Story
Maverick was one of our shelter fire survivors and is now in a foster home. Maverick loves butt scratches and is walking well on leash. He isn’t super interested in playing with toys however he will play for a bit. His previous owner seemed to just let him out in the backyard and did not teach him commands or walk him much but our staff have been working with him and now Maverick knows how to sit and really enjoys taking walks in the woods. Maverick is anxious around other dogs so he would do best in a home as an only dog. He is sensitive about anything done around his neck but we have been working with him on this and able to put a collar/leash on. He will need an owner who is experienced with working breeds and will continue to work with him on this to get him comfortable with that and to give him the structure he needs. Maverick would love to have someone give him a chance to have a home of his own. Maverick is about 6 years old and 44 pounds. Please help Maverick find a loving family of his own. We do NOT ship our animals. All adoptive families must travel to us to meet their adoptive dog/cat. Applicants must live within a 2 hour radius from Sparta/Andover (07871/07821). Please understand that we are an animal shelter and thus unable to say whether the dogs are housebroken as they are not in homes. If you are interested in adopting, we encourage you to please submit an application on our website today so that we can try and process and pre-approve any potential adopters prior to our next adoption event. Story
Opie is one of our shelter fire survivors. He was originally part of a litter found in the woods by a good Samaritan. His foster mom says: "Opie is doing so well! He loves long walks, treats, playing with his toys and giving kisses. Opie is playful, but learning how to settle down inside. He walks very nice on a leash, is friendly to other dogs and is easy to redirect. After playing and tiring himself out, he loves to cuddle up and take a nap on the couch. Opie is crate and potty trained, and he sleeps all through the night. He is very bright, knows how to sit , wait, lay down and working on some other commands." Notes: He is a little shy around men but warms up quickly (one of our male dog walkers walked him yesterday, and after a few treats, they were best buds!). His foster hasn't had any issues with resource guarding. She also thinks he would do well in a home with another dog. She says he is so good meeting other dogs and really follows their lead. Opie had initially been adopted into a home with 5 children and then returned. The chaos and noise seemed to have made him anxious so now we are looking for a quieter home for him. We do not know how what he thinks of cats. Opie is about 9 months old and 45 pounds. Please help Opie find the loving family he is looking for. Update: Opie tested positive for Ehrlicchia, a common tick borne disease similar to Lyme's. He has completed his course of treatment and is doing great. Opie is ready to go home with you! We do NOT ship our animals. All adoptive families must travel to us to meet their adoptive dog/cat. Applicants must live within a 2 hour radius from Sparta/Andover (07871/07821). Story
Chase is a 1.7-year-old, 38 lb cattle dog/pug mix (we think!) with the most incredible underbite you’ve ever seen. It gives him a goofy, one-of-a-kind look that somehow makes him even cuter. Rescued from Georgia, Chase is a friendly, happy guy who gets along great with people and other dogs. He’s easy to be around, enjoys his walks (he’s good on leash), and has a fun, playful personality without being over the top. He’s the kind of dog that will make you smile every single day—between his adorable face and his sweet, easygoing nature, he’s hard not to love. Chase is microchipped, neutered, and up to date on vaccines. April 16, 2026, 8:40 pm

Story
Our longest stay dog with the biggest heart we've ever had!  In December 2024, when Houston experienced some of its coldest nights of the year, a frightened dog was running loose through a neighborhood—alone, confused, and terrified. That dog was Brody. Brody had been abandoned. He didn’t understand why the people he once depended on were suddenly gone, and he didn’t trust anyone who tried to help. Every time someone approached, Brody ran. He refused to be touched, choosing fear over the risk of being hurt again. While families stayed warm inside their homes, Brody survived the freezing nights on his own, carrying nothing but instinct and fear. For weeks, our volunteers showed up for him—patiently, quietly, without expectations. No chasing. No pressure. Just food, gentle voices, and consistency. Slowly, Brody began to realize that these humans were different. Eventually, he allowed himself to step into a backyard where we set up heat lamps and an enclosed kennel to protect him from the cold. That kennel became his safe place. For the first time in weeks, Brody could rest without fear. He grew fond of that little space because it meant warmth, safety, and choice—things he hadn’t had in a long time. But Brody’s journey didn’t end there. He was absolutely terrified of a leash. To Brody, it felt like losing control all over again. So we went at his pace. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Every small step mattered—letting the leash be near him, touching it, standing calmly with it, learning that it didn’t mean danger. And then one day, Brody walked. Today, Brody walks on a leash—a milestone that represents so much more than movement. It represents trust. Healing. Courage. It represents a dog who once ran from every human, choosing instead to walk beside one. Brody’s story is a reminder that broken doesn’t mean hopeless, and scared doesn’t mean unlovable. Sometimes, all it takes is time, patience, and someone willing to believe. Brody believed. And now, he’s learning how to live again. Age: Approximately 3 years Size: Low profile! Short and thick Weight: About 30 lbs.  Neutered: YES Housebroken: YES Kennel Trained: YES Vaccines: Current Microchip: YES Good with dogs: YES - AMAZING! Good with cats: unknown Good with kids: If the kids are trained :) Handicap: Requires lots of snuggles! March 7, 2026, 1:56 pm
