Story
Meet Lexi! Sweet and adventurous Lexi lost her home when her owner passed away. She landed in a shelter and was adopted again, only for that owner to pass away suddenly also. Lexi is now in a loving foster home and once again looking for a loving home to spend her golden years in. This sweet little fur ball is very gentle and easygoing. She is believed to be about 12 or 13 years old and weighs 9 pounds. Calm, friendly, and remarkably resilient; Lexi was living in her forever home for two years when her person suddenly passed away. She was also happily sharing her new home with another small dog. She is quite friendly—but also very much a cuddle bug who wants to nap next to you. She enjoys meeting new people and other dogs, though she at times vocalizes her greetings to some dogs from afar. Lexi recently had a dental cleaning. She has 8 bottom teeth left but has no problem eating softened kibble and soft foods. Lexi has blossomed in her foster home, showing lots of her spunky personality. She loves playing fetch, likes to roll around on the floor, and gets very excited to go on walks to sniff. She is adventurous, curious, and very kind. She loves people and would like to be near them all the time. She can struggle with being left alone and will cry if left alone for long. This will need continued patience and work. We have not seen her with cats.  She is an easy companion with the calm maturity of an older dog and modest exercise needs making her a great fit for a calm household or someone looking for a loving, sweet companion content to be near her people. She is potty and leash trained. Regular grooming will keep her lush double coat looking great. Lexi is now freshly groomed, feeling fantastic and eager to find a stable, loving home where she can continue to thrive. Lexi's adoption fee is $195. You can submit an application via our website savinggreatanimals.org   We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495.  Thank you for stepping up to save a life! To expedite to meet with this dog, please go to our site at www.savinggreatanimals.org and fill out an application. We look at the first applications to arrive, so we hope to hear from you soon! Story
Meet Vivi! Vivi is a bright, energetic 1 year old pup who is always ready for fun! She loves to chase and wrestle with her dog friends or play an enthusiastic game of fetch with her humans. On walks, she enjoys taking in all the scents of the world and thrives with a good balance of exercise, playtime, and mental enrichment through puzzle toys. This smart girl is eager to learn and highly food-motivated, making her a quick study with training. Vivi is already potty trained, crate trained, and she’s progressing with clicker training for recall and correcting behaviors like barking at the mail carrier and people walking by. The same training is being used during walks when we see other dogs. Vivi also barks when visitors first come in, but she warms up fast—usually a treat and a few pets are all she needs to relax. Vivi can become uncomfortable if she feels cornered or trapped or you try to take something of high value from her. In those moments, she may growl or snap to communicate that she needs space. Vivi mostly needs help with regulation. She is easily over-aroused and can get over-stimulated. We are working with her and she is super smart and pick things up easily. We would like to see her in a home with someone dedicated to help her continue to learn. While she’s not a total lapdog, Vivi loves being near her people — often stretching out across your legs or resting close by. She’ll make a wonderful companion for someone who appreciates an intelligent, playful dog who’s always up for an adventure. We would prefer to see her in a family with kids over 12 only. Vivi needs to be in a home with a yard. She is an alert barker which is not suitable for an apartment. She should be in a cat-free home. Vivi is vaccinated, chipped and spayed. Her adoption fee is $450 We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495.  Thank you for stepping up to save a life! To expedite to meet with this dog, please go to our site at www.savinggreatanimals.org and fill out an application. We look at the first applications to arrive, so we hope to hear from you soon! Story
Cotton Age: 3 years Sex: Spayed Female Breed: Maltese Terrier mix Color: White / Beige Weight: 8 kg (17.6 lbs) Height: 36 cm (shoulder height)   Rescue Story Cotton was rescued from an extreme animal hoarding situation where over 230 dogs were being kept in poor conditions. Despite her past, Cotton is a gentle and affectionate little girl who still loves people and seeks comfort from humans. Special Note: Congenital Deafness (born deaf)     ‍ Human Social Skills Cotton is very friendly and affectionate. She approaches both familiar people and strangers, enjoys rubbing against them, and allows easy handling. She can be comfortably picked up and will even show her belly once she bonds with you.   She is good with children under 13, but because she is deaf, she may get startled by sudden movements or unexpected touches.   Dog Social Skills Cotton will greet unfamiliar dogs but doesn’t really play with them. She generally prefers dogs similar to her size and feels overwhelmed by high-energy dogs.   Although she’s not very interested in other dogs, she has lived with many dogs before and may feel anxious if she is the only dog in the home.   Cats Cotton has passed her cat test and is currently being fostered in a home with cats. She usually ignores them, but sometimes at night, if she suddenly sees a cat’s shadow, she may get scared and bark.   Energy Level Low energy. Cotton loves to rest and sleep most of the day. Because she is deaf, once she falls asleep, she tends to sleep very deeply and for long periods.   Walks Cotton doesn’t have much walking experience yet, so she’s still learning. She generally follows her handler well, but if she feels scared, she may pull on the leash to move away from what’s frightening.   Other Behaviors & Notes • No resource guarding with people or dogs. • Very quiet at the center, but after moving to foster, she showed separation anxiety and howled for about 3 days. • After training, she can now stay alone (with another dog present) for over 3 hours calmly. • She sleeps in the same space as people but not right next to them. • Still struggling with crate training — she becomes anxious and barks when she can’t see people. • No car sickness, but she is scared of getting into the car and needs to be carried in. • Currently uses both pee pads indoors and outdoor potty.   Ideal Home Cotton would do best in a calm, patient home that understands deaf dogs and can communicate using visual cues and consistency. A home with another gentle dog may help her feel more secure.   She is a sweet, quiet soul who just needs time, stability, and love to truly blossom Apply to adopt or foster: https://adoptmekr.org Please also visit our Facebook and Instagram! Story
Echo Age: 2 years Sex: Neutered male Breed: Maltese/Terrier mix Color: White Weight: 9.1 kg (20 lbs) Height: 38 cm (15 in)   Echo is deaf (he cannot hear). He relies on visual cues and human guidance, and stays very attentive to his person.   Rescue Story: Echo was rescued from an animal hoarding situation where over 230 dogs were being kept.   Human Socialization   Echo is a very affectionate and friendly boy. He approaches both familiar people and strangers, rubs against them, and enjoys being petted. He likes both men and women and does well with children under 13 (he simply shows little interest). He is comfortable being picked up, and once he bonds with you, he loves showing his belly for rubs   Dog Socialization   Echo is friendly with both familiar and unfamiliar dogs and happily goes up to greet them. He doesn’t quite know how to “play properly” yet and mostly just runs around excitedly. He is not afraid of larger dogs, though he usually prefers dogs of similar size. If another dog provokes him, he tends to avoid conflict and gets along well without issues. After playtime, he usually likes to rest in his own quiet space.   Cats   His reaction to cats has not been observed yet, but a cat test can be arranged.   Energy Level   Low energy. Echo is a calm dog who enjoys relaxing and resting most of the time   Walks   Echo only recently started going on walks, so he is still learning to explore and sniff around. However, he walks nicely without pulling and follows his human well. Since he is deaf, he relies heavily on visual cues and tends to stay close and attentive to his handler.   Other Behaviors   Echo does not resource guard food with either people or dogs and is not particularly food-motivated.   Because he was born and raised among many dogs, he has some baseline separation anxiety. When first placed in a new environment—especially since he is deaf—he may feel anxious if he cannot see his person. In the past, he showed behaviors like scratching walls, the floor, or tearing pee pads.   However, once he adjusts, he becomes very relaxed, sleeps well, and can stay alone comfortably. He rarely barks and is currently doing both indoor pee pad training and outdoor potty.   Foster History   • First foster home: About 2 weeks. No howling when left alone, but scratched at closed doors. • Second foster home: About 1.5 months. Did well staying alone. • Current: Staying at the AKR Center.   Echo is a gentle, quiet, and loving soul. He may need a little patience during the initial adjustment period, but once he feels safe, he becomes an incredibly easy and calm companion who just wants to stay close to his person. Story
Rita is an adorable, friendly, spunky little 7lb bundle of joy! She gets along with anyone and everyone. She loves to give kisses and be as close to her humans as possible at all times! She is pretty high energy and would do best with a young, active owner commited to getting this girl exercise and socialization. She would not do well at home alone all day while her owner is at work, for example. Rita is located in Houston TX and will not be transported until she is adopted. The adopter is responsible for paying for her transport in addition to the adoption fee. The adoption fee is $850. The first step is to fill out an application at www.recycleddogsrescue.org No inquiries will be responded to - only completed applications.

Story
Sailor is such a sweet little girl and perfect in every way. She is still quite scared and still shivers sometimes, but she is also brave and curious. In the beginning she finally drank some water and started to eat a few bites of soft food. She's was still trying to process this huge change in her life and was kind of frozen. She would stay still in one spot until she was moved. She didn't get up to pee, drink water or do anything. Day, she is eating more food and she is exposing her new environment. She even barked for the first time! She has been going potty outside and even to explore outside, sniffing everything. She had a play date with two Maltese dogs. She did get up to check them out and was friendly. Every day she takes small steps eating more food, drinking water, relieving herself and exploring. He curiosity is showing more every day. She is putting lots of energy into trying new things and becoming less shy. -----

A Quick but Important Note to All Adopters:
Please remember that none of our dogs arrive fully trained. Most come from tough or uncertain beginnings and may have never lived in a home or known basic routines. That means:

✧ They are not potty trained on arrival. Most dogs regress in potty training when moving to a new environment.

✧ They may lack basic manners (like leash walking or appropriate chewing).

✧ They’re learning, growing, and doing their best—but they will need patience, structure, and compassion to succeed.

The majority of these pups have lived in the confinement of a cage or kennel run for most - if not all - of their lives. Because of this, we strongly discourage the use of crates for anything other than vehicle transport. They deserve the chance to decompress and learn what true freedom and comfort feel like.

Our amazing foster homes work hard to start these dogs on the right path, but they are rescues, not finished products. These dogs need time, consistency, and a loving home willing to meet them where they are.

Also, breed designations are our best guesses based on appearance and behavior. We can't guarantee breed, size, adult weight, or coat type.
