Story
Pet Location: Wayside’s Canine Behavior Center – I`d love to show off all the cool things I’ve learned at Wayside! Please arrive at the shelter before 4pm on our open adoption days to meet me! My Friends at Wayside say: - I am enrolled in LIFT University and Waifs with Wisdom. LIFT University is a program for dogs to build confidence in new situations and work on managing energy. Waifs with Wisdom is a program for dogs to learn basic commands and leash walking skills. My adoption comes with a free 30-minute private training session.- During my time at Wayside, I have enjoyed being around other dogs. - New people and things make me a little nervous. Let’s take things slow!- Once I warm up, I have a lot of energy and need an active adopter!- I am eligible for a Slumber Pawty, a 7-10 day in-home trial period. Please visit our website for additional information. My home needs are:- I must go to a home that already has another dog so they can show me the ropes. - I must meet other dogs in the home before adoption to make sure they can “show me the ropes.” Wayside requires bringing your dog to meet me prior to adoption. - I need a home with kids 6 years old and older since I tend to be nervous around new people and loud noises. - A fenced yard is a must for me! I need a secure area to go out for potty breaks. - It`s recommended I go home to an active home.- It`s recommended I go home to a quiet home environment.- For my safety, I need to go home on an anti-slip collar called a martingale collar. For your convenience, we sell them in our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.

Story
Please read bio before applying! Meet Merlin. This young man has had a rough go of it at just 1 year old. Merlin came to us as a commercial breeder release and when we got him at 6 months old, he had never been handled by humans. As a result, he is very distrusting of humans and requires a lot of patience and time to adjust to new people. Merlin is very dog friendly and because he is more comfortable with dogs than humans, we are requiring that he go to a home with at least one other canine. This will help set him up for success. He will also need a home with a secure fenced in yard, as he can be a bit of a flight risk, and he will need a home with no small children. Merlin has the potential to be an amazing companion, he just needs someone who will give him the time he needs to adjust

Story
🐾 George DOB: 6 weeks old Current weight: 6.4 lbs (3/01) Breed: Australian Shepherd/Spaniel mix (best guess) Estimated adult size: ~25–30 lbs George is one of the smaller boys in the group, but don’t let that fool you — he keeps up just fine. He has that softer, spaniel-style expression paired with alert, curious eyes that are always taking everything in. He’s playful, people-focused, and already showing that smart herding-dog curiosity. George enjoys exploring, following his humans around, and wrestling with his siblings. He’s the kind of pup who will bond closely with his family. As an Aussie mix, George will thrive in a home ready for structure, enrichment, and continued training. He’s young and still learning all the basics — potty routines, crate training, and leash skills. ✔️ Playful and observant ✔️ People-oriented ✔️ Medium energy puppy ✔️ Likely 25–30 lbs grown George is ready to grow up with a family who wants an active, engaged companion.

Josie was adopted over a year ago at Wayside Waifs, she is a 2 year old Australian shepherd mix (possibly blue heeler). She is a very sweet girl who’s really affectionate/ outgoing and loves people. She loves to burn off energy by going on walks and doing enrichment activities, unfortunately we are not able to home as much to give her all the attention and care she needs and are looking to find her a loving home and that can give her the best life possible!

Story
Approx. DOB: 3/15/25                 Approx Weight: 35pds Adoption Fee:      includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! Jimmy looks to be Border collie and Heeler mix but he could also have some Pointer also. It's all a guess. Jimmy is a really well behaved young boy. You might expect to find these breeds of dogs with a lot of boundless energy but he is a very neutral kind of boy. Loves to play with all sizes of dogs and loves to be around people without wanting to jump up on anyone. Jimmy is such a great size of dog. He would be great for most any family. He is a well behaved fella in the home. At the moment we don't know if he is housebroken because we are lacking on foster homes so he is staying in our small boarding facility. He keeps his area clean so hopefully that's a good sign. He has been neutered crated a couple of times and did great.     Jimmy is a really quiet boy. We have only heard him bark when a stranger approached. When other dogs are barking at everything in sight he just stays observant without the ruckus.  He has walked well on a leash for us and never tries to jump up on us. He keeps all 4 feet grounded. Fill out that app today to meet this gorgeous boy.    I have been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative, wormed and microchipped.  If you are interested in adopting me, please complete the adoption application located at www.furrykidsrefuge.org/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible. Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient.  You can drop off donations at our weekly adoption events at the Lee's Summit Petco (1860 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO), Saturdays only from 11am to 2:00 p.m.  Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.  Would you like to foster a Furry Kid? Furry Kids' Refuge will supply the food & vet care while you supply the basic house rules & love.......win-win for all!!  Just visit our website http://www.furrykidsrefuge.org/category/fostering/  for more information. Thanks for your support! COURTESY LISTINGCOURTESY LISTINGPlease see below for contact information. Maizy is a sweet 3 1/2 year old Border Collie mix (approx. 50 lbs.) who is looking for a family that can keep up with her high energy.  She would do best in a home with no cats or small dogs.  Maizy is still working on manners so a home with children over the age of 12 years would be best.  Adoption fee: $200 Please email angelsleftbehind@yahoo.com or call Paula at 816-805-9367 if you interested in meeting Maizy. Story
DOB:  12/7/19                         Approx Weight: 38 Lbs, Adoption Fee: $200 includes 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness. Cody is a Border Collie/Australian Cattle dog mix and is almost five years old. A very loyal dog, he is also very smart, and he wants to please his people (he does have a goofy side too). He went through D.O.G. Obedience training in September, and knows sit, down, come, stay, place, and spin. He is housebroken, and also crate trained but is very good when left alone having the run of the house. Being a Border Collie mix, he is also very active and needs an owner to work/play with him often. He loves walks and gets along well with other dogs. However, he is anxious around new people and because of his anxiety, he tends to nip at new people. We had a behaviorist/trainer work with him a few months ago and she indicated that he is not aggressive and is adoptable. This is her recommendation: Cody - Nice dog! a little anxious but a super smart dog that wants to please, needs a strong confident home and handler that gives him clear and consistent direction. Having a consistent routine and a lot of constructive exercise will help with the built up energy that creates anxiety.  Reading his body language and understanding what you are seeing is extremely important, stay calm, don’t yell,  step in and redirect when you see ears forward, eyes making a hard stare and stiff body posture. Give a small verbal correction and move him to break the eye contact. Don’t let him give a hard stare! Ask people not to make direct eye contact, don’t move in on him fast, allow him to go to the people and the people not come at him directly and come over the top of him to pet, they can step to his side, allow him to sniff and get attention if he wants - respect the dog Work on teaching the “Look” command - make sure he is making contact with you when you mark and reward the behavior- if you need to lure him into looking at you, take the treat from his nose to yours- make a straight line - stand normal when doing this do not bend down to his level.  Keep working on fun productive training sessions through the day to work him mentally Management of his behavior is a must, keep him on his leash whenever new people are around. I feel an activity where he can use mental and physical energy would be a great idea. He’s a very smart dog! He will need an experienced home that understands body language, is active and has the time and commitment level to put into his behavior for sure (emphasis added).  His foster has been working on his anxiety and he’s met new people. After offering him a treat, they were able to pet him and he calmed down. One person even sat on the ground with him after petting him for several minutes and he loved it. I found this in an article about Border Collies: Border Collies are often praised for their intelligence and work ethic but are also incredibly sensitive to their surroundings and human emotions. These dogs form strong bonds with their owners and quickly pick up on emotional cues, making them responsive and intuitive companions. Border Collies can become stressed in chaotic environments, so they thrive in homes where they can enjoy structured activities and mental stimulation. He should have a fenced in backyard because he really likes to explore and run round. He would be a wonderful addition to a home where he can thrive and be active. Please, no homes with small children . Cody was adopted as a puppy from Furry Kids' Refuge and was returned for npping a family member. Due to the family having active children and a busy household he was returned. Cody has been neutered, microchipped, and heartworm tested negative and vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting/adopting one of them just fill out a application at www.furrykidsrefuge.org, click on the 'Adopt A Dog' icon and a dedicated volunteer will be in touch.
