Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Furby is exactly what his name suggests—happy, silly, and full of charm. He has this constant, goofy grin that makes it look like he’s always in on the joke, and his lighthearted energy is contagious. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home and fits in easily with the pack. He came from a Texas animal control, likely a stray, though he’s got the social skills of a dog who once had a home. He’s never been timid or aggressive, just an all-around sweet and playful guy. He does occasionally lift his leg to mark, but with consistency and a little structure, he’s the type of dog who has quickly settled into a routine. Furby sometimes joins the barking chorus when other dogs react to foot traffic outside, especially on the bayou trail near his foster home. But otherwise, he’s pretty easygoing. He’d love to have a canine buddy, but it’s not a requirement—he’s just as happy bonding closely with his humans. All in all, Furby is a cheerful, affectionate dog who wants to be part of a home where he can shine. With a little guidance, he’s going to be someone’s very best friend. Furby is from Texas. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. *This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Cee Cee is from Texas. CeeCee was an owner surrender, as her owner was having health problems and could no longer care for her properly. Little Miss CeeCee should have been named Little Miss LoveBug because that's pretty much all she cares about. She is a "people" dog and just wants to be with you all the time.. preferably in your lap.. while you give her belly rubs! This funny little girl will roll over for just about anyone as long as there are belly rubs involved. She gets along with everyone.. Kids, cats, other dogs - no problem for Miss CeeCee! CeeCee has slight separation anxiety. She would benefit greatly from a low key resident pup.. someone to "show her the ropes" so to say, and keep her company when you inevitably have to leave her alone for a few hours. The last thing you need to know about her is.. CeeCee is a runner.. a track star as they say. She will need to be leashed when she's not in an enclosed yard or the house, and special precautions will need to be taken when you open the front door. She's a woman of the world and loves to explore. We recommend taking her on at least one walk a day to help her overcome this wanderlust. A nice leisurely stroll where she can smell all of the intoxicating scents the world has to offer. CeeCee also loves car rides, and would love to be your Walmart run "wing-man" if you'll let her. The only mark this precious little lady has against her is the fact that she's not completely potty trained. She will go outside to use the bathroom for the most part, but does have occasional urinary accidents in the house. we honestly believe it is just due to the transition, and if she is kept on a consistent feeding/potty schedule once she gets to her new home in Minnesota, she should be completely potty trained in no time at all. If you're in the market for a new best friend.. we couldn't recommend CeeCee more! Fill out an adoption application today! She just can't wait to meet you! Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. *This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Meet HappyHogan, a 11-year-old Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix! This friendly, affectionate boy enjoys the company of humans of all ages and dogs of all sizes. HappyHogan is already potty trained, crate trained, and has basic training under his belt. With his moderate energy level, he's always up for some playtime but equally loves to cuddle up in your lap. Though independent and a bit aloof, he's a Velcro dog who will stick by your side, always ready for a snuggle. HappyHogan is great in the car and loves his toys. He only barks when he needs to go out or is ready for a meal, making him a quiet and easygoing companion. While he's an escape artist who might slip out if the door is open, he won't stray far—he just likes to explore his surroundings to ensure he's safe. Originally found as a stray in Texas, HappyHogan is now looking for a new home where he can feel secure and loved. If you're looking for a loyal, cuddly friend who will always be by your side, HappyHogan is the perfect match! Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and recommendations to keep your Senior dog in top shape. HappyHogan is from Texas. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Parvati came into a Texas shelter severely malnourished and fighting Parvo, but you’d never know it now. She’s bounced back with a whole lot of spirit and just the right touch of sass. Her will to survive is obvious in the way she plays, learns, and loves—this puppy is tough, smart, and full of personality. She’s naturally submissive and takes cues well from other dogs. She’s great with kids, other dogs, and even cats. She’s still learning not to guard her food, a habit from when meals weren’t guaranteed, but she’s improving every day as she learns that there will always be food now. Parvati is working on potty pad training and leash walking—she’s not perfect yet, but she’s picking it up quickly, especially with a harness. She barks like a normal puppy for attention or during play, and she’s eager to learn and please. This tiny pup has a big personality, and honestly, she’s earned it. She’s playful, affectionate, and a quick study. Parvati would thrive in any home that can offer her the structure, stimulation, and love every puppy deserves. Parvati is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 6/28/2025 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9AM and 12pm. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame.  Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Click here to learn more about the FTA program. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Esperanza is a gentle, mostly quiet girl who’s learning to enjoy the good life after coming from a shelter. She may be a little unsure at first, but give her just a couple of minutes and she’ll be bouncing around with joy—literally! When she gets excited, she starts bounding like a happy little deer, and it’s impossible not to smile. She gets along well with other dogs and enjoys playful moments, but she also loves being picked up and snuggled. Understandably, she is a little protective of her food so she should be fed separately from other pets. Esperanza is mostly potty trained and adjusting well to life outside the shelter. She can be vocal when she’s confined or when the other dogs are barking—she just doesn’t want to be left out of the conversation! Esperanza would do wonderfully in a calm, loving home where she can keep blossoming. If you're looking for a sweet, cuddly companion with a touch of spunk and a heart full of love, Esperanza is ready to meet you! Esperanza is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 06/28/2025 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 8:30am and noon. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Rudolph was found in a field with a mama dog and several puppies—likely dumped and left to fend for themselves. He’s come a long way, but he’s still a shy guy working on building trust. He’s skittish, especially with fast movements or being picked up, and tends to follow the lead of more confident dogs. If there’s a calm pup around, Rudolph’s more likely to come out of his shell. Once he’s comfortable, he enjoys gentle attention and pets, though he’s never pushy about it. Rudolph is quiet, crate trained, and has a cute little food dance when he sees his bowl coming. But he’s also got quirks—like occasionally peeing on bowls if they’re left out too long (he’s got a thing for marking, and his foster home is busy). He’s not much of a player, so kids should be on the older side and respectful of his space. He needs someone patient, with a calm home, who’s willing to help him keep building his confidence. Rudolph’s not the type to jump into your arms—but give him time, and he’ll quietly become part of your pack. Rudolph is from Texas.  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application.
