Story
How this pet arrived:Pookie was brought in by her previous owner on June 3, 2026.Why this pet is the one for you:Pookie is a sensitive and independent cat who is looking for a calm, patient home where she can settle in at her own pace. She has a history of fearful behavior in loud or busy environments, and while she has been nervous during her time in our care, she has remained tolerant of handling and has been slowly warming up to staff. Pookie will do best in a quiet household with children ages 8 and older and minimal changes to her routine. We recommend an extended confinement period when she first goes home, allowing her to adjust in a smaller, secure space while her adopters spend time sitting with her, playing, and offering high-value treats such as Churu to help build trust and confidence. Pookie has also shown an interest in being outdoors; however, if her future family plans to allow her outdoor access, it is essential that she remain indoors for a minimum of 4-6 weeks after adoption so she has adequate time to bond with her new home and family. Pookie is required to go home in a hard-sided plastic carrier. With patience, consistency, and a peaceful environment, Pookie has the potential to continue blossoming into a wonderful companion.Shy/Fearful Cat: Pookie requires a virtual behavior consult, please watch THIS video to learn more about them. Story
How this pet arrived: Staten Island was brought in by a community member on May 22, 2026.Why this pet is the one for you:Meet Staten Island! Staten is still learning how to interact with the world! Because of this, he can be a bit shy when meeting new people. The way to Staten's heart is through lots of positive interactions, gentle encouragement, and patience while he warms up to you. He will need to be kept in a small, quiet room at first as he settles into his new home and should be allowed to go at his own pace. Staten would do best in a home without the hustle and bustle of young children and to a home who is able to understand his need for a calm, respectful environment. It is required that Staten be adopted to a home that already has an established friendly, cat-social resident cat, kitten or one of his littermates to help him build confidence and feel secure. Just think of the special bond you'll share because you helped Staten come out of his shell! Please be sure to bring a secure cat carrier for a safe ride home!Shy/Fearful Cat: Staten requires a virtual behavior consult, please watch THIS video to learn more about them. Story
How this pet arrived:Gemini was brought in by a community member on June 12, 2026.Why this pet is the one for you:Say hello to Gemini! This sensitive and observant girl is looking for a patient home where she can settle in at her own pace. Because Gemini values her personal space, any children in the home should be at least 6 years old. She may initially feel fearful while acclimating to new surroundings or being handled for transport, so providing a quiet, predictable environment will help her build confidence. It is important to watch for signs of overstimulation or discomfort, such as dilated pupils, skin rippling, a twitching tail, or sudden rapid movements. To keep her feeling safe, keep petting sessions brief and gentle, allowing for frequent pauses so she can choose to continue. To prevent her from becoming overwhelmed, please keep playtime and social petting as separate activities. With a consistent routine and respect for her boundaries, Gemini will truly shine. Please remember to bring a secure cat carrier for a safe ride to her new home.Shy/Fearful Cat:Gemini requires a virtual behavior consult, please watch THIS video to learn more about them.Overstimulated Cat:Gemini requires a virtual behavior consult, please watch THIS video to learn more about them. Story
How this pet arrived: Henry was brought in by a community member on November 12, 2025. Why this pet is the one for you:Meet Henry! Henry is a sweet guy with a slow-to-warm-up, then total sidekick vibe. At first, he may give you the classic polite nod from across the room, but once he decides you're trustworthy, he leans right in for all the head scratches. Being carried? Absolutely not on his agenda. But sprawling in a sunny spot like a tiny lion on vacation? Now that is his specialty. Henry is on the lookout for a home where he can chill out, claim the best sunbeams and quietly supervise life's activities. He brings calm energy, soft paws and excellent sunbathing skills to the table. He does have a quiet heart murmur, so we recommend following up with your vet to keep him happy and healthy. If you're ready for a mellow buddy with a sprinkle of charm and a strong appreciation for relaxation, Henry might be the cat for you. When it's time to bring him home, don't forget a large, secure carrier - Henry appreciates a safe, roomy ride! At SDHS:This pet has been vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. This pet is now ready for adoption! Primary Color: Blue Weight: 13.6 Age: 10yrs 8mths 0wks
