Story
Lily comes into rescue from a recent breeder release transport. She likely spent her life in a kennel so every day things are all brand new to her. Even with this unknown past, she is very brave and slowly, at her own pace, experiencing all these new things. After a couple of days, she was ready to begin exploring around the house. As she became more comfortable, her confidence grew. Once the weather got a little warmer, I started to take her outside to go potty. We are still working on potty training, but she is doing well. Outside is a big scary place with so many things that are new to her. Every day, she shows just how resilient she is, expanding her area to beyond my yard enjoying all the smells. Lily has adjusted well to a collar, harness and leash. Lily is initially shy and timid but has come to love being held, getting pets, belly rubs and ear scratches. In return, she will give kisses and loves to snuggle in your lap. Lily gets very excited when it is mealtime. She really shows her personality when I am preparing her food. It is so rewarding to see her tail wagging more. She loves to be held and be near her person. When I need to go out, Lily is kenneled. She does very well keeping her kennel clean and is quiet. In the beginning, I kenneled her at night. She would whimper a bit but settled quickly. She has now graduated to sleeping in the bed with me. Lily sleeps through the night snuggled close to me. Lily is looking for a quiet home to spend her golden years. She would probably do well with older, respectful children. Younger kids may be a bit much for her. Currently, she has not met another dog while in foster care. Her current foster home is very quiet where she gets all the attention.

Story
Simba is a small but big-hearted companion who’s ready to find his person. At around 4 to 5 years old and just 13 pounds, this Chihuahua and Rat Terrier mix is the perfect size for lap cuddles and everyday adventures. He is potty trained and does well on a leash and in the car, making him an easy addition to a home. Simba is friendly with people and enjoys the company of other small dogs, though he’s also happy as the only dog in the home as long as he gets plenty of attention and playtime. He has a playful, affectionate personality with a funny side too. Simba loves his toys, enjoys being close, and has a moderate energy level that fits well with many lifestyles. He can be a little vocal at times, especially when playing, and his sleeping habits are guaranteed to make you smile, from his silly positions to his little snores. Because of his small size, care should be taken around larger dogs during play. If you’re looking for a gentle, loving dog who will keep you entertained and always want to be by your side, Simba could be the perfect match. Simba is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 5/16/2026 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Visit our Foster to Adopt Program page to learn more. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments.

Story
McGee is a young male Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix with a big personality packed into a small, athletic body. He is friendly with all humans and gets along well with other dogs, especially when he has a chance to play and burn off energy. Cats are not a fit for him, so he is looking for a cat-free home. He is leash trained, does well in the car, and loves toys, fetch, and anything he can proudly carry back to his bed. McGee is also a certified cuddle bug who loves nothing more than sitting in his foster dad’s lap, especially while watching baseball and “following” the game right along. McGee has a playful, goofy side and enjoys collecting his treasures. He often gathers his stuffies and bones and carefully moves them into his bed, sometimes borrowing extras from other dogs in the home. He does not guard them, he simply enjoys organizing his own little collection. He thrives in a home where he can run, play, and interact with other dogs, and he especially enjoys romping with smaller playmates. This boy has bursts of high energy followed by calm, relaxed downtime. He is athletic, fast, and loves to climb and explore, so he will need supervision and boundaries around furniture surfing. He would likely excel in an active home or even an agility class, where he can put his speed, intelligence, and enthusiasm to good use. McGee is still working on potty training and has not yet learned to reliably signal when he needs to go outside. Crate training is his biggest challenge, as he prefers to be near his people. He can be vocal when excited, when people arrive, or when other dogs are barking, but he is responsive and eager to learn with guidance. He is affectionate, gentle, and full of love, with a funny, endearing personality that makes him unforgettable. McGee is happiest when he is included, engaged, and part of the action. McGee is looking for an active, patient home ready to enjoy a clever, energetic companion who will keep life entertaining, active, and full of affection. McGee is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 5/16/2026 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9am and noon. Story
Coleman is a lively pup with a big personality and bigger hops. He’s great with kids, dogs, and cats, making him a fantastic addition to an active, fun-loving household. This energetic boy loves to run, play, and be part of the action… especially when kids are involved! He’s also quite the “talker,” always ready to share his thoughts and excitement with you. Coleman is mostly potty trained and just needs a bit of consistency to finish mastering it. He would thrive in an active home with people who enjoy the outdoors and can keep up with his high energy. He’s come a long way, after a rough start in a Texas shelter where he had a broken leg and pneumonia, Coleman has fully recovered and is now healthy, strong, and ready for his fresh start. If you’re looking for a resilient, playful companion who will keep you moving and laughing, Coleman could be the one for your family! Coleman is from Texas. Story
Nicholas is a sweet, happy dog with a gorgeous brindle coat and a heart that is learning to trust again. He was found as a stray in Texas alongside two other small dogs, and it’s likely he’s spent a long time on the streets. Despite his past, Nicholas has a sweet demeanor and shows his love in his own quiet, heartfelt way. He does best with slow, patient introductions to new people due to his fears and will require a home that lets him build trust at his own pace. Once he warms up, Nicholas leans into affection, showing just how loving and loyal he can be. Nicholas would thrive in a calm, understanding home that can offer him time, patience, and plenty of gentle love. Nicholas will require a home with a secure fenced yard because of his fears and does not do well on a leash. He would also prefer to have another confident dog in the home so that he can model his behavior off of theirs. Nicholas is from Texas.

Story
Hubby is naturally shy, and loud or very busy environments—especially with noisy children—would be overwhelming for him. He’s also a little too curious about cats, so a cat-free home would be best. In a calm, patient setting, though, Hubby’s personality is already starting to peek through in the most adorable ways. As he comes out of his shell, Hubby shows off full-body wiggles, hides around corners just to peek at you, and will even army crawl over for food and treats—a sure sign that trust is building. Every small step feels like a big victory with this sweet boy. Hubby came from a crowded shelter in Texas and is still learning that the world can be kind. He needs time, warmth, and patience to truly blossom into the dog he’s meant to be. With gentle encouragement and a steady routine, his confidence will continue to grow. If you have a quiet home and a soft spot for sensitive souls, Hubby is ready to reward your patience with loyalty, wiggles, and a whole lot of love. Hubby is from Texas. Hubby is from Texas.
