TOFFEE APPLICATIONS PAUSED! We’ve received so many applications for Toffee, so we’re pausing new applications for now. Please check out our other adoptable dogs too — so many amazing pups are still waiting!   Meet Toffee — A Sweet, People-Loving Little Gentleman!   Name: Toffee Age: 7 years old Sex: Neutered Male Breed: Maltese / Poodle Mix Colour: Brown Weight: 3.8 kg (8.4 lbs) Height: 28 cm (11 in) at the shoulder   Rescue Story   Toffee was found wandering around an apartment complex and was brought to a municipal shelter. He is now looking for a loving forever home where he can enjoy plenty of affection and companionship.   Personality & People   Toffee is a very friendly and affectionate little guy who genuinely loves people. He happily approaches both familiar faces and strangers, rubs against them for attention, and is comfortable being touched and handled.   He can easily be picked up with an arm under his belly and will even show his belly to people he has just met. He’s the type of dog who would much rather be close to his humans than off doing his own thing.   With Other Dogs   Toffee will approach unfamiliar dogs to say hello, but he generally isn’t interested in playing with them. He definitely prefers people over dogs.   He can feel intimidated by larger or high-energy dogs and will usually avoid them. He also doesn’t appreciate dogs who repeatedly pester him to play, so a home where his personal space is respected would suit him best.   With Cats   Toffee’s reaction to cats has not yet been observed, but a cat test can be arranged upon request.   Energy Level   Toffee has a moderate energy level. He enjoys getting outside and being active, but after his outdoor time, he is happy to settle down and relax quietly.   Walking   Toffee is an experienced and enjoyable walking companion. He loves going for walks, follows his handler well, and generally walks nicely without pulling on the leash.   Other Behaviours   • No food guarding toward people or other dogs • Generally calm when placed in a kennel, but if he makes eye contact with someone, he may whine or bark to ask to be let out • Primarily does his business outdoors    Health Note:Toffee recently had a dental cleaning and 9 teeth extracted due to poor dental condition when he was rescued. He is currently eating dry kibble without any issues. Other than his dental condition, we have not been informed of any other health concerns at this time.   Toffee would be a wonderful match for someone looking for a small, affectionate companion who enjoys walks but is equally happy relaxing by your side. At 7 years old, he’s past the puppy stage and knows exactly what he loves most: his people. Apply to adopt or foster: https://adoptmekr.org  PLEASE ALSO VISIT OUR FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM! Story
Coco is a female Maltese who recently came into my care from a previous owner. I have made sure she received all necessary medical attention. She is fully up-to-date on all her vaccines and just underwent a successful spay and umbilical hernia removal surgery. Her medical care has been fully covered, and she is on her way to being physically healthy!Unfortunately, due to her past living environment, Coco has developed severe food resource guarding. She becomes highly reactive, defensive, and will snap or bite when food or treats are present. Because I have a young child and another dog, it has become an unsafe environment for both my family and Coco. She is currently highly stressed by the bustling activity of a multi-pet and child household. Coco MUST go to a quiet, adult-only home (preferably a single person) with NO young children and NO other pets. She needs an experienced, patient owner who understands resource guarding and can provide strict boundaries.

Story
Waffle is a small dog- about 17lbs- with a big personality and an even bigger need for the right forever home. While he may be adorable, Waffle is not the type of dog who will thrive in just any environment. He is looking for a patient, experienced, dog-savvy adopter committed to helping him continue building confidence and trust. https://youtu.be/aaybwp6jqjI Waffle is estimated to be about 2 years old. Our best guess is that he may be a Maltipoo mix, though as always with rescue, breed and birthday are simply our best guess. Waffle was left behind with two other dogs after his owner was deported, and that experience understandably left him insecure and unsure of the world around him. Because of this, Waffle takes time to warm up to new people and environments. He is not the kind of dog who will immediately shower strangers with affection, but with patience, structure, and consistency, he is capable of forming very strong bonds with his people. Waffle absolutely needs another younger dog in his forever home — ideally a confident dog around his age and similar size who can handle his rough-and-tumble play style, occasional reactivity, and active personality. He relies heavily on other dogs for confidence and comfort, and another dog is essential to helping him feel secure and continue making progress. His ideal home will have: • A securely fenced physical yard (no apartments, condos, or invisible fences) • Another young, confident dog in the home • Experienced adopters familiar with nervous or reactive dogs • A structured environment with boundaries and routine • Patience and realistic expectations during decompression Waffle is vocal, especially when uncertain, so shared-wall living is not appropriate for him. He is also still working on leash skills and can bark at unfamiliar people and dogs on walks. Keeping his world small at first and allowing him to slowly build trust will be very important for his success. Despite his challenges, Waffle has so much potential in the right home. He enjoys playtime, exploring the yard, and being with his dog friends. He is also cat friendly! Watching him slowly learn to trust and feel safe is incredibly rewarding, and the right family will see a side of Waffle that most people never get the chance to experience. Because of his needs, Waffle is not a fit for first-time dog owners or households looking for an easygoing social butterfly. He needs a committed family willing to meet him where he is and help him continue growing into the dog he is meant to be. For serious adopters, we would also be happy to connect you not only with his foster, but with our behavior team to help ensure a successful transition into his forever home. Story
Meet Gidget! Hi! I’m Gidget. I’m a smart, friendly, trusting and calm 2 year old (poodle/terrier??) bundle of love who adores my special people. I love to cuddle on the couch and could do that all day.  I started my life in a hoarding situation where I lived outside with lots of other pups. But I’m super duper resilient and have already learned to live inside a house, sleep and eat in a crate, and, I don’t want to brag, but I taught myself how to do stairs on my first try (with just a little encouragement from my foster mom). And I never have accidents in the house! There’s nothing I can’t learn and I’m eager to be the smartest pup around! So far I’ve mastered “sit”, I understand the gentle “uh huh” sound I hear when I need to stop doing something, and I’m getting pretty good at “wait” at the door. I’ve even learned to fetch toys. And all that in just a little over 2 short weeks! I love, love, love walks and even do a cute prancing thing when I’m out in the wilds of my neighborhood. My humans love it! And did you see my fabulous ears? Yep, they bounce when I prance! I do sometimes get nervous when I see people or dogs on our walks. When that happens I give a little bark and maybe even a growl, but my foster mom gently lets me know everything is ok and I relax and trust her. I’m content with a short out and back or a long walk, whatever you want. I’ve been on one hike so far and really liked it!  Even though I used to live with lots of dogs,I don’t mind when my foster mom leaves me home alone, especially when she comes back from the store with treats. Who doesn’t love treats? What makes me happy you ask? First and foremost, YOU! And as I’ve already boasted, I love walks, hanging with my human anywhere, kisses, hugs, belly rubs…you get it. I can be a real cuddle monster and will even follow you around the house. Although I don’t get to sleep on the bed where I am now, I would love to sleep on yours! If that’s not ok, I’ll be good in a crate. I’m pretty chill about that stuff.  I’ve been told that sometimes I don’t share my people well (and maybe other stuff) with my dog friends in the house. That’s probably true… I do like other dogs but I prefer to hang with humans. Humans are the best. I’ve never met a cat but I do find squirrels intriguing when they run. My foster mom thinks that I could do well with a cat who knows how to teach me manners. You know what they say, “Dogs drool and cats rule!”  My foster mom wants me to share with you that because I’m still learning to share my person and other stuff, I might do better with tweens and older kids. But, as I’ve already gloated, I’m smart, a quick study and motivated to learn, so if you have youngsters like me and you’re good at teaching me stuff, we might be able to work something out!  So, that’s me in a nutshell. Oh, I forgot to mention, I’ve been told sometimes I have a cute little snore when I sleep and am having fun dreams. And dreams make my big ears twitch!  Gidget is vaccinated, spayed and chipped. Her adoption fee is $450 We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495.  Thank you for stepping up to save a life! To expedite to meet with this dog, please go to our site at www.savinggreatanimals.org and fill out an application. We look at the first applications to arrive, so we hope to hear from you soon!
