Meet Olaf
Olaf is a resilient, loyal boy with a remarkable backstory. He was found after falling through ice and was thankfully pulled to safety by a passerby. After spending two months in the shelter and a month in foster care, Olaf has shown both his incredible devotion to his people and the importance of the right structure and environment for him to thrive.
Olaf is deeply bonded to his humans and is a true “shadow dog” — he wants to be wherever his people are and will follow you from room to room just to stay close. With his family, he is an affectionate, playful love bug who adores toys of all kinds. He especially enjoys fetch and tug-of-war, and he will happily entertain himself or engage with his people. Stuffed toys don’t last long in his world—he enjoys “deconstructing” them with enthusiasm. He is not a destructive chewer otherwise and can be trusted outside of a crate when appropriately settled in.
He is crate trained for sleep and meals and does well with structure and routine. Olaf has good recall when going outside for potty breaks and is very engaged with his handler once he trusts you. He is also extremely strong and continues to improve with leash training.
Olaf does have strong guarding instincts in the home and with his people, which is a known trait in his breed type. He is best managed with proper decompression, structure, and continued training. He is most successful when meeting new people outside of the home first and when introductions are slow and intentional. He does not do well with rushed introductions or being placed into high-stimulation environments too quickly. With time, guidance, and consistency, his guarding tendencies can be worked with and reduced.
Due to his previous experiences, Olaf was returned after it was determined he would benefit from additional decompression time and structured training before being expected to navigate busy social situations or extended visits in new environments. He thrives when his boundaries are respected and he is given the time he needs to adjust.
Olaf needs an experienced, confident dog owner—someone familiar with large, dominant breeds and comfortable providing calm, consistent leadership. He is not recommended for first-time giant breed owners. An adult-only home or one with older, dog-savvy children is best. A fenced yard is strongly recommended, or alternatively, a very dedicated adopter committed to structured daily walks and exercise to help him burn energy.
He may do best as an only dog, or with very slow, carefully managed introductions if other dogs are present. His adopter should be prepared to continue training focused on structure, boundaries, and guarding behaviors.
Olaf is not a “plug and play” dog—but for the right person, he is incredibly loyal, affectionate, and deeply rewarding. Once he trusts you, he gives his whole heart.
