Story
Our longest stay dog with the biggest heart we've ever had!  In December 2024, when Houston experienced some of its coldest nights of the year, a frightened dog was running loose through a neighborhood—alone, confused, and terrified. That dog was Brody. Brody had been abandoned. He didn’t understand why the people he once depended on were suddenly gone, and he didn’t trust anyone who tried to help. Every time someone approached, Brody ran. He refused to be touched, choosing fear over the risk of being hurt again. While families stayed warm inside their homes, Brody survived the freezing nights on his own, carrying nothing but instinct and fear. For weeks, our volunteers showed up for him—patiently, quietly, without expectations. No chasing. No pressure. Just food, gentle voices, and consistency. Slowly, Brody began to realize that these humans were different. Eventually, he allowed himself to step into a backyard where we set up heat lamps and an enclosed kennel to protect him from the cold. That kennel became his safe place. For the first time in weeks, Brody could rest without fear. He grew fond of that little space because it meant warmth, safety, and choice—things he hadn’t had in a long time. But Brody’s journey didn’t end there. He was absolutely terrified of a leash. To Brody, it felt like losing control all over again. So we went at his pace. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Every small step mattered—letting the leash be near him, touching it, standing calmly with it, learning that it didn’t mean danger. And then one day, Brody walked. Today, Brody walks on a leash—a milestone that represents so much more than movement. It represents trust. Healing. Courage. It represents a dog who once ran from every human, choosing instead to walk beside one. Brody’s story is a reminder that broken doesn’t mean hopeless, and scared doesn’t mean unlovable. Sometimes, all it takes is time, patience, and someone willing to believe. Brody believed. And now, he’s learning how to live again. Age: Approximately 3 years Size: Low profile! Short and thick Weight: About 30 lbs.  Neutered: YES Housebroken: YES Kennel Trained: YES Vaccines: Current Microchip: YES Good with dogs: YES - AMAZING! Good with cats: unknown Good with kids: If the kids are trained :) Handicap: Requires lots of snuggles! January 26, 2026, 12:15 pm

Story
Meet Boochie (aka Booch, aka Kombucha if you’re fancy). Boochie was adopted out in 2021 and, through absolutely no fault of her own, recently found herself back with us. Huge shout-out to her previous adopters for doing the right thing and honoring the contract — once a NorthStar dog, always a NorthStar dog. Now Boochie is ready for a fresh start and her next forever home. She’s older, wiser, and… let’s say, a bit fluffier than she was back in 2021. But don’t judge — she’s on her weight-control food, taking daily walks, and already seeing progress. New year, new Booch! Maybe she’ll even be your accountability buddy in the “healthy habits” department (you know, if you’re into that sort of thing). Boochie is around 7 years old, housebroken, crate trained, and gets along great with her foster brother (a proud NSPR alum himself). She weighs in at about 66 pounds — down from 69 just three weeks ago — so yes, she really is putting in the work! Boochie snoozes through the night in her crate like a total pro and will even hang out in there during the day with the door open. She’s also an excellent work-from-home co-worker and will quietly supervise from her spot by your desk. With other dogs, Boochie is friendly but still learning her manners — she tends to be a little extra with toys and snacks (with dogs, not humans), and her play style is very “in your face, let’s be best friends RIGHT NOW.” A chill, tolerant dog who can help teach her the ropes would be ideal. Her favorite hobby? FETCH. Capital letters absolutely necessary. For her size, she’s surprisingly active, agile, and downright enthusiastic about chasing down a tennis ball. Leash walking? Well… it’s a bit chaotic, but she’s working on that too. If Boochie’s mix of sweetness, sass, and self-improvement vibes is speaking to you, fill out an application and don’t forget to mention Boochie TX! NOTE: We have included picture of Boochie from 2021 when she was younger and, um, thinner :)January 18, 2026, 4:56 pm

Story
Introducing Cedar, a charming 7-year-old and 68 lb boy! This guy is a bundle of joy, adored by everyone he meets. Whether he's playing with people or other dogs, Cedar's loving nature shines through. He's always up for an adventure, whether it's exploring the great outdoors or snuggling up for some quality time. He rides well in the car and LOVES to play in the kiddie pool. Sadly, Cedar is in need of a new home when his owner developed allergies. Whoever adopts him will be gaining a very loyal and affectionate friend for life. He is house trained, crate trained, and all around a fun dog. Story
If you’re looking for a dog who checks every single box, Piston is your guy. At 2.5 years old and 45 lbs, he’s the perfect “just right” size — big enough for adventures, small enough for couch snuggles. Piston LOVES people of all ages and gets along beautifully with other dogs. He’s even been polite with cats! Outside, he shines as a running buddy or park explorer, so an active adult or a yard to zoom in would make him one happy pup. Inside? He’s pure chill — relaxed, respectful, and happy to nap while you go about your day. This clever boy is:  Housetrained  Crate-trained  Obedience-trained (sit, lay, and paw — nailed it!)  Neutered, vaccinated, & heartworm negative  A full-night sleeper and potty-signal pro Piston’s previous owner became ill and could no longer care for him, so he’s looking for a new family to love with that big, loyal heart of his. He’s easy, he’s sweet, he’s ready — all he needs is someone to give him his forever home. (function () { // Only on animal detail pages if (!/\/animals\/detail/i.test(location.pathname)) return; // Debounce to avoid double-fire (touchend + click, etc.) var lastNavAt = 0; function toFullSize(url) { try { var u = new URL(url, location.href); u.searchParams.delete('width'); u.searchParams.delete('height'); return u.toString(); } catch (e) { return url || ''; } } function looksLikeAnimalPhoto(url) { return /\/pictures\/animals\/\d+\/\d+\/[^?#]+\.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif)/i.test(url || ''); } function handler(e) { var el = e.target; if (!el) return; // Find the closest anchor or image in the click path var a = el.closest ? el.closest('a') : null; var img = el.closest ? el.closest('img') : null; var url = ''; // Prefer anchor href if it points to an animal photo if (a && a.getAttribute) { var href = a.getAttribute('href') || ''; if (href && (href.indexOf('/pictures/animals/') !== -1 || looksLikeAnimalPhoto(href))) { url = href; } } // Otherwise fall back to the image src if (!url && img && img.getAttribute) { var src = img.getAttribute('src') || ''; if (src && (src.indexOf('/pictures/animals/') !== -1 || looksLikeAnimalPhoto(src))) { url = src; } } if (!url) return; // Absolute URL + full-size version try { url = new URL(url, location.href).toString(); } catch (_) {} url = toFullSize(url); // Stop PrettyPhoto (and any other delegated click handlers) e.preventDefault(); e.stopPropagation(); if (e.stopImmediatePropagation) e.stopImmediatePropagation(); // Debounce var now = Date.now(); if (now - lastNavAt < 500) return; lastNavAt = now; // SAME TAB navigation to the full-size image location.href = url; } // Capture phase is the key: we get the event before PrettyPhoto. Story
Cali is a 8-year-old, 45 lb pup who has a very sad story, and one that stayed with all of us. She spent 8 years in a home with the same owner, her whole world, until he sadly passed away. No one knew for some time so Cali was left alone in the house with her deceased owner. When she was finally discovered, she was understandably terrified, confused, and heartbroken. Cali was picked up by animal control, and we were asked if we could help save her. The moment we met her, we fell in love. Is she shy? Yes. Skittish? Absolutely. But never once has she shown an ounce of aggression. Cali bonds quickly with her favorite people and, while she may always be a sensitive girl, she truly loves her humans once she feels safe. She does well with other dogs and may actually enjoy living with a canine companion. Although Cali is 8 years old, you would never know it — she still has so much life and love to give. Cali is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. Her adoption fee is $205. This incredibly sweet girl has stolen our hearts, and we know she will do the same for the right home. Apply to adopt CALI NJ at ehrdogs.org. (function () { // Only on animal detail pages if (!/\/animals\/detail/i.test(location.pathname)) return; // Debounce to avoid double-fire (touchend + click, etc.) var lastNavAt = 0; function toFullSize(url) { try { var u = new URL(url, location.href); u.searchParams.delete('width'); u.searchParams.delete('height'); return u.toString(); } catch (e) { return url || ''; } } function looksLikeAnimalPhoto(url) { return /\/pictures\/animals\/\d+\/\d+\/[^?#]+\.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif)/i.test(url || ''); } function handler(e) { var el = e.target; if (!el) return; // Find the closest anchor or image in the click path var a = el.closest ? el.closest('a') : null; var img = el.closest ? el.closest('img') : null; var url = ''; // Prefer anchor href if it points to an animal photo if (a && a.getAttribute) { var href = a.getAttribute('href') || ''; if (href && (href.indexOf('/pictures/animals/') !== -1 || looksLikeAnimalPhoto(href))) { url = href; } } // Otherwise fall back to the image src if (!url && img && img.getAttribute) { var src = img.getAttribute('src') || ''; if (src && (src.indexOf('/pictures/animals/') !== -1 || looksLikeAnimalPhoto(src))) { url = src; } } if (!url) return; // Absolute URL + full-size version try { url = new URL(url, location.href).toString(); } catch (_) {} url = toFullSize(url); // Stop PrettyPhoto (and any other delegated click handlers) e.preventDefault(); e.stopPropagation(); if (e.stopImmediatePropagation) e.stopImmediatePropagation(); // Debounce var now = Date.now(); if (now - lastNavAt < 500) return; lastNavAt = now; // SAME TAB navigation to the full-size image location.href = url; } // Capture phase is the key: we get the event before PrettyPhoto. Story
If you’re looking for a loyal sidekick, the Joey is your guy. We think this gorgeous, tricolor male could be a cross between an Australian Shepard and an English Shepard, both of which are very intelligent breeds. He would be the perfect dog for someone who works from home. Joey walks well on a leash, even though he pulls a bit, and rides well in a car. Joey gets along well with other dogs and loves to play with the dogs in his foster home. Joey would make a great hiking buddy as he is always ready for an adventure. He was picked up as a stray and is guesstimated to be between 3-5 years old. Due to his activity level, we think he is closer to 3 years old. Joey has been neutered, is to up to date on vaccinations and is microchipped. Unfortunately, Joey did test positive for heartworms. Since he is asymptomatic for heartworms, he is on the slow kill method to eliminate them, and he should test negative in a year or two. In the meantime, he can live life normally without any restrictions. Joey’s adoption donation is $450 which includes the $165 transport fee. Joey is being fostered in Arkansas. If you would like to adopt Joey, please fill out an adoption application. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. We sometimes receive a lot of interest on an animal and can't always reply to each email in a timely manner. An application does not obligate you to adopt from us, but it does show that you are serious about the adoption process. Please remember we are all volunteers. After you submit your application, please allow a few days for a volunteer to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked and a volunteer with determine if it is the best match for you and the animal. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We match up the best home for the animal, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved a volunteer with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the animal you are interested in.
