Story
History: Loretta is a beautiful girl who found herself at an overcrowded rural shelter and was very pregnant. She had her puppies just days prior to coming to rescue and they settled into their foster home with us very quickly. Her puppies are stocky, pudgy kiddos with unique personalities of their very own! Momma Loretta has been an amazing dog and has recently taken on 3 Great Dane puppies as a surrogate for Momma Lavender who had 15 puppies and could not produce enough milk for them all. She was so patient with them and took them in as her own- she is the very best girl! A Note from the Foster: Etta is an unusually "chill" dog when she's relaxed. She's content to lay around much of the time. Yet she will show spurts of energy which are puppy-like and funny to watch. Every day at some time, she gets playful. It’s like the “downward dog” challenging another dog to play. She will, against our rule, run into the bedroom and jump onto the bed and get in the downward dog challenge, knowing we’ll tell her to get off. She does just that, runs into another room and back into the bedroom for round 2! We’re learning to keep a gate across the doorway. Etta is very loving, adores being petted on her head and ears, and will "shake" a paw at you for more! And, she sometimes “talks” to you! She loves being brushed. Most nights she puts herself to sleep in her kennel, the door is left open. She is VERY food/treat driven, and will do almost anything for you with a treat. She LOVES car rides, and gets along respectfully well with her 14 year old resident dog sister. We have not encountered cats. She can also be stubborn, and wait a bit to “come” on her own time. A gentle but firm clear voice, and giving her wait time, works best. She is never really "hyper." A definite PLUS. The MUST HAVES for a new owner: 1. Willingness to work to have a rapport with her, it's not likely to be automatic. Once you have a rapport, you have a lifelong friend. 2. Watchful understanding of the signs of her insecurity/anxiousness, tightly tucked tail. Loud noises, quick movements and a leash in hand can be startling for her. Etta is sometimes “mouthy” wanting to put her mouth around your hand or arm for example. She may chew some cardboard or plastic but doesn’t eat it. * Etta is working on forgetting she was mistreated. (A male human, likely wearing a plaid flannel shirt and beating her with a leash). We don’t observe hesitation (while trying to put a leash on her) response much anymore. 3. Willingness to continue to teach her positive behaviors.

Story
History: Barry has been diagnosed with a congenital defect called pulmonic stenosis (PS). PS is a condition in which the pulmonic valve is abnormally formed, creating an obstruction of blood flow from the right heart to the lungs. This then causes the right heart to have to work harder to push blood to the lungs, which in turn causes enlargement and thickening of the right heart. Due to the severity of Barry's pulmonic stenosis, Barry had surgical intervention to open the pulmonary valve to reduce the obstruction and lessen the amount of work that the right side of his heart must do daily. This was performed in April 2025 by the University of Minnesota Veterinary Cardiology surgeons. The average reduction in the pressure gradient with balloon Valvuloplasty is reported to be approximately 50-60%. In Barry’s case, they were able to decrease the pressure gradient by 53%. Barry’s original pressure gradient was around 170 mmHg, and the pressure gradient following surgery was around 80 mmHg and last checked (6 months post-op) his was about 90 mmHg. At this pressure gradient, Barry still falls within the severe category but very close to the cutoff (which is 80 mmHg). The thickening to the right ventricle hopefully decreases with time and with the continued use of a beta-blocker will also help this. Barry will need a recheck echocardiogram in 6 months. An increase in pressure may indicate the need for another form of surgical intervention, which would likely include placement of a stent at the pulmonic valve. This is not indicated this time however, it may be necessary in the future. Barry will most likely need to be on lifelong heart medication. He will also need yearly echocardiograms. A Note from the Foster: Barry is a beautiful boy who has been with our family for about 6 weeks. So far he has captured our hearts with how loving, cuddly, and smart he is. He is extremely tolerant of our daughters constant hugging, smooching, and obsessive touching. I have seen his interaction with other dogs and he loves being around them but also loves having 100% of your attention too. His DNA from a sibling indicated he has American Bully, Pitbull Terrier, German Shepherd, and Alaskan Husky. He is a great mix of those breeds. He is going to be on the larger side as he is nearly 50lbs now at almost 6 months. He is a loving companion and loves being outside. He will require exercise to help maintain his great behavior and to help prolong his life. Barry has a genetic heart condition that required a heart surgery when he was younger. After a cardiology follow up it was determined he will have to remain on a heart medication for the rest of his life. He has an audible heart murmur and it was advised that he will need routine echocardiograms. In addition, it is very possible that he will require another heart surgery to place a stent. I was advised that routine exercise, medications, and a healthy diet could support him until middle age. Barry is a very intelligent boy. He knows many commands and is learning new ones almost weekly. He is potty trained, crated when we are gone, and sleeps in a dog bed all night. He does best when you are around during the day. He has been pretty clingy to me but I love it! He is my little shadow. So if you need a helper in the kitchen who is very food motivated he's your best bud.

History: Our Out of the Cold Rescue Effort was a great success in welcoming over 180+ animals to rescue from rural areas in North Dakota before the cold set in. These animals are all so deserving and thankful to get a second chance in finding a forever home of their own! A Note from the Foster: Neptune is ready to wriggle his way into your heart, and on your couch if you let him! He's hard to resist with beautiful amber-colored eyes, fur like velvet, and that adorable blocky head. This beefy boy LOVES people! He greets people of all ages with tail wags, licks, and maybe a little whine if you walk by without giving him some love. He is perfectly housetrained, goes willingly into his crate for work days and overnights and doesn't make a peep while in there! He is super smart and loves training with the kids in his foster home. He is a pro at 'sit', 'shake', and 'down' so far. He has a very soft mouth and is comfortable with people near him while he eats or chews on a bone. He has not spent time with other dogs here yet but he has shown friendly interest when greeting them through the fence. This boy is all muscle but with the right collar/harness, he is a great walking partner. He loves to play with balls, squeakers, and plush toys....but only the strongest toys will survive! He can get over-excited and jump on people or the counter if something smells interesting, but he responds well to firm and consistent redirections. For that reason, he will likely be happiest in a home without young children. We think Neptune is out of this world and we hope you will too!

History: 🧡 From Texas to Midwest 🤠—- A group of deserving dogs was recently welcomed as part of our Texas Transport Program! A program launched to make an impactful difference for our partner shelters in Texas facing the overpopulation of animals with limited resources and low adoption rates. We are excited to help these southern gems find loving forever homes to call their own! A Note from the Foster: Meet Chocolate. He is a 3 yr old pittie mix. This beefy guy would be a great addition to any family. He is a jolly guy, quick with a smile and a waggy tail. He is house broken and kennel trained. He knows sit and shake and loves to go for walks. He is great on the leash… until he comes across a smell that needs more than the passing sniff and he becomes quite immovable until all the sniffs are sniffed. I would classify him as a medium to low energy dog. He likes to play with his toys but his favorite activity is chilling on the couch with his person. He did well with other dogs, playing with the friendly ones and respectful of the ones that want to be left alone. I think he would do great with kids. He is a pretty gentle guy. Not sure about cats. He sees a neighbor cat outside and is interested but not reactive so I think he would be fine with them. He is a bit on the heavy side and should lose a few pounds so we are working on that. Can you welcome this sweet guy into your family?

These animals are all so deserving and thankful to get a second chance in finding a forever home of their own! A Note from the Foster: Hi, I'm Reuben! When I arrived at Coco's Heart my name was "JugHead" so I may not respond right away to my new name. I love to snuggle on couches while binge-watching shows. When I'm not letting you know that I need snuggles, I enjoy keeping an eye on things happening outside the window. I'm a pretty chill guy and don't really bark or jump up. You can even make me wear ugly sweaters that are slightly too tight for me. I might whine a little and will definitely wag my tail and scratch at the door if we're getting ready to go on a walk. I love walks and could use some help not pulling on the leash, but I'm not stubborn about it. Loud and fast cars make me a little nervous, so I stay pretty cautious on sidewalks next to busy streets. I am REALLY good at going potty outside and I'm not super interested in any kind of treat or toy UNLESS it's a pill pocket. Pill pockets are the best! I leave shoes alone and don't really go for anything that's just for humans. I have good self-awareness of my size unless I'm ready to sprawl on your lap and make sure you stay put until my required snuggle needs have been met. I'm not sure how I feel about other dogs or cats, but I'm pretty easy going around humans regardless of their age. Since I'm such a big guy I am taking some vitamins for arthritis in one of my legs. My head is huge and I'm excited to meet the human that is ready for me to bury it in their lap. All the time.

These animals are all so deserving and thankful to get a second chance in finding a forever home of their own! A Note from the Foster: I now have a name…my foster mom named me Sprocket and I like being called by that name! A sprocket is something that engages with something else to make it work. That is definitely ME! Add me to your family and we can work together! My first 2 years I lived in northern North Dakota and I am now living in a warm foster home. Everyone says I am strong, so they gave me a gentle leader that goes across my face and now I don’t pull my humans much. I am a very fast learner; know sit and how to shake with my paw. I am starting to understand wait and stay(unless it’s food). My foster mom says I am very food motivated and willing to learn. I am potty trained, sleep all night in a kennel, and up to date on all medical which means I am up for adoption. Oh one more thing….I am not a couch potato….I don’t even look at furniture, I like a comfy bed.

Story
A Note from the Foster: This sweet girl is looking for a forever home where she can continue her journey from puppy raising to living in a home as a beloved family member. Fallen needs an adopter who is willing to dedicate time to continue helping her learn how to go in a crate and settle in. To learn that going into her crate is a positive thing and it does not always mean humans are leaving. She isn’t excited to go into the crate and has shown us what she thinks of the standard plastic and wire crates. We are now using a special Ruffland crate and once she is in the crate, she seems relatively content with a stuffed frozen Kong, a safe chew toy, and some treats. We think that with time, training, and yummy food she will become more comfortable with this routine. This gentle girl will thrive in a patient home that understands she’s still discovering what it means to be a family dog. With patience, love, and training, Fallen will continue to blossom into the wonderful companion she was always meant to be. ❤️ Hey there, future family! My name is Fallen, but my foster family calls me “Dotty” because of my adorable spots! I currently live with my foster mom and dad, two cats, and a smaller dog. I really like ear, head, and back scratches -- who doesn’t?! I have also discovered that dog toys are lots of fun and dog treats are super yummy! What makes me extra special? My foster family seems to think I may be deaf, but I am able to hear certain things if they are loud enough or a certain pitch. They are working on teaching me some hand signals. A bit about me - I am: Dog-Friendly 🐶: I LOVE my furry foster sibling. Having another dog in the house has boosted my confidence and shown me what it’s like to be a dog. I often try to play with him, like following him around, and respond well to his cues. Cat-Friendly🐈‍⬛: I like the little furry purr machines in my foster home. One kitty is timid so she usually watches me from a distance. The other more outgoing kitty tries to play with me sometimes and even tolerates me when I try to instigate play with him. Aspiring Supervisor👀: What can I say? I am a curious girl who just wants to see what is going on. How can I help you if I don’t supervise your activities? Yard work, cooking, taste testing, folding laundry? I am here for all of it. Outdoor Enthusiast☀️🥾: I enjoy running around the fenced yard, exploring, sniffing, and sunbathing on the deck. I have been known to do zoomies when I am feeling extra silly. I would love a home with: A patient family who will continue to provide me with training and structure to help me learn hand signals and basic obedience. A fenced-in yard to help keep me safe. Humans who like a little adventure (walks, exploring, car rides) A dog companion (having a dog in my foster home has helped me to adjust and to figure out “how to dog”). My foster mom thinks I would really benefit from having another dog in the house to play with and to continue to provide guidance. If you’re looking for a sweet, loving companion and can help Fallen continue to learn and blossom, visit the CHDR website to learn more about her and our adoption process.
