We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Milo is a truly Lucky Dog. He tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Meet Scooter. This charming little guy was found running as a stray in Rock Hill, SC, and ended up in the county shelter. One of our volunteers spotted him there and offered to bring him into the rescue, so now Scooter is officially a Worthy Dog. Scooter is currently being fostered by Cindy and Paul, along with their two dogs and their grandkids, who visit often. He’s been wonderful with everyone. He loves playing with the other dogs and especially enjoys his time with their grandkids and their Frenchie, Buster, who’s a young, rough-and-tumble playmate just his style. Scooter is a very friendly pup who enjoys meeting new people and welcomes attention from anyone willing to offer it. He’s affectionate with his family and loves to snuggle on the couch, happily rolling over for belly rubs whenever the mood strikes. He’s been great with housetraining and has shown no destructive tendencies when left alone. Cindy describes Scooter: “He’s confident, social, and very smart. He’s already learned several commands and picked up on our routine quickly. I trust him with free roam in our home, and he’s never been destructive. I think he would be happiest in a home with another dog. He’s playful and really seems to enjoy having company. He quickly learned how to use the doggie door and will even trot over to visit my parents, who live on our property. He’s medium-energy and very calm in the house. I do think he would do best with a yard. He has bursts of energy and will run around outside doing zoomies to get it out. He enjoys playdates; he likes to play, then nap, then play a little more. He would absolutely love another dog to play with, unless his adopter is willing to get outside and throw the ball, play with him regularly, and take him on good walks. I walk him once a day, and his leash skills are still a work in progress. He walks nicely with our daughter’s dog and has made a few new friends at our favorite park, but he can also be barky on leash and has a prey drive for squirrels, and even deer at times. At just 13 lbs, he doesn’t realize his size! He’ll whine and pull to chase, so secure gear and continued leash-manners training will be important.” This friendly social boy will make an excellent companion and family dog. Meet Marie! Marie is quite possibly the cutest, sweetest, most adorable little creature ever created. After more than 8 years in her home, Marie didn’t just arrive confused…she arrived distraught. She was surrendered to us in sorry shape: thin, with nails grown so long they curl, itchy, inflamed skin, and a coat so sparse it barely exists on her hind end and tail. And her teeth didn’t just fall out - they rotted away, leaving open holes from her gums up into her nasal cavity. This is severe dental disease that traps foot in her sinuses, causing horrific and painful infection. This doesn’t happen overnight. Marie is finally getting the medical care she so desperately needs, and making herself right at home with her foster family. She immediately got to work doing a full house inspection (very important business), had a big meal, and curled up in front of the fire in her very own Lamb Chop bed. She adores cuddling with her foster brothers and is an absolute angel for her medicated baths. She is also very comfortable voicing her opinions, commentary, and emotional thesis statements. Marie has some vision loss, but don’t let that fool you ~ she gets around just fine. She’s toothless but has a few oral–nasal fistulas, and absolutely does not let any of that slow her down. She hears well, is incredibly cuddly, and sweet as can be. And her bark? Low, raspy, and so unexpected it sounds like it’s coming from someone else entirely. Truly a jump scare every time. While Marie loves cudding, she doesn't mind staying home while her foster family is out. When they return, she meets them with a wagging tail and happy greetings. She is perfect with pee pads (10/10 potty professionalism), and has even taught her foster brother Brody an advanced maneuver: hiding behind foster mom’s back when she leans forward. A true mentor. Marie will eat anything you offer and scavenges food more efficiently than a Roomba. She prefers to keep tabs on foster mom at all times ~ following her room to room, or crying dramatically if temporarily stranded on the couch.
