Story
Meet Tobey!
Tobey is a 6-year-young boy who has been through more than any dog should have to endure, but despite his difficult past, this sweet guy is ready to put all of that behind him and find the loving forever home he deserves.
Tobey came to us from Waukegan Animal Control after being found severely matted and neglected. He is now getting the care, attention, and love he should have had all along—and he is showing everyone just how sweet he can be.
Tobey is potty trained and crate trained, and he is working on his leash manners and marking. He does well with other dogs and seems to really enjoy having canine companionship around him. In fact, having another dog in his forever home may help him feel more relaxed and comfortable.
This boy loves being around his people and has the potential to be an incredibly loving little lap dog. He enjoys going for walks, being with his humans, and rolling onto his back on anything soft and comfy. He is also VERY food motivated, which is great news because Tobey seems to be a smart guy who is eager to learn!
Tobey does have some things that his forever family will need to understand. He does not like having his head or ears touched, and adopters will need to respect this boundary. At times, he may unexpectedly howl and turn toward a person as if he might nip when his head or ears are touched. He has not bitten, but this is something his family will need to take seriously and work with patiently. For this reason, we feel Tobey would do best in a home without young children at this time.
Tobey also doesn't love being left alone, so someone who is home more often would be wonderful, although it isn't necessarily a requirement. A quieter home with people who can give him time, patience, and consistency would be ideal.
Once Tobey feels safe and understands that he is loved, we believe there is a very sweet, affectionate dog waiting to come out. He doesn't need someone to expect perfection from him—he needs someone willing to understand his past, respect his boundaries, continue working on his training, and show him what it feels like to be cared for.
And one very important part of Tobey's forever-home commitment will be regular grooming. After experiencing severe matting and neglect, keeping his coat properly maintained will be essential to his health and comfort. Regular trips to the groomer will help Tobey stay happy, healthy, comfortable, and looking as adorable as he deserves to be.
Tobey has been through enough. Now he deserves a soft bed, a loving human, some yummy treats, a few good walks, a doggy friend if possible, and most importantly, a family who will be patient with him while he learns that he is finally safe.
If you're looking for a sweet, food-motivated, goofy little guy who would love nothing more than to become your loving lap dog, Tobey may be waiting for you.
