Story
WISE is entirely volunteer-run and all of the donations made to our rescue go directly back to the animals in our care. By partnering with veterinary practices that support our work, we are able to save animals’ lives and restore them back to health. While some animals only need standard care, others require more extensive veterinary or behavioral care.Regardless of which dog you are applying for, we are looking for adopters to support our program with a minimum donation of $850. The donation may or may not be directly applied to care of the dog you're adopting but rather goes toward supporting all of the dogs in the rescue. We appreciate the understanding of our potential adopters. Please keep this in mind prior to applying.NAME: SunriseBREED: Maltese x PoodleDOB: Jul 28, 2022 (3 years 11 months)GENDER: femaleHome Recommendation: Sunrise is looking for a patient, loving family that will give her the time she needs to feel safe and build trust. She will thrive in a calm, predictable home where she can move at her own pace and continue gaining confidence. A gentle family that understands her journey and is willing to celebrate the small victories will be rewarded with an incredibly sweet, affectionate companion. Once Sunrise feels secure, she loves being close to her people and her loving personality truly shines. The family who gives Sunrise that chance will have the privilege of watching her transform into the wonderful dog we know she can be.Personality: Sunrise is a quiet, gentle soul with the sweetest personality. While she may be a little shy at first, once she feels safe and begins to trust you, she blossoms into a loving lap dog who enjoys being close to her people. One of her favorite things is carrying her toys back to her bed—it's an adorable habit that is sure to make you smile! She loves relaxing in her cozy bed and has a calm, easygoing nature. Sunrise has done wonderfully with cats, taking the time to warm up to them before becoming comfortable sharing her space. She doesn't chase or bark at them and enjoys their company. Although she hasn't had much experience with other dogs yet, her gentle temperament suggests she would do well in a home with friendly, respectful dogs and cats.KIDS: YesDOGS: YesCATS: YesTraining: Sunrise has made wonderful progress since arriving in foster care. Her crate quickly became her safe space, and while she spent much of her first few days there, she has gained confidence and now enjoys relaxing in her bed around the house. She continues to be comfortable in her crate and settles in nicely when needed. Sunrise is still learning that the outdoors can be a safe and enjoyable place. She is currently fearful of being outside and is not yet comfortable walking on a leash, so her future family will need to continue building her confidence with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Because she can become frightened and attempt to run, she must always be securely supervised outdoors, even in a fenced yard. Sunrise is also working on potty training. She currently uses pee pads very reliably and consistently goes in the same designated spot without accidents elsewhere in the house. With time, a predictable routine, and gentle encouragement, she has all the potential to continue making great progress.WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Some large-scale breeding programs occasionally have dogs and puppies they are unable to place due to medical needs, birth defects, appearance differences, or simply because there is not enough demand. WISE partners with groups working to help provide these dogs with a second chance rather than an uncertain future. We are committed to rescuing and caring for dogs of all kinds — healthy, medically fragile, senior, or those with special needs — and giving them the love, safety, and opportunity they deserve.Visit WiseAnimalRescue.org to fill out an adoption application.Adoption areas include: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.
