Only 41 lb, this very handsome boy is listed as a chow mix, but may be related to a number of similar looking sweet chow/border collie looking mixes who were saved a few months back from this very shelter, and had similar border collie markings, but were also part chow. Carson is estimated to be 4 years old, although he looks even younger in video we just obtained.
He was apparently walked into the shelter on 9/11 by someone claiming to have found him as a stray. He has been now vaccinated and microchipped, and can return for a neuter. Please watch his adorable video of this friendly, happy boy.
Sadly, at this very full shelter, though, due to developing an upper respiratory infection on 9/15- that is already being treated with antibiotics- this dear boy was suddenly placed on a on a very short deadline to exit. The shelter may only consider an extension of time IF they have a confirmed adoption or rescue placement and plan by then. Otherwise, they have already told us no extensions will be granted.
While he had no apparent serious medical issues, purulent nasal discharge was noted on 9/15 and he was placed on antibiotics (Doxy and azithromycin for 10 days). A complete copy of his medical notes may be requested and or are available on this link, Lancaster Animal Care Center | Trello .
The shelter told us, “Carson came to the Care Center as a stray, so at this time there is no way to link him to any other dogs previously impounded at Lancaster. He received a medical handling score of 2 at intake, which means he does not require a behavior assessment. Additionally, he is currently being treated for CIRDC, so he is not able to be assessed at this time.
Unfortunately, we are unable to grant any extensions for Carson due to his current medical condition. While CIRDC is treatable, if it is prolonged it can progress into a more serious illness, which is why it is important for him to have a positive outcome as soon as possible. As always, in order to grant an extension, we need to be contacted directly by the head of a rescue or an adopter with a confirmed and reasonable exit plan.
Please reach out to the Lancaster Animal Care Center by the end of the business day on 09/23/26.Due to our high influx of animals coming into the Care Center as well as a higher-than-normal population of dogs, no extensions will be given to animals without a confirmed exit plan with a date and time from a rescue contact or private party. Third parties will not be considered as an exit plan. If any further information is needed or an exit plan with a commitment from a rescue or a private adopter needs to be provided, contact the Lancaster Animal Care Center for any of these animals by email at: dacclancasterrescue@animalcare.lacounty.gov “and note his ID on the subject line and that you would like to rescue or adopt.
Since he is adoptable, rescue may not need to be partnered, and can usually do a one time pull as a courtesy. Please also call the shelter asap at (562) 972-9036 and (661) 940-4191 (rescue line)

Due to his urgency, he may need a rescue though, and thus a foster, as most rescues need a place for a dog to go! Therefore, if you can potentially foster, or foster to adopt, through a rescue, or if you need further help, please contact robinmorgan@cox.net or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network asap. We can refer you to a rescue group to hopefully save him in time.
