* To be considered for a meet/adoption, please read the full biography to see whether they may be a good fit for your home, then submit an online application at www.dpsrescue.org.* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 29th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption. Adoption fee: $700 Meet Kielbasa: The Sweetest Little Sausage Kielbasa—Basa for short—is a 2 year old, 15-pound Dachshund rescued from the shelter. He is affectionate, clever, curious, and very much your typical Dachshund: devoted to his person, guided by his nose, and always ready to investigate whatever might be happening in the backyard. A Professional Snuggler Basa’s favorite place is wherever his person happens to be—especially if there is an available lap. He is incredibly loving and enjoys curling up on the couch, cuddling while his foster watches television, and simply being included in the day. He is friendly with everyone he has met and is quickly becoming more confident and interactive as he settles into his foster home. Basa has a low-shedding coat and is wonderfully cooperative about handling. He is easy to bathe and patiently allows his foster to dress him in belly bands, diapers, and even a recovery suit after his neuter surgery. Neighborhood Watch: Dachshund Division Basa starts his day around 7 a.m. with a trip outside, followed by a leisurely morning walk. He is well behaved on leash and does not pull, bark at passing dogs, or react to people and bicycles. He prefers to take his time, investigating interesting scents and making sure every corner of the neighborhood has been properly inspected. After breakfast, Basa spends the day alternating between cuddling with his foster and wandering through the doggy door to patrol the yard. He takes his security responsibilities seriously, regularly checking for squirrels before settling on the lawn with a no-hide chew stick. Basa has a moderate energy level. He enjoys two walks each day and likes exploring outside, but he is equally happy lounging on the couch. He has not discovered the joy of toys yet, though he is beginning to enjoy chew sticks and may become more playful as he grows comfortable in his forever home. Friendly but Independent with Other Dogs Basa does well with his foster’s neighbor’s dog. He offers a friendly greeting, explores the yard, and then goes about his own business—often returning to his foster’s lap after completing his patrol. He could potentially enjoy living with another compatible small dog, though he does not need a canine playmate to be happy. Basa has not been evaluated with children, but a home with respectful older children may be a possibility. Because he has classic Dachshund hunting instincts and loves chasing squirrels, he is looking for a home without cats or other small animals. Learning the Routine Basa is doing very well with his housetraining and has made significant progress in a short time. Like many dogs adjusting to a new environment, he will benefit from frequent opportunities to go outside, positive reinforcement, and a patient adopter who will continue building on his progress. At night, Basa sleeps in an x-pen with an open crate inside. He keeps his sleeping area clean and enjoys arranging the blankets until everything is exactly to his liking. He would love to sleep in bed with his person eventually, but keeping him in his pen for now helps reinforce his potty routine. Basa can initially protest when left alone or separated from his person, but he does settle. A favorite chew helps him relax, and he should continue becoming more comfortable with alone time as he gains confidence and realizes that his people always return. Basa’s Perfect Home Basa would thrive with a loving, patient adopter who appreciates a devoted companion and is willing to continue his simple training routine. This sweet little dog has already shown how affectionate, intelligent, and eager to connect he can be. He has shown that he can be protective of his human, especially when other dogs are nearby, so he is best suited to be the only dog in the home (although he very much enjoys the company of other dogs when out and about!). Once Basa understands that he is finally home for good, he will reward his family with endless cuddles, loyal companionship, and enough Dachshund personality to fill a much larger dog.
