Here is what her foster has to say! “ Hi, I’m Penelope! I’m a beautiful Pitbull Terrier with a big heart, an even bigger personality—and I’m happy to say I’m now super healthy and heartworm‑free! I’ve got plenty of energy for walks, playtime, and fun, but I also know how to relax and enjoy quality time with my people. I’m fully potty trained and very food‑motivated, which makes me eager to learn and respond well to training. I should admit, though, that I can be a little sneaky—if food is left on the counter, I might think it’s a snack just for me, and I do enjoy checking out low garbage cans—I love a good treasure hunt! But with a little supervision and structure, I do just fine. Being crate trained helps keep me safe and out of trouble when I’m home alone—but it’s my safe space too. One of my favorite things in the world is cuddling. I love being petted, snuggling, and soaking up all the affection I can get—especially belly rubs! I get along with other dogs, but cats aren’t really my thing. Hard pass. But if you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate, fun‑loving companion who will keep you smiling and give you endless love, I might just be your perfect match. I have had the pleasure of fostering sweet “Lisa”aka now Dakota for the last month. This beautiful 2 1/2 year old Terrier-Pitbull is 50lbs of pure love & fun. She is great with people & other dogs. There isn’t a toy that she doesn’t want to play with.She keeps herself very busy.Sits at command & working with giving a paw. No problem at night when I crate her. Usually after a short trip for her last outside visit…she is in bed by 9:30-10:00 & up & ready to go by 6-6:30 a.m. Almost completely housebroken…a accident here & there. Loves to eat…watch out for your shoes!! Dakota loves her walks & is wonderful on a leash. She is an amazing dog & in time will be perfection!

Away from the shelter, Squidy's true self shines. She wiggles with happiness all the time. If she knows you, she looks you right in the eyes with such a joyful look. There aren’t many beings in the world who will look at you like Squiddy does. She appreciates everything you do with her and she wiggles to show you. She takes to new people instantly. One volunteer brings her home every week, so we know quite a bit about her behavior away from the shelter. She’s easy to get hooked up, and she is cooperative in the car. It’s quite impressive because she is SO happy to see you and to be going with you, but she calmly allows you to leash her up and hook her in the car. She plays hard outside, but inside the house, she behaves well. Although it’s impossible to know whether she is houstetrained, she has had no accidents in the home. She also has volunteers who take her for longs walks in the woods, which she loves of course. Generally, she doesn’t pull hard. Instead, she takes her time because she is quite the sniffer. In person, she is beautiful with her brindled coat. She is very dark though, so photos just don’t do her justice. You have to meet her! She needs a home where she is the only dog, but that’s OK because she has plenty of love to share all be herself. She is so loved by one volunteer that he sponsored her adoption fee!

Meet Mateo—your future best friend with a story that truly shows what resilience looks like. Mateo is a proud Puerto Rican pup who made his journey to the mainland about two years ago through a rescue. Since then, he’s experienced more change than any dog should—multiple foster homes, an adoption, and most recently, being surrendered again. Through it all, Mateo has never lost his spark. Today, he’s safe with Border Tails Rescue, just waiting for the one thing he’s never truly had: a forever home that sticks. At around 4–5 years old, Mateo is full of life, personality, and charm. He’s a happy, goofy boy who loves attention and isn’t shy about asking for it—he’ll happily “chat” with you to let you know what’s on his mind. His energy level is higher than average for his age, so he’ll do best with an experienced owner who can provide structure, consistency, and plenty of outlets for exercise and enrichment. Mateo thrives in calmer environments, so a suburban or rural home is ideal. City life is a bit too overwhelming for him, as loud noises and constant activity can make him anxious. He has a strong prey drive, which means a home without cats is a must. The good news? He does very well with other dogs and enjoys having canine companions, though he may need some guidance on leash when he gets overstimulated. Mateo is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm, and Border Tails Rescue will support his medical needs during this time. Despite this, he continues to show just how resilient and joyful he is every single day. While he has previously lived with children, we’re still learning what kind of family setup suits him best now. What we do know is that Mateo is thriving in his current foster home in a quiet, country setting—and it’s given us a glimpse of the happy, balanced dog he can be in the right environment. Mateo isn’t just looking for a home—he’s looking for someone who understands him, believes in him, and is ready to give him the stability and love he’s been missing. In return, he’ll give you loyalty, laughter, and a bond like no other.
