DH(L)PP, rabies - heartworm preventive & flea/tick preventive - deworming

Story
Maxx is between 11-13 years old. He was dumped at the shelter because the family said they were not sure if he would get along with the new baby. Unfortunately that is hard to believe since there was already an 11 and 12 year old in the house. From his paperwork it looks like he did not see the vet for the past 6 years and he needed a dental for at least 8 years. Once Rover Rescue swooped in to get him, that was all about to change. Maxx got a full check up and after clearing up a urinary tract infection, he had his much needed dental which relieve much of his pain. Maxx was placed on an antinflammatory for his back legs and his whole life changed. Maxx loves to jump on the couch for a much needed nap or to look out the window to make sure the neighborhood is safe. Maxx loves strolls around the block to get all his sniffs in. He sleeps through the night in the dog bed on the floor in his foster moms bed or on the couch. He is house broken, unless he has another urinary tract infection. Maxx has a condition with his nails that makes them painful and brittle so he is on a vitamin e, niacinomide and fish oil. All the extra supplements are easy to get from the drug store or amazon. Maxx has learned that being pet is a good thing and he loves his ears and neck rubbed. Maxx is a gentle soul who needs a soft place to land and give all his love to you. He has been in his foster home with multiple dogs and ignores all of them. Maxx is up to date on all his immunizations, microchipped and has already been neutered. To meet Maxx, please call Teri at 630-897-7454. His adoption fee is $150.

Story
Urgent Plea for a Foster Home for Mindy Mindy, a sweet and gentle 9-year-old Lab and Hound mix, desperately needs a safe place to land. Her previous family failed her, and she was abandoned, but she still has so much love left to give. A senior dog might not run a marathon alongside you, but she will happily walk by your side. The slower, gentler pace of life settles into their old bones, making every moment shared with them special. Like fine wine, dogs get better with age—their muzzles may be whiter, but their hearts are fuller. Mindy is a 55lb, loving senior girl who enjoys spending time outside, taking walks, and playing with toys. She still has more energy than a typical senior and thrives on attention, treats, and bones. She does well in playgroups with proper introductions and is currently kenneled with other dogs at the shelter. She is crate trained but, like many senior dogs, needs a consistent routine to manage her bladder. She also walks best with a harness. Mindy’s Story: Mindy came from Texas, where humans failed her, leaving her to face an uncertain fate in a shelter. She is still adjusting and needs a gentle hand to help her rebuild her trust. She is also vocal when meeting new dogs, so proper introductions are essential to help her feel confident. Her Situation is Extremely Urgent! Mindy is finishing up her final 10 days of rest from heartworm treatment and will be ready for adoption soon. However, her current foster family is in crisis and can no longer care for her. She must be relocated immediately. We do not have a physical shelter, and our boarding partners are completely full for the next few weeks due to Spring Break. More than that, we are deeply concerned that placing her in boarding will break her spirit. Mindy deserves a warm bed and the comfort of a home in her senior years. We are desperate to find her a foster or forever family right now. Can You Help? While you foster, we provide all necessary supplies and vet care through our local veterinary partners. You provide the love. If you can help by fostering or adopting Mindy, please email us as soon as possible at: adopt@safehavendogsil.org Please help us help her! Mindy deserves a second chance at love and security. Time is of the essence—she needs you now!

Story
If you're looking for a loyal companion with the perfect mix of playful energy and cuddle expertise, Finn may just be your guy! Finn is a handsome 5-year-old pup with a heart of gold. He can be a little shy when meeting new people, but give him some patience and a little time, and you'll discover one of the sweetest, most loving dogs around. Once he trusts you, Finn's favorite place is right by your side. This lovable boy still has plenty of pep in his step and absolutely loves his daily walks. When playtime rolls around, his goofy side takes center stage! Tennis balls, squeaky toys, and especially squeaky balls are his absolute favorite things in the world. He also enjoys spending time outdoors and occasionally making questionable life choices—like rolling around in the dirt. (He always regrets it when bath time arrives!) Finn is fully potty trained, doesn't require a crate, and already knows several commands including sit, paw, and lay down. While grooming and nail trims can make him a little nervous, he does well with patience, reassurance, and a steady supply of treats. Finn has lived successfully with children of all ages and cats. He currently shares his foster home with other dogs and does well, but he'd appreciate canine companions who understand that everyone needs a little personal space sometimes. His ideal family will be one that gives him the time he needs to settle in, plenty of love and attention, daily walks, and lots of belly rubs. In return, Finn will reward you with loyalty, companionship, and that adorable puppy-dog face that is impossible to resist. If you're searching for an all-around good boy who is equal parts adventure buddy and couch companion, Finn is ready to meet you and steal your heart. Our standard adoption fee is $465. We offer a $15 discount for adopters who pay by cash or check, making the adoption fee $450. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at one of our participating veterinarians, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal test, deworming, current on flea and tick preventative, and microchip. To ensure the best match for both our dogs and adopters, we require a fully completed adoption application, a phone interview, and a meet-and-greet with the entire household. Applications will not be reviewed unless fully completed. Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption and does not obligate you to adopt; it simply allows us to begin the review process. Story
Meet Chestnut – The Sweetest Little Firecracker! 🐾 6-Month-Old Male • Terrier Mix • Energetic & Loving Hi there – I’m Chestnut! I’m a 6-month-old terrier mix puppy who made a big journey from Texas to find my forever family, and I just know they’re out there waiting for me! My foster family says I’m curious, playful, smart, and oh-so-lovable. I’m always up for backyard zoomies, a good game of tug-of-war, or chasing after a ball (fetch is my favorite!). Once I’ve burned off some energy, I love nothing more than curling up on the couch for snuggles. I adore meeting new people and pups—I’ve never met a stranger! While I don’t live with any kids in my foster home, I’ve done well around small children during visits. I also get along great with other dogs and would love a home with a playful furry friend—but I’d also be totally happy as your one and only sidekick. I’m a smart cookie, too! I already know several commands like “Sit,” “Wait,” “Down,” and “No,” and I’m learning more every day. I get super excited and may jump up to say hello, but that’s just my happy puppy energy—if you give me attention, I settle right down. I’m fully potty trained (yay!) as long as I get frequent outdoor breaks, and I sleep soundly all night in my crate. I’ll even take daytime naps in there, especially if there’s a cozy blanket waiting for me. My foster family absolutely loves me, but they know I deserve a forever home that can give me all the love, playtime, and guidance a smart, energetic pup like me needs. Could that be you? I can’t wait to meet you and start our next adventure together! Our standard adoption fee is $375 cash or check and $385 credit card ($10 processing fee). . It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Applications will not be reviewed unless fully completed. An application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee adoption but does allow us to begin the review process.
